Awesome new group called The Stroppies featuring members of The Stevens, Dick Diver, and Twerps. Also everything on this label is worth checking out.

Surreal, it sounds like some lost Flying Nun band from 1982.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 9 May 2017 11:45 (nine years ago)
I too feel like most of my current fave bands are from Aus/NZ, particularly Melbourne. Insane how many good bands are in that town right now.
My latest mindblow: Ocean Party. This song is SO GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yAT7ZeP7juc
― SA, Tuesday, 9 May 2017 17:07 (nine years ago)
this stroppies tape sounds great, thanks for the heads up
― tylerw, Tuesday, 9 May 2017 17:51 (nine years ago)
Yeah, digging the Stroppies. Sounds a lot like the Dick Diver from a couple years ago, which is fine with me.
― o. nate, Wednesday, 10 May 2017 00:42 (nine years ago)
Can't believe nobody likes the Ocean Party song. FINE. Here's another I am loving. It's not jangle pop - more post-punk - but it's Australian and seems close enough to list here.

i like diet. a lot
https://soundcloud.com/diettunes/sets/dietep
also mermaidens, who are putting out an album on flying nun in july; their sound is a little chunkier a la DIRT OF LUCK era helium but this single is ferocious

― maura, Wednesday, 10 May 2017 17:08 (nine years ago)
Diet remind me a little of The Smiths. Only mellower. The chiming guitars are grand cru. The singing is similar to Morrissey's but the voices are quite different.

Are there any really exciting new Aussie/Kiwi bands with female vocalists?
― beamish13, Thursday, 11 May 2017 14:43 (nine years ago)

Fazerdaze is my new fave kiwi band at the moment.
― Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 11 May 2017 18:45 (nine years ago)
Was just going to mention Fazerdaze in response to the female vocalist question. I need to listen to the record a bit more, but the first four or five times through I've found I start out loving it and lose interest by the end. Not sure if the songs get weaker or if just starts to sound too same-y. Definitely digging it in small doses though.

Wish I could have made it up to NYC for one of these gigs
Martin Phillips of iconic New Zealand band The Chills is in NYC as we speak and has two three free solo shows lined up, both matinees. The first happens TODAY (Sunday, June 4) at Pianos with Martin performing at 2:30 PM and there will also be a DJ set from Flying Nun Records founder Roger Shepherd.
UPDATE: At the Pianos show on Sunday, Martin said that he’s also performing an in-store at Greenpoint’s Record Grouch on Wednesday, June 7 at 7:30 PM.
The third event happens at Rough Trade on Saturday, June 10 where in addition to a performance, Phillipps and Shepherd will be talking with Captured Tracks founder Mike Sniper. That’s at 2 PM.

― Hunt3r, Friday, 19 January 2018 23:26 (eight years ago)
Thanks for the recommendation, bendy. That's great, innocent indiepop with some good sprechgesang.
― Ich bin kein Berliner (alex in mainhattan), Sunday, 21 January 2018 21:15 (eight years ago)
Witching Waves is another good crew that's not on the Scott list.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bP2DvdqIstsReally fond of Totally Mild, who is on the list.
― Mungolian Jerryset (bendy), Monday, 22 January 2018 17:21 (eight years ago)
Ha, well some searching reveals Witching Waves is UK, so disregard that, though they fit in style.
― Mungolian Jerryset (bendy), Monday, 22 January 2018 17:41 (eight years ago)
They sound very post-punk in a sonic youth kind of way. Some nice guitar noise and quite speedy. It does not really astonish me that they are not from the 5th continent. But i wouldn't have guessed england.

Terrible name but I'm enjoying the music of Tropical Fuck Storm, far different from the Clean-influenced peppy guitar pop of most Aussie bands

So much aussie sprechgesang out there! The particular disaffected tone they all use seems to remind me of something older that must be an ur-influence, but I can't quite place it. It's not Mark E Smith
― Dan I., Monday, 23 December 2019 23:26 (six years ago)
Jonathan Richman maybe?

― insecurity bear (sic), Monday, 23 December 2019 23:39 (six years ago)
Yep, I can see that it's all been thoroughly covered here: birth of the flattened cool: the origins of the indie voice?
I think Chuck was on the right path with his NZ Flying Nun reference
― Dan I., Monday, 23 December 2019 23:43 (six years ago)
Dole-wave bands have frequently sounded rather flying Flying Nun, yeah.
Some of the acts with the most sprech in their sprechgesang also bring to mind Pip Proud (late 60s) and the Cannanes (80s).
― Nag! Nag! Nag!, Tuesday, 24 December 2019 00:19 (six years ago)
Some punk/post-punk coming out of Australia lately
Antenna/Finnogunns Wake (Shogun of Royal Headache sings with both acts, he's got a great punk soul voice)
