Express Yourself. Might be my favourite single of Madge's, although it could have been edited a little tighter.

"Cherish" is one of my favorite songs ever. Also "underestimate" = best use of a five-syllable word in a pop song (tied with "conditionally" in "Flesh Without Blood").

I love "Express Yourself" as long as its the album version. If The Immaculate Collection has any flaw, it is the inclusion of the crappy single/remix versions of it and "Like a Prayer."

That's funny. I was about to say the single mix of Express Yourself is probably the only Madonna/Shep concoction thing I will hard stan for over its associated LP version.

The Immaculate Collection version of 'Like a Prayer' sucks - that song was made for having a huge production.

Where was I reading recently about the making of the "Like a Prayer" album? It's basically the (or a) last gasp of the big budget total session pro band, with a lot of the songs cut live (that is, all the musicians together) in a room, including Madonna's vocals. I was really impressed, and came away with a new respect for Madonna, whose genius I think gets unfairly discredited a lot by the many shortcut imitators that followed in her wake.

I'm trying a) figure out instances where Madonna during her cultural apex was being discredited and b) which imitators you're talking about that I don't still listen to on a regular basis.

(If you want to drag her for "Bitch, I'm Madonna" be my guest. That shit stinks.)

It's kind of ridiculous that "Material Girl" and "Express Yourself" didn't hit #1 considering how huge they were. But this was pre-Soundscan and it was pretty much Billboard's decision what made it to the top.

I totally don't remember "Causing a Commotion" but I really like it! It's not really instant ear-worm but that synth bass rules.

I will stan for "Live to Tell" though its chorus is muuuuch stronger than its verse.

xpost ahh yes the bridge is great too. it's only the verse I'm somewhat 'meh' about, but once the chorus kicks in it kinda feels connected so I don't care.

I'm surprised "Causing a Commotion" got as high as #2. I remember it being kind of a blip at the time (ditto "Who's That Girl"). Proof that Madonna could do no wrong at that time, I guess.
