I would love to meet the basses they used for this because they are badass

How's his new book?
― djh, Tuesday, 25 April 2017 20:20 (nine years ago)
they played two songs off the new album here the other week, and they were so good I wanted the show to extend to include the rest of it

i'm only five songs into this but this is easily my favorite mountain goats record in years. the no guitars approach works remarkably well, the arrangements are so detailed and lovely
― ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 15 May 2017 14:48 (nine years ago)
shouts out to the new order coda of "shelved"
― ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 15 May 2017 15:23 (nine years ago)
It sounds so much like Hook that I wonder
― the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 15 May 2017 15:23 (nine years ago)
also: his late '70s West Coast album. I love the electric piano all over the place.
It's an incredibly warm-sounding album to my ears.
― PJD PDJ DPJ (DJP), Monday, 15 May 2017 15:24 (nine years ago)
you can hear every stick on cymbal
― the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 15 May 2017 15:27 (nine years ago)
I like it but it's too jazz, I thought the same thing about the last one but it won me around, but I'm pretty sure this one is too jazz.
^fully expect to cut and paste this for every Mountain Goats album from now on.
― Andrew Farrell, Monday, 15 May 2017 15:37 (nine years ago)
what is "too jazz"
― the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 15 May 2017 15:38 (nine years ago)
i feel like this one is pretty jazz i guess but the melodies are more accessible than the more free-falling digressions on beat the champ imo
― ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 15 May 2017 15:39 (nine years ago)
There are bits of this I just can't seem to get behind right now (the chorus of "High Unicorn Tolerance" for instance) but I'm hoping those objections fall away
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 15 May 2017 21:38 (nine years ago)
I like the woodwind arrangement and hook more than the song.
― the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 15 May 2017 21:46 (nine years ago)
"Abandoned Flesh" and "Wear Black" are my favs
― sexualing healing (crüt), Monday, 15 May 2017 21:49 (nine years ago)
I love "Abandoned Flesh" so much
― PJD PDJ DPJ (DJP), Monday, 15 May 2017 21:53 (nine years ago)
On one background listen, this sounds like a 70s smooth pop record about 80s goth rock, which is definitely interesting. Even streaming, the arrangements and recording sound really good.
― My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Monday, 15 May 2017 22:00 (nine years ago)
everything J0hn D has written in praise of Steely Dan culminates in the horn arrangement for "Paid in Cocaine."

otm
― ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 15 May 2017 23:54 (nine years ago)
I would drop "Unicorn" and couple others, but some of this is growing on me. "Abandoned Flesh" is pure ILM catnip.
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Tuesday, 16 May 2017 11:19 (nine years ago)
My wife got her vinyl copy in the mail yesterday, the packaging is gorgeous and the bonus 12" of dark ambient reworkings of tunes is certainly interesting, not to damn it with faint praise
― Guy Pidgeotto (Tom Violence), Tuesday, 16 May 2017 16:06 (nine years ago)
this is so fun. i guess the last one was too
― ciderpress, Saturday, 20 May 2017 01:46 (nine years ago)
"paid in cocaine" sounds straight off of Gaucho
― ciderpress, Saturday, 20 May 2017 01:47 (nine years ago)
I like the new single. Doesn't sound like Alan Alda at all.
― van smack, Saturday, 20 May 2017 01:49 (nine years ago)

a long, long time ago tmg played 'california song' at lee's palace in toronto. it's a deep cut; my ex's favorite. her tears were exalted. there's no way you can hope for that to happen and then have it happen.
for me, when he stepped up and over the monitors and drove 'against pollution' home (with this young band, prayers and tears...) well, it shot me in the face. i can't wait to get the new one.
― lion in winter, Monday, 22 May 2017 05:49 (nine years ago)
This is fucking awesome.
― Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 22 May 2017 08:55 (nine years ago)
Is it ridiculous to say it's John's Kaputt?
DJP - awesome vocal arrangement on the opener.
― Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 22 May 2017 08:56 (nine years ago)
ha, a friend posed this exact question to me yesterday
― gr8080, Monday, 22 May 2017 18:19 (nine years ago)
what did you answer?
― Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 22 May 2017 18:29 (nine years ago)

that could be cool! nightvale guy is a mensch
quite tempted by JD's novel reading next week too, might do that instead of the music this year. or as well. idk haha

The songs will be available on Vinyl after the last episode of the podcast:
https://www.mergerecords.com/i-only-listen-to-the-mountain-goats-ahwt
Though presumably on filesharing long before that, unless they're literally being recorded the day of the podcast?
If I consider Nightvale to be borderline unlistenablely smug, is the new podcast going to do anything for me?

I will be along this evening too, though I'll be waiting for my girlfriend to get off a train from Glasgow - anyone interested in a pint before heading in?
― Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 11 October 2017 15:28 (eight years ago)
Update: the whole 'train from Glasgow' didn't go so well, would anyone have use of two gratis tickets?
