yeah it's great. if you like classic early 90s bay stuff you should check out IMP (Ill Mannered Playaz). Both 'back in the days' and the s/t albums are great.

always loved the "Ill Mannered" in their name - "we've got attitude! we're dangerous! okay well maybe not *that* dangerous, but our table manners are genuinely terrifying..."

i never really recognized the distinct memphis sound, and i never really even got into three six mafia that much even though i used to buy every hypnotize minds release i saw in used cd stores. maybe it's because it never had an impact beyond the midwest and the south, so there were never popularized records like houston has records that came out in the 90s and have been sampled and redone and quoted from and interpolated dozens of times in houston and way outside, and the sound was mostly gone by the 2000s. these tapes sound similar to old midwest and south album, kind of... but there are similarities, the creepy nintendo shit and cheap crispness. i'm into it.
i don't even know what this mack 187 is, really. to me it could have been made in 2005 or 2015 because i don't really have any context for it, instrumentals and chants over.... i want someone to listen to it and explain what i'm hearing here.

So this series: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TB2enM7afA
led me to search to download that World Renown track (which itself was sampled in something. the "feel the vibe" line. blanking on what sampled it). Only thing I found it on was this Dj Premier compliation: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BN2FCH0/ref=pd_mp3_als_qp_pa
There's 3 volumes of that and they're all really good. Had only heard a few of the cuts before.

these have aged so well. redman in particular is so underrated bc of the nas-centricity of the convo

Is there another mc as fun as Redman, past or present? (not rhetorical. wondering if there's someone I've missed out on).

man this is def my hip hop sweet spot and my main old-man gripe about modern stuff. there's gotta be someone coming with playful fun shit now right??
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Friday, 1 December 2017 21:18 (eight years ago)
a lot of the beatnuts stuff is missing (or missing certain tracks) on streaming bc of sample clearance issues, same as w/ de la soul
― Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 1 December 2017 23:33 (eight years ago)
as far as stuff in that redman/beatnuts vein today I really like the Chris Crack and Vic Spencer albums from this year & the year before, though they're maybe a little more vituperative (Redman) than the more brolic party rap beatnuts style

just came across this 12 inch, Musab - "Where My Mama Chill", he was one of the original Rhymesayers guy (known as Beyond) but I think it was kinda "off brand" for what they evolved into in terms of being more street than emo rap, works as Sab the Artist now and lives in Vegas I think...
