"It's a Shame" was just one of a ridiculous number of Spinners tracks I voted for, so I really hope there is more to come.

Yay for Manu Dibango!

I was the other voter for Reasons, had it in my top ten--spectacular guitar and fierce vocal creating that euphoria

― human music...I like it! (voodoo chili), Wednesday, April 12, 2017 5:18 PM (two hours ago)

Excellent work. It's one of my favourite album openers ever.

Great to see Machine Gun make it. I had another Commodores song really high on my list but I'm almost certain nobody else will have voted for it.

Love I Need Somebody to Love Tonight by Sylvester. That and Don't Stop are his two best songs for me.

I was just listening to Sweet Thing. They're such an underrated group. I voted for that and Tell Me Something Good.

You Ought to Be With Me is my favourite Al Green song.

Lots of other songs I'm happy to see here too.. and James Brown.

I was the #1 voter for "You Make Me Feel Brand New". Airrion Love sets it up, Thompkins, Jr. knocks it out the park.

Jogging back even further, how have I never heard MJ's "I Wanna Be Where You Are" before? Were those late 1971 recordings his secret peak? There's this, "Got To Be There" and his masterly version of "Ain't No Sunshine" just for starters.

Ha, was I really the only #1 vote for "The Payback"? I guess I have no real concept of what is canonical here.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Wednesday, 12 April 2017 20:15 (seven years ago) link

I didn't vote because I hate these kind of open-ended genre polls in general but um yeah, how is that song not in the top 10, it's like the apex of JB singles.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 12 April 2017 20:17 (seven years ago) link

The randomness is such that even when there's only 5 slots left, I have no idea how to predict them.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Wednesday, 12 April 2017 20:18 (seven years ago) link

, it's like the apex of JB singles

I felt that way about Super Bad, yet it finished at 199.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 12 April 2017 20:28 (seven years ago) link

The World Is A Ghetto is amazing. I voted for two other War songs that were also title tracks to their albums.

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 12 April 2017 20:39 (seven years ago) link

Super Bad is great but it's "washing machine" rhythm is so unusual and distinct from the general blueprint of so much 70s soul/funk/disco, to me it's off in its own JB-centric galaxy. Whereas The Payback is a straight-up 4/4 funk monster that epitomizes a lot about the era.

The As/Another Star diptych at the end of Songs is the thrilling climax to Stevie's unimpeachable 70s run. It's where his singing, composing, and arranging skills combine with his deep love of God, music, and human beings to create 16 of the greatest minutes in music history.

It's impossible for me to separate them or vote for them anywhere outside the top five of a poll like this
