yeah exactly - i don't care how he votes - saying right-wing things is an act in itself, whatever his private feelings are don't concern me in this context.

The Kele thing..
The impression I got was that it was John's protectors who did the deed, and were (alleg) racist, etc. So, it's not that John is racist, but his 'security' might be.
Now, let's think about the Donald. Hmmmmm....

"My attitude was these people did so much to make the world a more interesting place, that I don’t care if they go on every five years for the money: they deserve it. They can’t be repaid for what they did – that’s how I feel about it...If they’d all become bankers, or arms merchants or mercenaries in Iraq or something like that – those records would still be there and they would still be things in themselves. And the creators could not hurt them."
this is a weird claim for Marcus to make, given his insistence, elsewhere, on the important of context. an artist's later work and actions enrich/further/complicate the context of their earlier work, at the very least. if that work has, in the past, been political in nature/focus, then an artist's expressed political opinions might also further illuminate/complicate the earlier work. earlier work doesn't exist in some weird bubble where nothing that comes later can touch it; even the experience of being moved by that earlier work can be complicated in severe instance (where the artist later goes on to commit murder, say).

People do seem to try and bend over backwards to try and defend Lydon over shit like this because of what he might once have represented, vocal support for Trump suggests he doesn't exactly have the best interests of black people at heart but who really gives a shit what a pop star from 30 years ago thinks about politics anyway?
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 28 March 2017 15:35 (seven years ago) link
mmm, inclined to go back to what lg said about 'private feelings' here - if you're knowingly surrounding yourself with racists who end up getting into a racially-motivated fracas then you're just as much at fault imo

well, yeah. lydon was always a troll but now that is basically undistinguishable from alt-right. it's a generational thing somewhat. godard tripped on it as well.

It would be no biggie, Enoch's reputation has been completely rehabilitated since they found out he "wasn't totally impartial to" a bit of Dixieland Swing, occasionally.

xp. i can't find it anywhere online but i vividly remember watching john lydon on the tv as part of the 100 greatest britons programme advocating for enoch powell, talking about the cruelty of mass immigration on the native white, working class communities, and how powell was prescient with his river's of blood speech.

Lydon channeling Brendan O'Neill
Brexit is actually the most rock’n’roll thing to have happened in a generation. What we have here is ordinary people, including vast swathes of the working class, saying ‘No’ to the status quo, sticking two fingers up at an aloof elite, channelling Rotten and Vicious to say screw you (or something rather tastier) to that illiberal, risk-averse layer of bureaucracy in Brussels. It makes the student radicals of the 60s and even the anarchic punks of the 70s look like rank amateurs in comparison. Sure, those guys might have waved flowers against the Vietnam War or put safety pins through their snouts, but did they send the political class, the chattering class and the business elite into an existential tailspin by delivering a severe sucker punch to these people’s favourite institution? No, they didn’t. Brexit did, though.

Interesting that he'd mix things up with an indie singer-songwriter.:P Also, if that means he picked four operas by Wagner, I'm pretty sure that's cheating.

the Psalms, Job, Jonah and the Song of Solomon are among the greatest literature ever produced imo. of them I've only translated a phrase or two from Psalms & SOS (and the little Hebrew I studied for a year in college has long since atrophied) but iirc the word is the OT in Hebrew has quite stunning literary merit

Job needs more car chases and people being kicked in the face IMO, but I guess that'll have to wait for the movie version. Jason Statham is...JOB.

Yeah, John’s talking tour gets pulled in Glasgow because his tour manager was aggressive with staff.
No news story has named the tour manager, but.
I’d not bother with this, but some comments allude to a high possibility that the Glasgow venue has ‘form’ for being .. dunno.
I mean, what would a tour like this need, beyond a chair, table and a mic?
― Mark G, Tuesday, 26 October 2021 09:51 (two years ago) link
It's probably John "Rambo" Stevens, his long time manager/henchman
