This video is great, but I can't imagine ever listening to the song.

song is great. classic bay mobb beat >>>>

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Friday, 31 March 2017 07:41 (nine years ago)

I like it. Obviously I would love another album of live band jazz weirdness, but this reminds me he sounds great over a str8-up banger. And it's only three minutes! Really succeeds at hyping me up for the new album.

Kendrick is in at least three of this decade's ten best music videos.

nashwan, Friday, 31 March 2017 11:29 (nine years ago)

he cares way more about drake than he should, and manage to make tracks caring about drake sounds really really good.

"The Heart Pt. 4" was definitely aimed (at least partly) at Drake, but I think this song is aimed more at Kendrick's competition as a whole. Though Drake will probably take it as a singularly personal affront...

The line "Watch my soul speak, you let the meds talk" could be directed at a number of rappers (Future?), but not Drake. Anyways, this video's been on repeat for me; favorite thing he's done since GKMC.

was excluding groups like NWA, Wu-Tang, Goodie Mob because I guess I feel like they are groups not crews

(even tho marley did the juice crew all stars album but i don't feel like that counts, the Juice Crew were perceived as solo artists first and foremost)

Idk about this like but some of this is directed at big Sean. He even parodied one of his videos w the weird camera effects at the end

What's his beef with Big Sean? He seems like a guy who can be safely ignored (by Kendrick, but also by me)

neva missa lost, wednesday nights on abc (voodoo chili), Friday, 31 March 2017 16:02 (nine years ago)

I like the song, wonder if it's a little bit of a headfake in the vein of "i" -- leading with a straightforward track and following with a more complex album.

Yeah, deej is right. Kendrick doesn't really do club songs but when thevibe is right, Allright will tear down any venue. This tries to do something with that same energy. I haven't heard it out yet but I predict it could be huge.

That's a really, really bad sign for this record.

was telling my wife the other night that career-wise, I think Kendrick Lamar needs a huge hit with his next record. Guessing the U2 collab is efforts towards that. Somehow.

Dominique, Friday, 7 April 2017 14:35 (nine years ago)

I would have guessed the G. Kurstin credit on track ten would be his effort towards a huge hit.

Yeah, while the previous two (three if you count Untitled Unmastered) were big hits with hip-hop heads, critics and music obsessives, this has been the first album where I've started to notice people getting into Kendrick Lamar who perhaps would have found some of his previous work hard going.

and yes Section.80 came out on CD before GKMC was out. i saw a bootleg vinyl copy, too, i'm pretty sure.

alpine static, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 01:10 (eight years ago)

i mean if he really wrote this thing to go both directions, this is a *much* cooler reason to buy another copy than the "reloaded" reissue w/ 2 extra trax just in time for Xmas or w/e

alpine static, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 01:11 (eight years ago)

you guys, the obvious difference is the advent of streaming ... hip hop in general is literally bigger (because hip hop's foot print is bigger) but its true size is also being more accurately measured ... this is true across the genre

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 04:25 (eight years ago)

"i think it's a cool stunt. i'd buy physical if i could."

you can, go to a store and buy it. will you? i won't. I already bought the normal album. again, what's the point other than a rerelease?

akm, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 13:17 (eight years ago)

Yes, Hip-Hop is more accurately measured now, but it still feels like Kendrick raised his status this year. His number way outsold and outstreamed More Life, which nobody would've predicted before the year

Cat Person (Putting Out Fire) (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 13:24 (eight years ago)

re: the "reversed" version, it would have been cool if they'd mixed up the transitions to make it run a little smoother.

Simon H., Wednesday, 13 December 2017 13:28 (eight years ago)

damn. is really the proper follow-up to TPAB and the release of “humble” was way more of an event in the immediate than either of the two singles that preceded TPAB. (it also only preceded its associated album by two weeks, so momentum was huge)

maura, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 13:33 (eight years ago)

xp interesting article

not sure if this is because "its true size is being more accurately measured" or because it's growing in size?

that is, if streaming is driving "sales" and young people stream more than old people and young people prefer contemporary genres (not rock) then this would make hip hop bigger, wouldn't make it retroactively bigger tho (unless the argument is that urban genres were always bigger but didn't have sales to match because they were either radio or DJ genres or in some other way their popularity was not sales drive)

niels, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 13:36 (eight years ago)

our local station plays the radio version of Element and Loyalty a lot in addition to Humble

this is a chicken & the egg kind of argument. There was very popular rap music that was largely ignored by industry gatekeepers until streaming allowed them to measure it, and once they did measure it & have something verifiable to base decisions on, they proceeded to magnify its popularity further
