if we're getting all canonical Highway 61 is undeniably the best of Dylan's "electric period" peak, all killer no filler

fave VU for me is (like Tyler) probably Live 1969 tbh

blonde on blonde is my favorite dylan and the white album is my favorite beatles but i love big messy double albums

i am kinda surprised at how conventional the top 10 is

10 years ago it would not have included Nina Simone and that's about the only big difference I can detect

yea Wild is the Wind is the only one that stuck out

61 is so great. best Dylan band easily. the garage junkyard act.

the intro to "Queen Jane Approximately" is magic. also the mandolin on "Desolation Row". the sky is opening up.

Nancy & Lee might have been higher if they'd done this several years ago. Hazlewood revival seems to have somewhat subsided.

honestly I could grouse about Venus in Furs all day, even when I was a huge fan of Lou & the band I thought it was so basic. "I read a naughty book! here's some stuff I read in the naughty book."

Since they were explicitly trying to include albums with great singles, seems odd that Cosmo's Factory isn't on there/marcos otm.

At some point every Velvet album has been my favorite (including VU) except Loaded, so I don't care if the banana album isn't embraced. Every Velvet album has a horrible experiment I never listen to but wouldn't cut.

I think the fact it came out in 1970 is probably the biggest reason it's not on there. xp

lyrics aside, sonically it's the most arresting/groundbreaking cut on the first album, can't really think of any precedents in rock/pop for that kind of baroque, droning, sinister sort of sound.

Heroin's dated for sure but that's one where my vibe feels in line with most Velvets fans - it meant so much to me as a teenager, it still hits those same nostalgia spots when I hear it. I knew a bunch of live versions before I got my hands on the banana album and listening to it was such a revelation, that I-IV riff - I mean anybody who knows me knows I-IV is basically where I lived for fucking ever and the sheer power of that riff had a lot to do with it. I tend to prefer the versions everybody doesn't like though i.e. where Steve Hunter's on guitar, banana album version is a good first look but the song gets better live as it ages for at least five years

Heroin was the first VU song I ever heard, it's inclusion on The Doors movie OST is an underated milestones in the over grounding of 80s indie rock culture

Goddamn it would've been so good if The Doors OST was the #1 pitchfork album of the 1960s

European Son is basically a bo diddley riff. Venus in Furs is ... something else.
