my favorite record so far is mostly emo adjacent, lovely little lonely by the maine. attn: spottie if you haven't heard it

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 30 May 2017 20:41 (nine years ago)

I feel like I should mention that Disperse record again on this thread after trying to pimp it on the metal thread...it's really something and might appeal to emo fans since there's some serious sonic crossover with the 1975. I don't really know how to explain them to people. "emo-adjacent" is definitely stretching it though lol. admittedly I haven' heard much straight-up emo this year that I've been into.

New Rainer Maria single:

Not exactly what I expected, but for a comeback single it has a nice swagger and confidence. That can only bode well for the album.

brontosaur, Thursday, 1 June 2017 17:40 (nine years ago)

the new stuff they've played live is all really good, i dig this song for sure

fo, fo, fo, fo (Spottie), Monday, 5 June 2017 17:30 (nine years ago)

whoa the smidley record rules

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Saturday, 10 June 2017 01:21 (eight years ago)

also the new manchester orchestra record seems like it's gonna rule hard

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Saturday, 10 June 2017 01:35 (eight years ago)

y'all were right about the sorority noise record

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Saturday, 10 June 2017 13:41 (eight years ago)

lmao at the way they rip off the cars on "car

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Saturday, 10 June 2017 14:32 (eight years ago)

I v much liked the last album but this one is a big step up. sits nicely with all the other recent crushing albums about death

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Saturday, 10 June 2017 14:56 (eight years ago)

i'm seeing sorority noise this next week!!

Mordy, Saturday, 10 June 2017 16:12 (eight years ago)

anyone know any of these sn openers? Forth Wanderers / The Obsessives / Shannen Moser

Mordy, Monday, 12 June 2017 00:04 (eight years ago)

Forth Wanderers are good!

sean gramophone, Monday, 12 June 2017 13:35 (eight years ago)

I hadn't figured out that Smidley is the Foxing guy...I knew there was a twinge of recognition. Neat record!

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 13:44 (eight years ago)

yeah it kinda sounds like the wackiest possible kevin devine record. it rocks

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 13:52 (eight years ago)

Incidentally I saw KD live a few weeks ago - I thought it was going to be a full band show, instead it was solo. I was a bit disappointed at first but he was great. I teared up in public like a good emo kid.

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 13:55 (eight years ago)

Also he mentioned we can expect another Bad Books record at...some point

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 14:04 (eight years ago)

yesssss

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 14:17 (eight years ago)

OH and imo the new Chastity Belt record counts as emo and it's *great*

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 15:21 (eight years ago)

lol i found that record extremely dull but chastity belt are not for me

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 15:23 (eight years ago)

I can definitely understand that, they're (purposely) not very dynamic, but they key into an emotional register that really works for me

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 15:27 (eight years ago)

http://www.spin.com/featured/best-emo-revival-albums-ranked/

list made me realize that even though i start this thread every year i don't like very many emo revival bands lol

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 23:01 (eight years ago)

mostly i think the best album on that list by a mile (hop along) is there under false pretenses

also that driver friendly's bury a dream is better than any album on there

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 23:10 (eight years ago)

missing some other obv choices some of which rated highly in our poll

Mordy, Wednesday, 14 June 2017 23:12 (eight years ago)

i would like to go on record suggesting that modern baseball record is only half good

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 23:16 (eight years ago)

wait, modern baseball broke up?

rip, they were OK

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 23:19 (eight years ago)

I prefer the previous modern baseball record tbh

there's a bunch on there I haven't heard yet!

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 15 June 2017 02:12 (eight years ago)

btw the SN show was bonkers good

Mordy, Thursday, 15 June 2017 03:05 (eight years ago)

Going through that list. Keep You is so much better than The Lack Long After, I have no idea why people prefer PBTT in screamo mode.

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 15 June 2017 14:21 (eight years ago)

and i def don't think the albatross is better than dealer, or whenever, if ever (ugh so dull) is better than harmlessness

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 15 June 2017 14:56 (eight years ago)

so it's so weird during the obsessives set they kept bringing these guys up to sing the songs but they couldn't really carry a tune and they didn't really know the songs (they kept looking at their phones to sing/read the lyrics). is this something they normally do or what

Mordy, Thursday, 15 June 2017 15:02 (eight years ago)

I didn't hate that Spin list. Maybe 1 album per band would have helped a touch, especially when it's 30. Weird to exclude Waxahatchee but not Swearin.' Feel like that first Waxahatchee record is more suitably emo.

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Thursday, 15 June 2017 16:47 (eight years ago)

Is there a rolling punk thread this year?

I Hate Sex have some screamo qualities so I guess they're ok here.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 17:15 (eight years ago)

I was just asking off-board about the "rolling punk/non-indie underground" threads, which seem to have stopped in 2015?

I want to change my display name (dan m), Tuesday, 20 June 2017 17:30 (eight years ago)

fuckit, I made one: Rolling punk/non-indie underground 2017

I want to change my display name (dan m), Tuesday, 20 June 2017 17:34 (eight years ago)

THERE'S AN I HATE SEX ALBUM?!??!?!?!?!

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 20 June 2017 17:38 (eight years ago)

Dude I can't wait to hear the whole thing.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 17:44 (eight years ago)

the Tigers Jaw record is boringly pleasant yet pleasantly boring?

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 21 June 2017 19:15 (eight years ago)

also *really* enjoying the Mystery Weekend record - full of fun little twists and turns crammed into 26 mins. I knew I recognized the singer, took me a minute to realize it was the Protest the Hero guy!

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 21 June 2017 20:11 (eight years ago)

tigers jaw are generally pleasantly boring. they almost get there every time. great musicians though

new manchester orchestra record might be my aoty? best rock band in the world right now especially since brand new are like never going to release another record

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 22 June 2017 17:29 (eight years ago)

oh also, y'all, the captain we're sinking record is AMAZING

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lts0CsKoQ4

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 22 June 2017 17:29 (eight years ago)

are either of these streaming anywhere

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 22 June 2017 17:31 (eight years ago)

manorch doesn't come out for another month, captain we're sinking stream is here https://noisey.vice.com/en_us/article/captain-were-sinking-the-king-of-no-man

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 22 June 2017 17:34 (eight years ago)

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 22 June 2017 19:13 (eight years ago)

yeah i like that song! kinda interested if it'll diverge from peripheral vision more than that

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 22 June 2017 20:14 (eight years ago)

I'm sort of obsessed with "Change Irreversible" and this sounds totally in that ballpark so I'm pleased

both manorch (love that shorthand) singles are really really nice

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 22 June 2017 20:20 (eight years ago)

I'm not sure where to put this song--I get a Weakerthans vibe from the lyrics (emo?), and they're on SideOne Dummy (pop/punk?)--so I'm putting it here. Point is, I'm loving it.
