enjoying Common Sense. I like the way this guy is interested in trying a lot of different styles and isn't tied down to grime/UK hiphop purism
― Shat Parp (dog latin), Friday, 12 May 2017 09:57 (nine years ago)
straight fire beginning to end, this album. top marks as an afrobeats album (or "representation of the scene" or w/e), top marks as a rap album, top marks as a pop album
― lex pretend, Friday, 12 May 2017 19:04 (nine years ago)
man how good is this album? don't think I've gone a day without listening to it since it came out.
delete clartin and the last 3 tracks, move "spirit" to the end and it's basically perfect. wish i was in london so i could hear this coming out of every car.
― oiocha, Sunday, 21 May 2017 01:50 (nine years ago)
think clartin bangs and it went off when I saw him live (which was great btw)

J Hus is a star and I like this album a lot. Still miss a bit of the spontaneous dem boy paigon-ish fun however. I wish there were a bit more 100 bpm dance friendly jams and a bit less trying to make another Blueprint.

Here's the part where I say that a famous rapper being caught with a knife is, at best, spectacularly unhelpful in the current climate in London.
Here's the part where I say that it's probably not as easy as people think to transition out of a life when you're in and out of prison, where you get stabbed five times, to one where you're hugely recognisable and where there are still a lot of people who want to fuck with you, and you aren't yet rich enough to fully isolate yourselves from them. The album is full of moments of claustrophobia and fear and the sense of living with explicit threats and there's no reason to believe that isn't from lived experience. I'm working on the assumption he wasn't actually on his way to attack anyone.
Also, I wonder how the police knew to search his vehicle?
― Matt DC, Sunday, 24 June 2018 09:33 (seven years ago)
yeah that's what I'm wondering too

it's so lush i love it. i'm glad he's still working with jae5 they have an incredible creative partnership

Good to see this song nominated for the EOY, it’s great. And yes, Jae5 deserves equal billing.

Great stuff, fantastic production, yet again (that bass! the trumpets!), and it’s not even by Jae5 - this is a TobiShyBoy joint.

features by Burna
and Koffee
― breastcrawl, Friday, 24 January 2020 09:36 (six years ago)
...and iceé tgm (?)
really enjoying this but it's a bit of a different vibe to common sense. there's less of the summery pop that made up a good portion of common sense and the beats are generally moodier and a little more low-key. really like the one with koffee and "must be" sounds even better in context of the album
https://www.instagram.com/p/B7onauZHYRF/
this implies there's probably another track going to be added to the album, with ella mai?

I'm getting super into this. anyone read the pfork review? some really iffy lines in it...
― rob, Wednesday, 29 January 2020 22:16 (six years ago)
It’s also a prime example of a review that almost exclusively focuses on the lyrics (in a very uninteresting way at that) and barely acknowledges the music* and the production* (no mention of the features either).*which are spectacularly good - reviewer, why not expand on this?
― breastcrawl, Thursday, 30 January 2020 09:07 (six years ago)
"must be" sounds even better in context of the album
Agreed, this applies to No Denying as well. There aren't as many stand out single tracks like Did You See but I think it works better as a whole than Common Sense

no posts since april - mirrors my experience, I m/l forgot about this album in the interim as well, but we're reunited baby and IT FEELS SO GOOD. for one, as love duets with Ella Mai go, I might like "One and Only" even better than "Piece Of Me". this thing is going to end up really high on my ballot.

I def listened to it over the summer a few times, but given that I apparently forgot Ella Mai was even on it, I am obvs due for a revisit!
― rob, Sunday, 3 January 2021 21:23 (five years ago)
“triumph” is prob the most traditional rap song on here but it’s the one that speaks to me the mosf

it's track 12 of 14 here.
but, per Wikipedia:
Notes: The album's tracklist was updated on 4 February 2020 to include the song "One and Only".

new music at last, album seems to be titled don't say militancy
unfortunately jae5's said he's not involved with the album at all because he wanted hus to do something with more emotional depth but hus just wanted to make a party record this time

somehow j hus produced by p2j is just underwhelming? he's just not the right sort of vocalist to really fit with this sort of afrobeats, and drake's presence is completely forgettable (also surprising that drake hasn't gotten p2j to produce for him before)
― ufo, Thursday, 8 June 2023 21:23 (two years ago)
new album (actually titled beautiful and brutal yard) is definitely his weakest - not bad but a very noticeable step down, there's a bunch of softer beats that just don't work for him, as well and far too many ridiculously terrible sex raps
― ufo, Sunday, 16 July 2023 03:56 (two years ago)
^missed all of that but I like his new one "Gold" with Asake:
