this hip-hop worldview is so lame to me
deej. why did you make me watch this? it made me hate hip hop and want to die.

no hype for brockhampton / kevin abstract on ilx i guess
really young dudes originally from georgia/texasthen moved to los angeles, where theyre getting a decent following
kinda weirdish in a good way but i guess kevins a big odd future fan
theyve gotten better since their 2015 release, so heres the new stuff

are any non-kendrick rap albums this year better than "thot breaker"?
― Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Saturday, 10 June 2017 05:30 (eight years ago)
seems obviously better than yachty
carti & hnrdxx are good but not as good
uzi vert could pose a challenge, young thug also, but those arent out yet
― Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Saturday, 10 June 2017 05:31 (eight years ago)
obviously SANDAS and Trippie Redd's tapes are also ace this year but kind of rookie records.
this new trippie redd is fire btw, what's that string sample? I know i've heard it but i can't place it. Pierre bourne can do no wrong and this is a hell of a chorus lol

― Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Saturday, 10 June 2017 08:57 (eight years ago)
yeah id say thot breaker took no.1 spot from two zero one seven for me. i'd put the tee grizzley and gunnas 'drip season 2' in there also.
― hector_doepos, Saturday, 10 June 2017 09:47 (eight years ago)
yeah ive been playing that gunna tape out a lot, hear it a surprising amount in chicago. "belly of the beast" is a jam, love that bassline
― Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Saturday, 10 June 2017 09:49 (eight years ago)
a number of real bangers on that tape, but its "secure the vibe" for me. track is something elevated.
― hector_doepos, Saturday, 10 June 2017 10:15 (eight years ago)
Omg kids today still care about garbage ass GG Allin we are doomed
That YouTube was some dark affluenza shit

re soundcloud rap : that thouxanbanfauni tape earlier this year was nice.
― ANU (sisilafami), Saturday, 10 June 2017 13:09 (eight years ago)
it seems p obvious to me that xxx is gonna end up being the biggest rapper to come from this whole scene
but lol @ how he's managed to do it:

Yeah I put "nice n slow" in my column, ballgreezy's sound is refreshingly different right now
― Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Saturday, 10 June 2017 19:34 (eight years ago)
holy shit Thot Breaker is amazing... wonder if he'll cross(back)-over, after a few years out of the spotlight making music 4 the fans
― flopson, Saturday, 10 June 2017 19:37 (eight years ago)
Fwiw some of the best songs on it actually leaked out a year ago. Lol a lot of him "making music for the fans" had to do w presentation and ppl's (inaccurate imo) perceptions of him just off in left field making weirdo music or whatever
― Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Sunday, 11 June 2017 02:21 (eight years ago)
Like yes a love songs theme makes this more obviously conceptual but a lot of what's going on here musically has obvious precedent in the "nobody" tapes for ex. This stands apart just cuz it is just a well-curated collection of songs put together by his current manager. (Bang 3 was put together by FilmOn, alki david's label; finally rich by larry Jackson and young chop, bang 2 and almightyso by keef himself.)
― Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Sunday, 11 June 2017 02:26 (eight years ago)
AlmightySo, IMO, is just as good as this, maybe slightly stronger, arguably slightly less accessible. In the context of Uzi vert, playboi carti, and yachty, I think it seems much less weird now than it did in 2013
― Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Sunday, 11 June 2017 02:28 (eight years ago)
"Dats My Bae" is lovely!
― niels, Sunday, 11 June 2017 08:42 (eight years ago)
Did J.I.D. get discussed in this thread? Album is blowing my mind; right up there with Carti and Kendrick for me.

Tee Grizzly and GoldLink are the other standout records for me. The new Gunna is gorgeous. And Thot Breaker is a revelation, obviously. Would love to see that become Keef's big comeback project.
― Evan R, Sunday, 11 June 2017 16:29 (eight years ago)
i guess it's not fashionable but the yo gotti mike will tape goes hard as fuck.
― ANU (sisilafami), Sunday, 11 June 2017 17:26 (eight years ago)
though i like 'crew' something about the Goldlink doesn't really work for me
I like Smino more as a rapper in that vein but his tape was a lil disappointing.

I really like Jayaire Woods' tape. Did I post that already?

it kind of sounds like it exists in its own world right now, not overly swayed by trends
― Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 12 June 2017 01:27 (eight years ago)
JID sounds so much like Kendrick I've had trouble living with it. I keep meaning to give it another chance but I can't help but feel like he's building a career of one of Kendrick's voices
oh I forgot in my rundown to mention Valee's VTM project I listen to more than any new artist this year
― Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 12 June 2017 01:29 (eight years ago)
i put all the Valee tapes in a playlist but ya thats one of my most played for sure, he is like the personification of this thread rap music's memorable banalities lol. 'Shell' is top 5 of the year (despite coming out late last year)
― flopson, Monday, 12 June 2017 03:27 (eight years ago)
His voice is undeniably Kendrick-esque, and so is his flow sometimes, but his vision is so different that it's not a distraction after a couple listens. I hear more mischief in his sound, and more overt nods to west coast alt-rap, shit like Heiroglyphics and Funkdoobiest.

also big boi, who you may recall was once one half of the very popular rap duo Outkast, has released his first new album in five years and though it is not zeitgeisty or whatever, it has things to recommend it.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDLDVPV8kDE

― ANU (sisilafami), Friday, 16 June 2017 19:03 (eight years ago)
yeah it's not great, a couple highlights excepted (including Kill Jill and the other songs with Killer Mike)
― black covfefe in bed (voodoo chili), Friday, 16 June 2017 19:11 (eight years ago)
still digesting but I quite like Kill Jill and In the South and Follow Deez and the snoop collabothere are embarrassing moments, yes
