Comparing Class Action "Weekend" to the Phreek version from 1978 beautifully illustrates the progression from high disco to postdisco electro-boogie-whatever. plus the spoken intro the Class Action version is so classic

All of Prince's ballads up to and including this were bland, but he would get much better at writing them for the next two albums. "Condition of the Heart" is great, and "Sometimes it Snows in April" is sublime, one of his 10 best songs. "Purple Rain" is so meh compared to those.

I've been roaming through the 80s Billboard R&B charts, and a lot of things that don't code as R&B to my ears are in there (Human League, New Order's "Confusion", Sting's "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free", etc.). "Borderline", however, is conspicuously missing.

I'd bet 'Human' will definitely place, prime Jam & Lewis. Think we can relax about New Order and Sting appearing.

Purple Rain is an ordinary song with an inane lyric sold by a great vocal performance. I'm still annoyed that in death it's become his signature song.

"One More Try" and "I Can't Go For That" the only two white #1s on the '80s R&B chart.

The Stansfield single I voted for is "This is the Right Time."

And both deserving of top 100 placings in this poll, imo

(It was my no.1; I couldn't vote for it and not have it no.1. I've never felt so JUDGED, though I am very glad it ended up so low.)
