re: Reggaeton / Despacito - last time reggaeton made a serious chart impact here int he UK AFAICR was in 2005 with 'Gasolina', which I always liked. I prefer the tough, driving sound of that track over the kind I hear on Despacito, which sounds like a track designed by committee to appeal to US pop audiences

I think the one I've heard the most at random places might be the C. Harris/F.Ocean but even that one doesn't seem to be that big and ubiquitous... very far from the "Get Lucky"/"Blurred Lines"/"Uptown Funk" level !

Despacito and Shape of You are the big ones over here but both have been around since January so I don't know if they can qualify as Summer jams... I've listened to them so much in parties at this point that it feels like they've been around for years.

The persistence of "Despacito" -- still #1 -- is . I wouldn't have expected a crossover reggaeton smash in 2017, especially one that's so objectively bland. I'd love to hot-take connect it to something, but I guess all I can come up with is that it's interesting we have a bilingual hit in the summer of Trump.
