This should be cool though. I'm kinda hoping they'll one day re-do their 90s album list though because I'm sure their modern day writers could compile a more interesting one. It's aready been redone before so may as well
― josh az (2011nostalgia), Monday, 21 August 2017 16:49 (six years ago) link
Didn't they already redo their 90's list once before?
― MarkoP, Monday, 21 August 2017 17:36 (six years ago) link
the 90s are different now though
― Οὖτις, Monday, 21 August 2017 17:44 (six years ago) link
TBH I'd be interested in new versions of the 70s and 80s lists, too. I assume they'd look quite different now. The top tracks write-ups for these two decades they did in 2015 and 2016 were nice.
― mthrn, Monday, 21 August 2017 17:55 (six years ago) link
^^ that's beautiful. xp
― Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 21 August 2017 17:56 (six years ago) link
they also need to replace all the 0tt entries that he made them take down lol
― Number None, Monday, 21 August 2017 18:00 (six years ago) link
Yeah those lists are pretty outdated (if that's the right word to use). it's crazy to think that Hounds of Love is somewhere around 95 in their 80s list
― josh az (2011nostalgia), Monday, 21 August 2017 18:03 (six years ago) link
If they did this list 10 years ago VU would probably be at #1. Now I'm going to guess either Miles, Coltrane or Live at the Apollo.
― President Keyes, Monday, 21 August 2017 18:44 (six years ago) link
no way
― Οὖτις, Monday, 21 August 2017 19:00 (six years ago) link
In a Silent Way should win. But will it?
― Frederik B, Monday, 21 August 2017 19:19 (six years ago) link
no
― ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 21 August 2017 19:21 (six years ago) link
actually idk but vu & nico seems most plausible to me
― ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 21 August 2017 19:22 (six years ago) link
Pet Sounds obviously
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 21 August 2017 19:23 (six years ago) link
gonna go out on a limb and say a black person will not take the number one spot
― Οὖτις, Monday, 21 August 2017 19:23 (six years ago) link
1. Vanilla Fudge - VANILLA FUDGE (1968)
― this iphone speaks many languages (DJP), Monday, 21 August 2017 19:29 (six years ago) link
they'll definitely want to make a "statement" of some kind so I can't see Pet Sounds being #1. In A Silent Way seems like a decent outside bet tbh
― Number None, Monday, 21 August 2017 19:32 (six years ago) link
Any reason as to why "In a Silent Way" might overtake "A Love Supreme"?
― MarkoP, Monday, 21 August 2017 19:38 (six years ago) link
they are going to make #1 the Coca Cola song and the write up will be about how Arcade Fire is still DO YOU SEE about the commodification of music
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 21 August 2017 19:39 (six years ago) link
it will be extremely bold of them to make the no. 1 album of the '60s a jingle
― ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 21 August 2017 19:39 (six years ago) link
Cultural momentum. It's definitely been having a moment in the last decade or so
― Number None, Monday, 21 August 2017 19:40 (six years ago) link
it's also easier to talk about its influence on various indie types
i for one would rather not see a love supreme top this list *rehashes entire argument from 2011 over which deej got yelled at a lot*
― ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 21 August 2017 19:41 (six years ago) link
No way a love supreme gets it
I didn't really know "in a silent way" had become so praised either tbh... when I first started on ilx I think the "rock critics know better than 80 years of jazz criticism" pick was "on the corner"
― Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 21 August 2017 19:48 (six years ago) link
Spiritual hat jazz will def have some strong placings I'm sure
― Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 21 August 2017 19:49 (six years ago) link
I don't anywhere that makes as big a deal of In A Silent Way as this board tbh
I mean it's a good record but idk if it's become universally hailed or whatever.
― Οὖτις, Monday, 21 August 2017 19:50 (six years ago) link
feel like Spiritual Hat Jazz's best stuff/most canonical stuff came out in the 70s but yeah I could see Pharaoh Sanders' "Karma" showing up. I don't really recall Pfork having a lot of love for Sun Ra or Yusef Lateef but who knows. Late-period Coltrane will def be represented.
― Οὖτις, Monday, 21 August 2017 19:52 (six years ago) link
They did a spiritual jazz feature, didn't they? Like an introductory playlist or something.
200 albums is a lot, that's twice as much as the 70s/80s/90s lists, so I'm pretty sure they'll include at least something by Sun Ra.
― mthrn, Monday, 21 August 2017 20:00 (six years ago) link
the #1 album of the 1960s will be something that can be paired with a delicious dogfish head 90 minute IPA, accompanied by a write-up explaining how the author's first time drinking that beer coincided with a time of renewed appreciation for the album, plus a pun in one of the song titles that relates to something about the brewery
― Karl Malone, Monday, 21 August 2017 20:02 (six years ago) link
i assume all of you are regular october readers like i am
xxpost They gave Sun Ra- Singles a 'Best New Reissue' back in December

Hope to see Cosmic Tones for Mental Therapy on there with Sun Ra.
― Frederik B, Monday, 21 August 2017 20:10 (six years ago) link
Song Cycle will be in there, but not nearly high enough.
― flappy bird, Monday, 21 August 2017 21:41 (six years ago) link
Song Cycle is overrated as hell.
― he doesn't need to be racist about it though. (Austin), Monday, 21 August 2017 22:40 (six years ago) link
yeah that is a p annoying record
― Οὖτις, Monday, 21 August 2017 22:42 (six years ago) link
Oh boy, a woke '60s list. Can't wait. I was actually wondering what their late-August decade list would be bc for some reason I thought they had already featured every possible option.
― billstevejim, Monday, 21 August 2017 22:43 (six years ago) link
Discover America is a much more enjoyable VDP record but I'd rather listen to The Mighty Sparrow tbh
― Number None, Monday, 21 August 2017 22:48 (six years ago) link
Aug 2019 is obviously when "Best of 2010s" albums and singles are happening.
― billstevejim, Monday, 21 August 2017 22:49 (six years ago) link
Really disgusting that they're being woke about the decade of the Equal Pay Act, the Civil Rights Act and the Stonewall Riots
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 22 August 2017 00:08 (six years ago) link
A woke list would be much more interesting than having the Beatles/stones/Dylan dominate the top 50
― josh az (2011nostalgia), Tuesday, 22 August 2017 01:16 (six years ago) link
Equally boring. A truly interesting experiment would be making Pfork writers review the 200 most popular albums 1960-69.
― grawlix (unperson), Tuesday, 22 August 2017 01:23 (six years ago) link
review dozens of beatles/stones/dylan albums?

I have a feeling that Forever Changes will win this poll. The Velvet Underground seem like the other obvious contenders but they are more likely suffer from split voting. Personally I'd like to see Scott 4 win.

I thought we did a good job making an interesting list with this: http://www.spin.com/2013/03/best-100-albums-1960s-sixties-alternative-list?amp=1
