this album is way more Pearl Jam than emo imo, but who cares

but we looked cooler and the music sounded way better

Anyone who thinks Diary is better should listen to 'Disappear'. Or 'Snibe'.
Or their very best song, which they put in the final spot on their final release:

this isn't *really* emo (though the vocals help) but I couldn't not vote for it, my #4 and an all-time favorite

God, that review.
I mainly felt OK voting for it cause I had a lot of extremely emo times listening to it

love that hum record to death. wanted to vote for it but so many other albums just felt more right to me.

might have been my #4 too

189 points and four votes mean the other two votes must have been really fuckin high too (assuming 50 for a no. 1?)

SDRE and Hum back to back <3
I felt too much out of my depth to vote in this poll, had no idea which way the emo pendulum would swing. Turns out it's surprisingly going into very different directions. Which is good. Should have voted. Rising Tide is the one for me, as great as Diary is.

I will forever maintain that this album would not be the commercial disaster it was had they released "Green to Me" or "If You Are to Bloom" as the lead single ("Comin' Home" was a *terrible* choice)
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 18:56 (seven years ago) link
if nothing else they both had sweet earwormy opening riffs

Liking Hum so far, should have gotten round to them years ago. Think they were definitely an influence on Oceansize, and I now realise Lantlos' last album was basically a heavier version of this

Have never been able to get into Rising Tide as much as the other SDRE albums but I'll keep trying.
Re: Pitchfork's old emo reviews, nothing beats all the Joan of Arc ones, I've never known a publication hate a band so much.

i only voted for one get up kids record but even that felt weird bc i feel like all of their best songs are on unrelated eps

Ha! Regardless of what else places I'm voting Tell All Your Friends.

I ended up not voting for any Get Up Kids. I listened to bits of a couple records and they didn't hit me like I thought they were going to. And yet I really like "I'm a Loner, Dottie, a Rebel..." which reminds me I forgot to vote for the Post Marked Stamps comp CD.
I saw the Hold Steady open for the Get Up Kids years ago. Weird bill. The emo kids were not into THS. Six months later I saw THS again in a small venue and mentioned the show to Craig outside the club. His response: "Well, when you fuck with emo, emo fucks with you."

if i ever write that book about emo (lol) four minute mile will be extremely central to its thesis bc it's, as far as i know, the first record of its kind to be so simultaneously recognizably emo and recognizably pop-punk, plus it inspired almost every band that came after
