She's leaving home is not good, neither is when I'm 64.. All the rest I would say are good but it's hard to tell how much of that is just fond memories/attachment with this particular album. Like, if I heard lovely Rita today for the first time I don't think there's a chance in the world I would be like 'thats a good song' but I can't honestly say I don't like it either.

"challops" etymology = MIND BLOWN
I had vaguely thought of a "challop" as a slovenly ne'er-do-well prone to making empty provocative statements.
Also, Pepper isn't really music after 50 years of intense dissection, I remember aged 10 being almost told to ENGAGE with its CONCEPTS.

attention vampire (MatthewK), Friday, 26 May 2017 04:01 (nine years ago)

'When I'm Sixty-Four' is definitely the closest to a not-good song for me but the bridge totally redeems it.

Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 26 May 2017 11:43 (nine years ago)

Someone upthread implied that John comes off as 2nd on this, but Lucy and Kite are the stun-tracks..

Along with "Good Morning", but hey.

Mark G, Friday, 26 May 2017 12:07 (nine years ago)

also ADitL is all about John's parts

niels, Friday, 26 May 2017 12:22 (nine years ago)

yes.

There's a tendency to apply "one or the other" to songs like "With a little help", which are closer to 50/50 than else.

Mark G, Friday, 26 May 2017 12:29 (nine years ago)

Seven or eight depending on reprise.

If you think it's less than five hmm lol ilm I guess, keep pushing that rainbow.

spud called maris (darraghmac), Friday, 26 May 2017 13:39 (nine years ago)

Lucy and peppers the best.

Good morning, within you without you, fixing a hole and she's leaving are either annoying or dull

spud called maris (darraghmac), Friday, 26 May 2017 13:42 (nine years ago)

the only song I dislike is 'when i'm 64'. The rest are all at least good, and my standard for 'good' is mostly just that I'd enjoy it if I randomly heard it on the radio while driving, so basically, 90% percent of Beatles songs are at least 'good'.

silverfish, Friday, 26 May 2017 13:50 (nine years ago)

This is the only Beatles album which, played front-to-back, makes me like the idea of the Beatles as an album act, partly because it's so stuffed with sound and nothing sounds quite like it should.

Matt DC, Friday, 26 May 2017 13:56 (nine years ago)

I'll say 8. These days I skip Within You, When I'm 64, and Mr Kit, as well as the title track and reprise. I love everything else, particularly Rita, Good Morning, and Getting Better, I feel like those are underpraised songs that have a really good kind of sparse, weird, LSD infused feel to them/

akm, Friday, 26 May 2017 14:45 (nine years ago)

"Good" seems a low bar. They're all at least good in context, and a few endure as lifelong personal favorites. When I was eight, I would have insisted that every track is BRILLIANT - with the possible exception of "Within You Without You", which baffled me.

Balðy Daudrs (contenderizer), Friday, 26 May 2017 16:25 (nine years ago)

Come on, guys, this is a good album. Overrated, sure. But, really, I don't want to skip any of these songs.

Austin, Friday, 26 May 2017 16:50 (nine years ago)

The tape shit on mr kite is so spectacular

brimstead, Friday, 26 May 2017 17:48 (nine years ago)

the good thing about this album is you can tell it's shit because the cover is also shit

i n f i n i t y (∞), Friday, 26 May 2017 17:52 (nine years ago)

oh my god, so many xxxposts but hearing the mono version of this record COMPLETELY changed my opinion of it. the old stereo mix is garbage

flappy bird, Friday, 26 May 2017 17:55 (nine years ago)

I love when the news media talks about music. This album was described as 'edgy and experimental' on Sky News this morning. "When I'm 64" wasn't mentioned by name but nonetheless...

Punnet of the Grapes (Tom D.), Thursday, 1 June 2017 09:05 (nine years ago)

I skip Leaving Home / Mr Kite / Within You every time I play this album. Home and Within are too slow and draggy, and Mr Kite is psychedelia in search of a melody.

LimbsKing, Thursday, 1 June 2017 14:36 (nine years ago)

Lets do how many good songs on Be Here Now next.

to pimp a barfly (Eazy), Thursday, 1 June 2017 15:09 (nine years ago)

Sgt P, WaLHFMF, Getting Better, Fixing, Sgt P Reprise, DitL - Good, I like
Lucy, She's Leaving, Within You, 64 - Good, but I don't particularly like
Mr. Kite - not that good, but I like it
Lovely Rita, Good Morning - not good, don't like

chap, Thursday, 1 June 2017 15:13 (nine years ago)

So 9 I guess.

chap, Thursday, 1 June 2017 15:14 (nine years ago)

o.nate correct, u nitpickers

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 1 June 2017 15:15 (nine years ago)

WYWY absolutely works in context: amid the character sketches, George's Eastern foray puts them in a grand scheme. You don't have to like it, of course.

I have no regrets b/c I'd never heard "Fixing A Hole" and now I have

sexualing healing (crüt), Thursday, 1 June 2017 15:24 (nine years ago)

When you're done with that one, check out the George Burns cover:

I forget who covered WYWY – Dionne Warwick?

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 1 June 2017 15:27 (nine years ago)

You don't have to like it, of course

Phew, what a relief.

Punnet of the Grapes (Tom D.), Thursday, 1 June 2017 15:27 (nine years ago)

I like George Burns' version tbh.

Punnet of the Grapes (Tom D.), Thursday, 1 June 2017 15:28 (nine years ago)

xxxp wait, isn't that the album we're listening to

sexualing healing (crüt), Thursday, 1 June 2017 15:28 (nine years ago)

... of Fixing A Hole, I don't think he did WYWY too.

Punnet of the Grapes (Tom D.), Thursday, 1 June 2017 15:28 (nine years ago)

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 1 June 2017 15:29 (nine years ago)

are there any good "Day in the Life" covers besides The Fall?

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 1 June 2017 15:30 (nine years ago)

Robyn Hitchcock has a good one

to pimp a barfly (Eazy), Thursday, 1 June 2017 15:40 (nine years ago)

fyi Within You Without You is the best song on the album

PJD PDJ DPJ (DJP), Thursday, 1 June 2017 15:42 (nine years ago)

thinking about the title of that song doesn't it have a strong sexual connotation?

Ich bin kein Berliner (alex in mainhattan), Thursday, 1 June 2017 16:03 (nine years ago)

My favourite part of WYWY is the snorting laugh track at the end. Must have been Lennon.

dinnerboat, Thursday, 1 June 2017 16:08 (nine years ago)

I went for 7. Never liked the title tune.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Thursday, 1 June 2017 16:54 (nine years ago)

I agree with akm upthread

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Thursday, 1 June 2017 16:56 (nine years ago)

Sgt. Pepper is such a cohesive, conceptual statement that it seems wrongheaded to regard it as a collection of individual songs — it's more of a hyperambitious suitelike pomo performance art piece disguised as a conventional pop record

the baby grew up to be a secessful kid (unregistered), Thursday, 1 June 2017 17:17 (nine years ago)

...and that performance art piece just happens to suuuuuuuuuuck, so I voted '0 good songs'. The Beatles can fuck off afaic
