Can anyone explain PWR BTTM to me, are they supposed to be really great? I feel like Pitchfork is the only place I'd read about them.

nomar, Tuesday, 16 May 2017 04:55 (nine years ago)

the first album had some riffs but ehh

they were very popular with a certain crowd and it's an absolutely insane story, i've never seen or read about a band that went from the verge of success to being dropped and erased by everyone. the swift elimination came about because the allegations against one of the members was completely antithetical to the message and conceit of their band.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 16 May 2017 05:21 (nine years ago)

this is basically it. it's really dark:

Pitchfork is probably just relieved that this news broke out before they had a chance to publish a review of the album.

MarkoP, Tuesday, 16 May 2017 14:30 (nine years ago)

jfc pitchfork enough with the Master of None bullshit

sean gramophone, Tuesday, 16 May 2017 17:22 (nine years ago)

flappy bird, Tuesday, 16 May 2017 17:23 (nine years ago)

ugh that looks like one of those Slate branded content things about "How TV show X creates a soundtrack for NOW"

duped and used by my worst Miss U (President Keyes), Tuesday, 16 May 2017 17:34 (nine years ago)

the swift elimination came about because the allegations against one of the members was completely antithetical to the message and conceit of their band.

it didn't help that their initial response was a straight up lie, that this was the first time they heard of the rape allegations, when in reality various band members and colleagues knew of it for months and had been keeping quiet for the good of their careers.

fuck all these enabling assholes i hope they choke on their glitter

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 17 May 2017 00:03 (nine years ago)

yeah that was insane, how do you not just jump off a bridge if this happens to you

na (NA), Wednesday, 17 May 2017 21:55 (nine years ago)

i like this piece http://pitchfork.com/thepitch/1517-queer-kids-deserve-better-than-pwr-bttm

flappy bird, Wednesday, 17 May 2017 22:02 (nine years ago)

Didn't they know about the allegations against Hopkins for like three months? Sat on the story hoping it would go away. Read that somewhere, no idea if it's true. if it is though...

Handsome Bookor, Thursday, 18 May 2017 00:28 (nine years ago)

is this Singles sdtk review a fucking joke

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 16:51 (nine years ago)

lol they should've gotten Cameron Crowe to write it

flappy bird, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 17:06 (nine years ago)

just bizarre to position it as a pivotal moment/artifact of grunge culture when it was a late-arriving cash-in w shitty songs and is also an actively terrible movie

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 17:07 (nine years ago)

I remember being absolutely crushed/crestfallen by how bad those Westerberg songs were

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 17:08 (nine years ago)

Drown was and still is v good fuiud imho

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 17:09 (nine years ago)

truly a pivotal song from the Seattle grunge scene

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 17:16 (nine years ago)

lmao also true

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 17:18 (nine years ago)

lol yeah Drown is the obvious standout on the soundtrack but the movie always struck me as extremely corny and not representative of grunge or Seattle at all. it came out a full year after Nevermind, too - not surprised it was seen as a cash-in / opportunistic. I wonder when he started writing/shooting it though - had to have been before the grunge phenomenon really took off.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 17:25 (nine years ago)

well of course, movies take years to make. but that doesn't change the overall cultural context or its reception. nobody took this movie seriously, it was garbage.

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 17:27 (nine years ago)

"In a particularly great anecdote from Our Town, Truly guitarist Robert Roth recalls watching Nirvana debut 'Teen Spirit' live at Seattle’s OK Hotel while 'across the street, there was a private thing where they were filming Alice in Chains for Singles.'"

maura, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 17:29 (nine years ago)

the singles soundtrack has at least three classic tracks (im not counting "chloe dancer/crown of thorns" bc it debuted elsewhere)

maura, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 17:32 (nine years ago)

As reporting and criticism, the Singles piece is superb – and I don't care much for that album or that cultural moment.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 23 May 2017 17:32 (nine years ago)

probably more like six tbh

maura, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 17:32 (nine years ago)

xxxxp I realize that, I was just speculating about Crowe's intention in making it.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 17:32 (nine years ago)

'singles' got some decent reviews, i don't remember it being regarded as a cash-in or exploitative at the time of its release. maybe in seattle, idk. i guess when i think opportunistic cash-ins from the '90s i think 'reality bites', which was much worse as a film and as a soundtrack. nothing in 'singles' is as hilarious as Ethan Hawke screaming a PG-13 version of "Add It Up" at Winona Ryder.

nomar, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 17:33 (nine years ago)

like it wasn't Jon Bon Jovi going into his manager's office in 1993 and demanding "Make me look like Nirvana."

flappy bird, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 17:34 (nine years ago)

i have watched both in the last year and SINGLES holds up much better

maura, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 17:38 (nine years ago)

Singles at least feels written and played naturally where Reality Bites is the Trump ethos on celluloid.

Funny, I watched "Reality Bites" on election day last year...

oh so it's you I blame

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 23 May 2017 20:26 (nine years ago)

the studio sat on singles for two years, right?

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 23 May 2017 20:28 (nine years ago)

therefore imo it's not a cash-in

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 23 May 2017 20:29 (nine years ago)

reality bites is pure insane nonsense

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 23 May 2017 20:29 (nine years ago)

oh so it's you I blame

I didn't know what I was doing, I swear!

geoffreyess, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 20:30 (nine years ago)

anyway eric's writeup of the singles soundtrack is great imo, more of a grunge exegesis than a review

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 23 May 2017 20:31 (nine years ago)

"state of love and trust" is also the best pearl jam song

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 23 May 2017 20:31 (nine years ago)

I was nodding happily along with the Singles trashing until I realized I was confusing it with Reality Bites. I don't think I've ever actually seen Singles.

PJD PDJ DPJ (DJP), Tuesday, 23 May 2017 20:37 (nine years ago)

I hope we can all agree that "Dyslexic Heart" is a bad song, though

PJD PDJ DPJ (DJP), Tuesday, 23 May 2017 20:38 (nine years ago)

both Westerberg songs suck

i like both westerberg songs

I confuse those two movies, both of which I've seen, CONSTANTLY in my mind.

The Harsh Tutelage of Michael McDonald (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 23 May 2017 21:21 (nine years ago)

What were those damn Westerberg songs doing there anyway?

how's life, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 21:23 (nine years ago)

Singles has nothing so offensive as the Steve Zahn character in Reality Bites sitting around being gay and ill-used until I remembered the garage door opener gag
