album generally has catherine wheel adam & eve vibes i think

"can't get it out" is like they wrote another "1996" just for me

yeah this is def their eeriest album, funny how the one-off singles ("mene" and "I am a nightmare") sound like headfakes now

I appreciate how idiosyncratic the sequencing is, bookended by two extended drifters with lots of little peaks and valleys in between

agreed re: eeriest album, which, daisy was already extremely eerie

I can't begin to think what the single will be, if there is one? I guess "can't get it out" is most obvious but I'd go with an edit of "in the water"

also I can't help but think that Devil's Tower would have been a cooler and more fitting name for this record

i like thinking it's a ornette coleman reference

this is still the best band ever

"desert" is such a sick little song

i am unsure of how necessary it was to write a song from the perspective of a homophobic preacher but it sure adds to the post-apocalyptic vibe

yeah that and "451" are a nice double hit of dark western vibes

when describing this album to a friend i compared it to juno's a future lived in past tense. idk if it's that good but it's the sound of a great band stretching allllll the way out

That's a good comaprison actually - it even shares some of the same folksy DNA

lonesome/moon-era modest mouse i feel are models here down to the record's length and how it's probably a good record to drive at night to

I can attest to that it also sounds very, very good on long walks in the city.

jesse was a big modest mouse fan back when i used to follow BN

some of the guitar parts on the devil & god felt very modest mouse but this album goes further in that direction

same logic/teeth through to in the water is a fantastic run of tracks

having a hard time deciding if maybe this is my fave BN album... this vs Devil and God is a classic higher highs vs. greater consistency battle

The only thing that makes me sad about this album is that it doesn't seem like Jesse Lacey's head has become any easier a place to inhabit in the intervening years
