i guess i'm just not bored by it all, yet

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 03:34 (nineteen years ago)

man i think the villalobos mix from green and blue is fantastic: it sounds so effortless and light and happy and house-y. the awakenings mix is something else altogether though. wow. anyone know what the last track is? shame it cuts off the way it does.

breakfast pants (disco stu), Sunday, 30 July 2006 03:07 (nineteen years ago)

I want to ask:
-- Does anyone else like (or even kind of like) these 'weird noises' in other types of music?
-- What the fuck is so wrong with weird noises?

trees (treesessplode), Sunday, 30 July 2006 03:13 (nineteen years ago)

it doesn't sound too much like villalobos, but if it's the imminent 44 min track, i am excited!!! it's like the ultimate coalesced spiralling microedited dubbed-out afro-techno version of his "see mi yah" remix.

xpost

breakfast pants (disco stu), Sunday, 30 July 2006 03:21 (nineteen years ago)

dudes it's also got like mariachi funeral music in it or something. fuuuuccccccckkkk.

breakfast pants (disco stu), Sunday, 30 July 2006 03:23 (nineteen years ago)

the "weird noises" criticism used to bother me, but now i think it's one of the most honest things someone can say about music. it's kind of revealing in its simplicity, but i guess that's obvious.

anyway, all music = weird noises at some point.

breakfast pants (disco stu), Sunday, 30 July 2006 03:27 (nineteen years ago)

(I think that Villalobos is 'experimental' in many different ways, but one of the most striking ways is the way in which some of his tracks remind me of 'experimental' music, serial music, repetition pieces. Of course, dance music is based on repetitions, but Villalobos is [in my mind] much more of a companion to the minimal composers of the past than to many of his contemporaries)

(In other words, weird noises do not usually make a good dance party. But V's stuff isn't just 'weird noises.' It can make your hips move.)

Honest, sure. The question is whether it's a value judgment or not-- for some people it is, and more often than not, that judgment is in the negative. Understandable? Ya, sure. But I also think that a negative view towards what are here called 'weird sounds' is a bit close-minded.

trees (treesessplode), Sunday, 30 July 2006 03:37 (nineteen years ago)

right. it's also not even remotely interesting. if you can't check your inhibitions at the door, then too bad for you, but it ain't gonna ruin my party.

breakfast pants (disco stu), Sunday, 30 July 2006 03:54 (nineteen years ago)

track id please: the big, syncopated banger that comes in around 35:40 in villalobos' live at awakenings set (downloadable from ump3.de...tobias thomas played it last night as well; i SHOULD know it but fuck if i can put my finger on it. thanks!

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Sunday, 30 July 2006 14:58 (nineteen years ago)

its Ananda's Doppelwhipper. tracklisting for Awakenings posted above, yo.

a (rslvd), Sunday, 30 July 2006 15:21 (nineteen years ago)

doh. knew i'd seen a tracklist somewhere, should've scrolled up. thx! :)

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Sunday, 30 July 2006 15:24 (nineteen years ago)

but the tracks are just "weird noises" there is no substance to it.

its just a rhythmic mess of boings and zhings and whams.. with a dull l thud under it..

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Monday, 31 July 2006 02:05 (nineteen years ago)

sounds like minimal house music!

Savin, I take issue with 'rhythmic mess' and 'no substance to it.' Unless, of course, you meant 'polyrhythmic structure' by 'rhythmic mess,' and 'great substance to it' rather than 'no substance to it.'
The whings and boings and thuds? You're right about them.

Also: lf, I am rather shocked by your agreement. No substance to minimal house music? Uh...

trees (treesessplode), Monday, 31 July 2006 03:24 (nineteen years ago)

i meant to point out that maybe he was listening to the wrong musics if he didn't like whings and boings and thuds all in rhythm

you know i like minimal like i like xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Monday, 31 July 2006 05:12 (nineteen years ago)

See, I realized after I posted that this was probably what you meant. At times, my ability to pick up the tone of type is impaired.

Did you get those tracks I sent you, by the way?

trees (treesessplode), Monday, 31 July 2006 16:23 (nineteen years ago)

Does anyone know when this CD coming out? [excitement tempered with doubt]

gekoppel (Gekoppel), Monday, 31 July 2006 22:21 (nineteen years ago)

It took a couple of listens to break through the much more 4/4 trackiness of "Salvador" but... it's still pretty damn great as 'listening' music (as they say) isn't it?

fandango (fandango), Friday, 4 August 2006 21:51 (nineteen years ago)

ja, fandango. definitely a pleasure to listen to.

trees (treesessplode), Saturday, 5 August 2006 17:56 (nineteen years ago)

agreed

that song is so good that i keep feeling like i need to rationalize it and contextualize it but i just can't no matter how hard i try and it's especially hard to do when you are dancing around your room and muttering the lyrics over and over again

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Sunday, 6 August 2006 06:44 (nineteen years ago)

it's a song about bass drum tweaks. love it!

