Voted Keep On but then saw D:Train do a live PA and realised I should've thrown my weight behind You're the One For Me

i know kore-eda (or something), Thursday, 18 May 2017 07:43 (nine years ago)

I get "I'm In Love" and "Love Come Down" in my head ALL THE TIME. My brain is on roller skates.

Sushi and the Banchan (Spectrist), Thursday, 18 May 2017 07:45 (nine years ago)

Enough clues to deduce #1.

it's just locker room treason (Sanpaku), Thursday, 18 May 2017 07:48 (nine years ago)

"You're the One for Me" should've been higher, it created a template for so much great boogie music ie early '80s, and inspired a lot of house music too... Tho I'm partially to blame, because I gave my D-Train vote for "Music". Even though it's very obviously "You're the One for Me" part two, IMO that's where they perfected their formula.

Tuomas, Thursday, 18 May 2017 07:59 (nine years ago)

The same with Evelyn King, I voted for "Get Loose" instead of "Love Come Down", because IMO it does the same sound even better and I love her energetic performance in it. But of course I'm happy to see this one here too, it's all good.

Tuomas, Thursday, 18 May 2017 08:08 (nine years ago)

I am genuinely shocked by these results today (except for Dazz Band, which was a no-brainer). I thought for sure today would be yawn-inducingly predictable, but now I don't know WHAT to think.

Love 'Back to Life', but can't get my head around the idea that people thinks it's superior to 'Keep On Movin''.

Dan Worsley, Thursday, 18 May 2017 10:38 (nine years ago)

I suppose it's been asked before but this thread is now too long to check it all !
Is there a spotify playlist of the results ?

AlXTC from Paris, Thursday, 18 May 2017 10:44 (nine years ago)

Certainly, thanks to Moodles:

There are just so many great hooks. Plus that bridge is perfect. (xpost)

LeRooLeRoo, Thursday, 18 May 2017 10:56 (nine years ago)

Wow only #20 !

LeRooLeRoo, Thursday, 18 May 2017 10:58 (nine years ago)

I'm teaching Romeo and Juliet at the moment and the version of this in the Luhrmann film is quite a thing - the song has the presence of a revealed truth.

Chaka can't have 2 in the top 20 can she?

i know kore-eda (or something), Thursday, 18 May 2017 11:31 (nine years ago)

Does every version of "The Rain" feature that long spoken word bit at the end? Or was there an edit?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 18 May 2017 11:32 (nine years ago)

I can't believe When Doves Cry is only 20.

What lunatic would edit that bit out

i know kore-eda (or something), Thursday, 18 May 2017 11:38 (nine years ago)

i'm pretty sure the version on pop radio faded out the end

maura, Thursday, 18 May 2017 11:40 (nine years ago)

Wow, I was expecting the latest two entries to be in the top 10. Interesting to see who will make it there, besides MJ.

Tuomas, Thursday, 18 May 2017 11:42 (nine years ago)

"Never Too Much" is of course perfect in it's smoothness, even if its "quit my job to just hang with my partner 24/7" scenario is a bit odd, even in the realm of love song lyrics.

Tuomas, Thursday, 18 May 2017 11:45 (nine years ago)

Also, 'When Doves Cry' @ 20 is CRAAAAAZY. That was my number two, and I wouldn't have been nearly as surprised as I am right now if it had won outright.

A Billionaire Dinosaur Forced Me Gay (Old Lunch), Thursday, 18 May 2017 11:59 (nine years ago)

That was intended to be a 'me too' to Dan, there.

A Billionaire Dinosaur Forced Me Gay (Old Lunch), Thursday, 18 May 2017 11:59 (nine years ago)

"never too much" is the song that gets immediately stuck in my head when i fall in love

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 18 May 2017 12:10 (nine years ago)

Yes, okay. Any chance for 'Walk Right Now' to still show up? I wouldn't (and didn't) put it above 'Can You Feel It' but it's certainly somewhere within the same orbit.

A Billionaire Dinosaur Forced Me Gay (Old Lunch), Thursday, 18 May 2017 12:22 (nine years ago)

Too much to catch up on. Gtfo with this British start time!

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Thursday, 18 May 2017 12:25 (nine years ago)

The video for 'Can You Feel It' is, I feel, more terrifying than 'Thriller'. The thing feels apocalyptic, with the Jacksons as monumental demigods striding across the earth and manipulating the fabric of reality like clay. The ending, where the survivors of their rampage cower in fear as the sun is extinguished, is truly chilling.

But amazing song!

A Billionaire Dinosaur Forced Me Gay (Old Lunch), Thursday, 18 May 2017 12:26 (nine years ago)

Love come down would've been my number one if I voted

meekseeks mill (voodoo chili), Thursday, 18 May 2017 13:01 (nine years ago)

"The Rain" is the only song from today so far that doesn't really move me in any way.

Also sort of flabbergasted that "When Doves Cry" is all the way down at #20. "I Wanna Be Your Lover" was in the top 10, right?

"You're the One for Me" in the top 25 = Yesssss! I rank "Keep On" higher, but "The One" is definitely the enduring classic.

"Back To Life" was a far bigger crossover hit in the U.S. than "Keep On Movin," and I greatly prefer it.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Thursday, 18 May 2017 13:03 (nine years ago)

I can not separate "Just Be Good To Me" from its cover art. Such a stately, slow-rolling, metallic song.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Thursday, 18 May 2017 13:05 (nine years ago)

Wooooow, I figured 'Just Be Good To Me' was a lost cause at this point. Good show!

human/hutt hybrid (Old Lunch), Thursday, 18 May 2017 13:06 (nine years ago)

Have the Mary Jane Girls not shown up at all yet?!

I'm completely in the dark about what's still to come.

human/hutt hybrid (Old Lunch), Thursday, 18 May 2017 13:10 (nine years ago)

"In My House" way down. Still have fingers crossed for "Candy Man."

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Thursday, 18 May 2017 13:11 (nine years ago)

Ah, okay, guess I missed that.

There are still two songs by female solo artists who have yet to make an appearance which feel maybe too obscure to show up this late in the game but whose absence will be an absolute travesty of justice and a perversion of the cosmic order. Not to be hyperbolic or anything.

human/hutt hybrid (Old Lunch), Thursday, 18 May 2017 13:22 (nine years ago)

And they are?

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Thursday, 18 May 2017 13:37 (nine years ago)

xpost Cheryl and Jenny!

Sorry, '80s Diana Ross doesn't belong anywhere near the top 25.

human/hutt hybrid (Old Lunch), Thursday, 18 May 2017 13:41 (nine years ago)

That's just how I feel.

human/hutt hybrid (Old Lunch), Thursday, 18 May 2017 13:41 (nine years ago)

Would love to have a discussion after this is all done about where everyone is from and where/when they heard many of these songs for the first time (especially if you are old like me). I have a good friend here born and raised in the midwest who is relatively unfamiliar with, say, the Oran "Juice" Jones and Vandross tracks, but recognizes them via friends as regional hits from the east coast (where I am from). Dunno how accurate that is.
