aww i like this!
― maura, Wednesday, 19 July 2017 15:23 (eight years ago)
i put this in the jeremih thread but nobody bit
this song he & yung berg did for justine sky might be one of the best things i've heard this year. maybe it's just cuz i've been listening to teedra moses a lot but i get that kinda vibe here, but also the textures and dueling guy/girl vocals remind me of last train to paris. and the chorus has this whimsical vocal melody that feels very characteristically jeremih to me. great song.

I like the Luke Christopher album OK; it's a little too obviously post-Drake at times (particularly in terms of his flow, which is loose enough that I think the album is appropriate for this thread) but there are a lot of interesting ideas in the music. He's on ByStorm, which is the same imprint Miguel is on.

i really hope the collapse of the pop market for anyone who isn't both a chainsmoker (or connected to one) and under 27 means that his label will stop forcing him to dabble in edm bullshit

― maura, Friday, 4 August 2017 14:03 (eight years ago)
love the title line and the production is beautiful
g-eazy unsurprisingly offers nothing but the reminder that the industry sees guest raps as little more than signposts for radio programmers. unfortunately for some reason there probably won't be a maroon 5-esque 'without rap' edit for the ac stations cuz otherwise i'd be seeking it out.
― dyl, Friday, 4 August 2017 16:52 (eight years ago)
there might be! adult r&b is a growing format
― maura, Friday, 4 August 2017 20:56 (eight years ago)
A solo version of that track was originally intended for release so hopefully we get it eventually, the random rapper addition must've happened pretty recently before they premiered it. Like I said in her thread it's smooth and I'm enjoying it a lot but I just hope she doesn't disappear again after this.

maybe i'm wrong but i feel like there's been a major uptick in adult r&b radio stars singing over trap-ish beats this year. not that trend-hopping hits are necessarily good, but if it means more room for male vocalists who don't have thin chris brown-type voices then i can't say i'm opposed.

Daniel Caesar's album is so good!
― self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Friday, 25 August 2017 17:15 (eight years ago)
Really floored by the new Elijah Blake album. Feels like a more youthful spin on Anthony Hamilton's act—same virtuosic grasp of multiple styles and eras of R&B, but with more of a '90s spirit. A bunch of tracks sprawl in some Maxwell-esque directions, too... wonderful stuff

On Under the Streetlight, Boyz II Men put their spin on classics such as "Why Do Fools Fall in Love," (Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers), "Stay" (Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs) and "I Only Have Eyes for You" (The Flamingos) along with an original composition, "Ladies Man."
The album also features three guest vocalists who join the trio: Multi-platinum R&B artist Brian McKnight on "I'll Come Running Back To You," "Tears On My Pillow," and "A Sunday Kind Of Love"; Olivier Award Winner Amber Riley (Glee, London's Dreamgirls) on "Anyone Who Knows What Love Is"; and ten-time Grammy® winners Take Six join the trio on "A Thousand Miles Away."
