Anyway, is this the same as "Heartbeat (Club Version)"?

Yes.

ArchCarrier, Tuesday, 18 April 2017 15:08 (nine years ago)

What does Chic's 26 mean btw?

Second-to-last track on the album Real People.

ArchCarrier, Tuesday, 18 April 2017 15:10 (nine years ago)

I know :) I'm asking about the lyric.

gospodin simmel, Tuesday, 18 April 2017 15:11 (nine years ago)

My baby's a 26 always sounded like innuendo to me.

gospodin simmel, Tuesday, 18 April 2017 15:13 (nine years ago)

Whatever we can do to get more ballots this time I'm all for.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Tuesday, 18 April 2017 15:16 (nine years ago)

Released in 1978 (and number 17 on the 70's poll), so not eligible here.

Whoops, my bad.

Gavin, Leeds, Tuesday, 18 April 2017 15:21 (nine years ago)

I've always thought I was more about '70s R&B than '80s, but already the nominees are telling me it's actually the reverse.

More accurately, I'm MOST into R&B from about 1976-1984.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Tuesday, 18 April 2017 15:23 (nine years ago)

^ just a fantastic era

human music...I like it! (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 18 April 2017 16:14 (nine years ago)

"Beat It" is not an R&B song imo

it went #1 on the r&b charts (tho yes, it scaled the pop charts first). charting at all on the r&b side is more than some other nominees, like exposé's "point of no return" (even tho freestyle is def part of the r&b realm sonically), can say.

in any case i feel like if the fit seems questionable to people voting, even if they really like the song, it won't tend to get enough votes to place. so there's probably no reason to revoke nominations except for release date.

dyl, Tuesday, 18 April 2017 16:21 (nine years ago)

not that charting history means that much anyways. mj's "human nature" also didn't chart r&b at all but today it would certainly be considered more r&b than "beat it" (and is also most likely to be played on r&b stations today).

dyl, Tuesday, 18 April 2017 16:25 (nine years ago)

anyways really excited for this, lemme throw some noms together :)

dyl, Tuesday, 18 April 2017 16:25 (nine years ago)

I'm barely keeping myself from nominating Holiday, which is probably my favorite disco ever but the world decided dance-pop isn't r'n'b at some point so whatever. Same with ABC.

gospodin simmel, Tuesday, 18 April 2017 16:29 (nine years ago)

Maybe the Holiday Rap? Best of both worlds :)

ArchCarrier, Tuesday, 18 April 2017 16:30 (nine years ago)

Gonna wait til this settles down and the spreadsheet is up and running before nominating but this is already impossible

In My House - Mary Jane Girls

Darin, Tuesday, 18 April 2017 18:57 (nine years ago)

so uh are we excluding rap titles from consideration here

like i want to nominate e.g. newcleus - jam on it

i know there's a tendency to separate r&b and rap based on their vocals but considering the two have basically coevolved thruout the latter's entire existence i feel it would be a ridiculous omission esp. since rap titles tended to percolate thru the same spaces (radio/venues/retailers etc.) commercially. the commercial format of r&b, which did include rap, is more easily pinned down than nebulous genre definitions of r&b anyhow.

dyl, Tuesday, 18 April 2017 19:28 (nine years ago)

(pretty much all of the rap songs i want to nominate were hits on the r&b charts btw)

dyl, Tuesday, 18 April 2017 19:30 (nine years ago)

This will become a significantly less interesting poll if we include rap (whereas it would become even more interesting if we include dance pop but that's just me).

Stevie Wonder - All I Do

Ednah Holt - Serious, Sirius Space Party

Ari (whenuweremine), Tuesday, 18 April 2017 19:33 (nine years ago)

Well, "Rapper's Delight" made the '70s poll so ... ?

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Tuesday, 18 April 2017 19:34 (nine years ago)

"Jam On It" reads as much electro R&B as it does rap, tho.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Tuesday, 18 April 2017 19:35 (nine years ago)

Native New Yorker is from 1977.

gospodin simmel, Tuesday, 18 April 2017 19:36 (nine years ago)

"jam on it" deserves to be nominated yes absolutely

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 18 April 2017 19:40 (nine years ago)

"Jam On It" reads as much electro R&B as it does rap, tho.

this is what i mean by nebulous genre definitions (even tho i agree w/ the statement!). like where is the line drawn between electro r&b w/ largely rapped vocals (or no vocals) and actual rap? is it whodini's "friends"? j.j. fad's "supersonic"?

dyl, Tuesday, 18 April 2017 19:55 (nine years ago)

I'm the wrong one to ask, I think dance music is always at a disadvantage on ILM and if I can stack the deck in boogie's favor somehow, I'm likely to do it.

I listed "Mama Used to Say" upthread: a huge hit in England, #2 on te black chart, but like so many R&B hits of the era a dud on the pop chart.

Here's where I recommend The Blerb Radio Podcast, in which Thomas Inskeep and Michael Heyliger discuss every #1 and #2 of the eighties R&B chart.
