i'm not pointing fingers at you all since i have no idea what anyone voted for other than me. just think this song is a much better fit than some of the others that have placed and didn't attract a bunch of complaints. admittedly my 'non-r&b-charting hi-nrg tracks by white women' was also not really about a specific track, just a snide remark i made based on some of the stacey q/madonna/george michael/freestyle ones that have shown up thus far (to clarify i think some george michael tracks are perfect fits and others aren't).

r&b stations tend to play only r&b, including the one where i've been hearing "moments in love" for years. that song has also been appearing on compilations that were otherwise entirely r&b for over 20 years now. if anything this distinction of "well actually it's synth-pop" is arbitrary considering that category isn't mutually exclusive with r&b either.

sexualing healing (crüt), Monday, 15 May 2017 18:35 (nine years ago)

"it's a love thing" is my favorite whispers song and could've easily topped my list

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 15 May 2017 18:39 (nine years ago)

perfect comedic timing, though

So perfect.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Monday, 15 May 2017 18:47 (nine years ago)

My god

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 15 May 2017 19:27 (nine years ago)

well really everything on this poll has been too low except for the two Madonna songs and the theme from Ghostbusters

PJD PDJ DPJ (DJP), Monday, 15 May 2017 19:27 (nine years ago)

last two tracks both have "it's time to jam" in them, perhaps the presence of that line in a dance track reliably correlates w/ greatness??

dyl, Monday, 15 May 2017 19:27 (nine years ago)

I introduced Imagination to be a fee KING fans I know last year #publicservice

^ I know that's the album cover, but the only single images I could find were labels.

ArchCarrier, Monday, 15 May 2017 19:29 (nine years ago)

Comparing Class Action "Weekend" to the Phreek version from 1978 beautifully illustrates the progression from high disco to postdisco electro-boogie-whatever. plus the spoken intro the Class Action version is so classic

Dogshit Critic (m coleman), Monday, 15 May 2017 19:32 (nine years ago)

Man, I love high disco.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Monday, 15 May 2017 19:33 (nine years ago)

brb gonna dance

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 15 May 2017 19:34 (nine years ago)

How was "Nasty Girl" only on 8 ballots? There must be some mistake.

LeRooLeRoo, Monday, 15 May 2017 19:39 (nine years ago)

this classic #[n/a] r&b hit

dyl, Monday, 15 May 2017 19:49 (nine years ago)

79. Prince - Purple Rain
420 points, 5 votes, 1 number one

ArchCarrier, Monday, 15 May 2017 19:52 (nine years ago)

I find it mind-boggling that anyone would vote for any Madonna song on an R&B poll aside from "Take a Bow", which was ineligible for this one.

PJD PDJ DPJ (DJP), Monday, 15 May 2017 19:55 (nine years ago)

Genuinely shocked by that placement. But not disappointed.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Monday, 15 May 2017 19:57 (nine years ago)

a gorgeous, unbelievable song

dyl, Monday, 15 May 2017 20:00 (nine years ago)

aw didn't expect to see this this high :)

dyl, Monday, 15 May 2017 20:04 (nine years ago)

Just need George Michael to appear next and we'll have the set of top 80s solo stars.

Dan Worsley, Monday, 15 May 2017 20:04 (nine years ago)

lol well we already know he's the #76 :P

dyl, Monday, 15 May 2017 20:05 (nine years ago)

A+ ... this is the kind of downtempo I'm 100 percent down with.

Genuinely shocked by that placement. But not disappointed.

Not disappointed either, "Purple Rain" is easily his worst single of the eighties. Boring, generic hair metal ballad thar goes on for too long. All of Prince's ballads up to and including this were bland, but he would get much better at writing them for the next two albums. "Condition of the Heart" is great, and "Sometimes it Snows in April" is sublime, one of his 10 best songs. "Purple Rain" is so meh compared to those.

Tuomas, Monday, 15 May 2017 20:10 (nine years ago)

Hey now. That's not what I meant at all.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Monday, 15 May 2017 20:13 (nine years ago)

And "Do Me, Baby" is the absolute opposite of bland.
