"Cherish" is an instant anti-depressant.

The only "Madonna does throwback pop in an aggressively chirpy voice" song I can stand is "True Blue"; all the others can die in a fire.
― this iphone speaks many languages (DJP), Friday, 14 July 2017 15:21 (eight years ago)
lol
'Cherish' is one of her best ever songs.

it wouldn't be a madonna thread on ilx if dan didn't express his hatred of "cherish"
― ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 14 July 2017 15:26 (eight years ago)
It's a shame "Deeper and Deeper" didn't hit #2.

Cherish. the Herb Ritts (RIP) video is a masterpiece.
― piscesx, Friday, 14 July 2017 15:36 (eight years ago)
Express Yourself. Might be my favourite single of Madge's, although it could have been edited a little tighter.
― bumbling my way toward the light or wahtever (hardcore dilettante), Friday, 14 July 2017 15:48 (eight years ago)
"Cherish" is one of my favorite songs ever. Also "underestimate" = best use of a five-syllable word in a pop song (tied with "conditionally" in "Flesh Without Blood").
― geoffreyess, Friday, 14 July 2017 15:52 (eight years ago)
I love "Express Yourself" as long as its the album version. If The Immaculate Collection has any flaw, it is the inclusion of the crappy single/remix versions of it and "Like a Prayer."
― some sad trombone Twilight Zone shit (cryptosicko), Friday, 14 July 2017 15:53 (eight years ago)
That's funny. I was about to say the single mix of Express Yourself is probably the only Madonna/Shep concoction thing I will hard stan for over its associated LP version.
― Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 14 July 2017 16:15 (eight years ago)
yeah those Immaculate Collection versions.. man what a mess.
― piscesx, Friday, 14 July 2017 16:21 (eight years ago)
The Immaculate Collection version of 'Like a Prayer' sucks - that song was made for having a huge production.
― The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Friday, 14 July 2017 16:23 (eight years ago)
Where was I reading recently about the making of the "Like a Prayer" album? It's basically the (or a) last gasp of the big budget total session pro band, with a lot of the songs cut live (that is, all the musicians together) in a room, including Madonna's vocals. I was really impressed, and came away with a new respect for Madonna, whose genius I think gets unfairly discredited a lot by the many shortcut imitators that followed in her wake.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 14 July 2017 16:31 (eight years ago)
I'm trying a) figure out instances where Madonna during her cultural apex was being discredited and b) which imitators you're talking about that I don't still listen to on a regular basis.
― Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 14 July 2017 16:34 (eight years ago)
(If you want to drag her for "Bitch, I'm Madonna" be my guest. That shit stinks.)

On the recording of LAP:
Pratt recalled that after the middle chorus was recorded, she notified the musicians of some changes in the production. "Jonathan, do less of the high-hat in the middle eight, and more of a fill towards the end. Guy, I want duck eggs [semibreves] on the end, and Chester, bring in your guitar on the second verse," she instructed.

Material Girl didn't hit #1??????? easy choice for me
― flappy bird, Friday, 14 July 2017 17:07 (eight years ago)
It's kind of ridiculous that "Material Girl" and "Express Yourself" didn't hit #1 considering how huge they were. But this was pre-Soundscan and it was pretty much Billboard's decision what made it to the top.

My UK version choice with be Borderline which I love more than I can say.
― Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Friday, 14 July 2017 17:30 (eight years ago)
Seriously, downtempo Madonna can be the best thing ever. "Live to Tell," "Take a Bow," "Inside of Me," "Rain." All fantastic.
― Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Friday, 14 July 2017 17:35 (eight years ago)
I remember how split people were over Oh Father in the big Madonna poll, but it will eternally be one of my favorites.

I think I like "Cherish" more than probably anybody on ILX simply cos it was a refreshing song to me in 3rd grade and I still like to spin it to remember that warmth.

I totally don't remember "Causing a Commotion" but I really like it! It's not really instant ear-worm but that synth bass rules.
― Neanderthal, Friday, 14 July 2017 19:25 (eight years ago)
I will stan for "Live to Tell" though its chorus is muuuuch stronger than its verse.
― Neanderthal, Friday, 14 July 2017 19:26 (eight years ago)
"Live To Tell" is all about that bridge
― this iphone speaks many languages (DJP), Friday, 14 July 2017 19:29 (eight years ago)
Causing a Commotion is great. :)
― Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Friday, 14 July 2017 19:29 (eight years ago)
xpost ahh yes the bridge is great too. it's only the verse I'm somewhat 'meh' about, but once the chorus kicks in it kinda feels connected so I don't care.
― Neanderthal, Friday, 14 July 2017 20:11 (eight years ago)
I'm surprised "Causing a Commotion" got as high as #2. I remember it being kind of a blip at the time (ditto "Who's That Girl"). Proof that Madonna could do no wrong at that time, I guess.
― some sad trombone Twilight Zone shit (cryptosicko), Friday, 14 July 2017 20:40 (eight years ago)
Cherish and I'll Remember are two of my top 3 Madonna songs

Many of those LAV tracks get their propulsion from the Chic production and playing; it's not even in a top fifteen of her best, but "Material Girl" sounds great.
