devotion title track rules
― Week of Wonders (Ross), Friday, 28 July 2017 21:52 (eight years ago)
Yeah, I love the title track. It works perfectly as a build up to Wildest Moments. No To Love and Still Love Me are the weakest songs, but I still wouldn't call them duds.

the only dud imo is "pieces" on TOUGH LOVE -- otherwise they all bang in one way or another

I really like this, Sade's always been an obvious comparison point but this is proper Smooth Operator wine lodge vibes.
Video is 10/10 too, clearly going for hype via ~controversy~ but I think she pulls it off.
― boxedjoy, Thursday, 31 August 2017 18:31 (eight years ago)
sounds like...... lovefool??
― adam, Thursday, 31 August 2017 19:39 (eight years ago)
It reminds me more of Miss Chatelaine by K.D. Lang.
― kitchen person, Thursday, 31 August 2017 20:06 (eight years ago)
at first blush I was reminded of Tom Waits/ Lana Del Rey, perhaps that's a litle OTT
― Week of Wonders (Ross), Friday, 1 September 2017 05:05 (eight years ago)
It reminds me of "Twist in My Sobriety" with a bossa laid on top.
― Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 1 September 2017 05:14 (eight years ago)
lol i thought lovefool too
like it tho, all her last album tended to be grower for me
― nxd, Friday, 1 September 2017 08:35 (eight years ago)
I think it's better than "Midnight".
― self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Saturday, 2 September 2017 21:16 (eight years ago)
The third album is called Glasshouse - out "very soon" according to instagram
― monotony, Tuesday, 5 September 2017 22:25 (eight years ago)
Just saw on the Popjustice forum that there is a song on the new album called The Last Of The Believers that features Paul Buchanan! That's a dream collaboration right there.

― willem, Wednesday, 13 September 2017 14:12 (eight years ago)
didn't they write together before Tough Love but nothing made the album? that's great news
― ufo, Wednesday, 13 September 2017 14:37 (eight years ago)
Just found this from 2013 where she mentions revealing her new single co-written with Paul.
http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/features/the-week-in-music-jessie-ware-is-still-pulling-all-the-strings-8970990.html
One of the results from my Google search also took me to The 1975 thread on here where someone mentioned that she was the one who introduced Matt to The Blue Nile. Good work Jessie!
― kitchen person, Wednesday, 13 September 2017 14:47 (eight years ago)
oh the song she performed then was 'True Believers' so it must be the same one
― ufo, Wednesday, 13 September 2017 15:27 (eight years ago)

imo this is her best album though it won't set this board on fire in the same way devotion did, prob bc this board is v different now and also she doesn't really occupy a connective space between dance music and quiet storm anymore. but like every track is good to excellent and rewards attention, even the sheeran track, again, which is mercifully the final song on the record and the arrangement takes it to such a cool, unexpected place that i don't mind that it's the same circular melody sheeran generates automatically/unconsciously whenever he picks up a guitar. paul buchanan track is probably exactly what a modern blue nile song would sound like; i find it crushing

I'm excited to hear the live band tracks with Chris Dave and Pino, although on 'Selfish Love' they sound tastefully anonymous.
― change display name (Jordan), Monday, 16 October 2017 17:43 (eight years ago)
Buying this on release day, and will again if there's a bonus track reissue next year. Good to hear it feels like her best yet.

Ugh, I need this album now.
― self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Monday, 16 October 2017 17:56 (eight years ago)
oh you can listen to "sam," the sheeran track, on streaming services now. you'll get what i mean
― ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 16 October 2017 18:08 (eight years ago)
God is that Sheeran track awful. A slow generic ballad with a Jessie Ware on sleeping pills. What happened to her? This has absolutely nothing to do with the Jessie Ware I knew. As if she had aged by 30 years from one day to the other. Where is the spark and sexiness gone?
― Ich bin kein Berliner (alex in mainhattan), Monday, 16 October 2017 18:49 (eight years ago)
lol ok alex
― ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 16 October 2017 18:49 (eight years ago)
i'm sure this was not your intention but to listen to a woman performing pop music and remark initially on her seeming age and the absence of spark and sexiness is... not great, imo. besides the other songs on this record (i.e. not the closer) contain what you seek
― ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 16 October 2017 18:56 (eight years ago)
Yeah I'm on board with all the pre-release tracks so far save for "Sam" which to me has the air of Sheeran writing his usual stream-of-consciousness gush over the melody to "Fields of Gold". But I've really liked the art direction generally for this era (the videos have included some serious interior design porn) and I'm confident it will be an enjoyable listen on the whole
― monotony, Monday, 16 October 2017 22:25 (eight years ago)
“sam” is great. pino palladino on bass.
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 17 October 2017 01:39 (eight years ago)
Sam is giving me Nana/She Lays Down vibes. I'm hoping the penultimate song with Paul Buchanan can act as the Paris of the album and be the closer that the album deserves.
― kitchen person, Tuesday, 17 October 2017 17:49 (eight years ago)
let me reassure you kitchen person: it is
― ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 17 October 2017 17:52 (eight years ago)

― Spottie, Thursday, 19 October 2017 18:55 (eight years ago)
when i saw her live i think everyone in the crowd was expecting someone more self-serious, but she was exactly like she is in that video.
― nomar, Thursday, 19 October 2017 18:58 (eight years ago)
Agreed on the over/under love. Much respect for backing her friend.
― the body of a spider... (scampering alpaca), Thursday, 19 October 2017 19:00 (eight years ago)
My favourite bit is, "I'm also on the soundtrack".
― kitchen person, Thursday, 19 October 2017 22:20 (eight years ago)
that's what she's like live in between songs
just a naturally funny and down to earth person
― Number None, Thursday, 19 October 2017 22:28 (eight years ago)
Yeah another echo to the "she's like that live" brigade.
Saw her on devotion tour, she's so classic - can't wait to hear the new one