Good Dog (Good Dog), Sunday, 6 August 2006 11:20 (nineteen years ago)

so, first frisbee tracks and now playhouse and perlon are reissuing their villalobos singles: http://www.forcedexposure.com/artists/villalobos.ricardo.html

salvador - logohitz / lugom-ix
frank mueller melodram / 2000 abdominals
bredow / damm3
the contempt
ibiza 99
luna - zu fruh (iron lung mix) / luna (re-edit)

if i really really like 808 the bassqueen and lazer@present, what should i get?

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Sunday, 6 August 2006 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

i haven't heard any of those except for frank mueller melodram mixed on superlongevity 2

that song is so good that i keep feeling like i need to rationalize it and contextualize it but i just can't

Perhaps one of the many secrets of a good track?

trees (treesessplode), Monday, 7 August 2006 14:21 (nineteen years ago)

it's like staring into myself and everyone else all at once!

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Monday, 7 August 2006 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

means nothing

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Monday, 7 August 2006 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

download the MDMA/Bosch 12" (as Richard Wolfsdorf). totally banging, one of his best. no chance of owning a copy right now unless you feel like shelling out 70 euros on ebay.

a (rslvd), Monday, 7 August 2006 14:25 (nineteen years ago)

means nothing

what?

trees (treesessplode), Monday, 7 August 2006 14:39 (nineteen years ago)

i meant that my previous statement was meaningless garbage

and thanks a lot for the tip on the wolfsdorf record! i'd always seen that listed as one of his pseudonyms but for some reason i never bothered to investigate. i'm eagerly watching it download. in the context of 1996 villalobos, a track called MDMA has so much potential.

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 01:40 (nineteen years ago)

omg this shit is all on ebay.de (well, not mdma/bosch)

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 01:54 (nineteen years ago)

sorry, 50 euros

a (rslvd), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 08:30 (nineteen years ago)

ebay = source of most extreme pain as well as joy, in consumptive terms

trees (treesessplode), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

going through recent downloads, and found ricardo's 26 minute 'dance department'... when/where's this from?

jermaine (jnoble), Saturday, 19 August 2006 12:31 (nineteen years ago)

If you would've googled it, you'd see it is a live set from 1-4-06.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Saturday, 19 August 2006 17:10 (nineteen years ago)

three weeks pass...
Fabric last night, what the fuck... INSANE new Villalobos re-mix/re-edit/mash-up. really familiar extended old school rapping (sounds like Grandmaster Flash vintage), Depeche-ish chorus (which I KNOW I've heard before, maybe it's from a more current minimal hit?), little kids talking smack, a Cocteauish chanting breakdown towards the end of the track (before slamming back into the chorus). he played it twice, once near the beginning, not the whole way through, then again at the very end -- all 15+ minutes of it then. jesus.

wild stab in the dark, but if anyone else was there, any idea what the original tracks he's used are? i was somewhat the worse for wear so couldn't manage to remember any of the lyrics (apart from one of the kid exchanges being "I win!" "I know!").

a (rslvd), Monday, 11 September 2006 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

last night meaning Saturday, ugh

a (rslvd), Monday, 11 September 2006 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, I am listening to this right now:
http://www.stagepass.com/images/item_gif/50481065.gif

and those sirens are there. The connections between Villalobos and the ultramodernists and minimalists of the 20th century keep growing in my brain.

trees (treesessplode), Thursday, 14 September 2006 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

That was also a Zappa favorite. No further relation I'm afraid.

blunt (blunt), Thursday, 14 September 2006 15:55 (nineteen years ago)

ionisation always reminded me more of photek

the art ensemble of chicago house (vahid), Thursday, 14 September 2006 17:12 (nineteen years ago)

Results 1 - 10 of about 107 for "vahid" "photek". (0.36 seconds)

struttin' with some barbecue (jimnaseum), Thursday, 14 September 2006 17:16 (nineteen years ago)

I mean, yes. It's more that the strategy is the same: sirens that are sometimes in and sometimes out of phase with the beat, changing dynamically and registrally at key moments. Uh, yeah.

trees (treesessplode), Thursday, 14 September 2006 17:28 (nineteen years ago)

do you think varese intended those effects?

the art ensemble of chicago house (vahid), Thursday, 14 September 2006 17:48 (nineteen years ago)

i wonder if its not anachronism to assign villalobos strategies to varese ... stockhausen probably did, i guess
