the lines were always gonna be blurry. i think it's cool these records are placing they just dont fit in the buckets i personally made for this poll. it would be more disheartening if the records were bad.

saves the day i think with through being cool and stay what you are determined what emo would sound like for the following ten years or so

say anything came around later and at least on is a real boy their songs tend to shift from idea to idea with a theatricality that's like...idk, emo queen

One interesting takeaway from this poll already is it refutes the popular narrative that fans of second gen/'90s emo despise the third wave, mall-punky stuff. Obviously it's a modest sample size here but we haven't seen any of that in this thread, the enthusiasm carries across the sub-genres with tons of overlap

I don't know whether the division was ever as deep as it was portrayed. But it often didn't make sense. Like, Taking Back Sunday isn't that radical of a leap from Rites of Spring. In fact they're probably less of one than Sunny Day Real Estate or Death Cab For Cutie or whatever

i once characterized the opening of jimmy eat world's "goodbye sky harbor" as post-hardcore and someone got mad at me bc post-hardcore according to him always involved screaming and being intro, but come on, that shit sounds like a gentler drive like jehu

feeling v alone in one's heartfelt assertions = emo in a nutshell!

all of the attempts to do this so far are incredible failures, not i think bc of the talent involved but bc of the genre's slipperiness. idk if i could do any better

Well, that's interesting, because my ballot was mostly split between screamy post-hardcore and 00s commercial stadium rock, but I never got into most of the wimpy indie rock in between. xp to Evan

ive listened to "through being cool" about 8,000 times, "cant slow down" about 18 times and all other STD albums zero times

i also didn't vote for either of those std record which means my personal fav in reverie is... prob not gonna place

I'm sure I would love StD but as aforementioned they have been poisoned for me by personal associations, which is probably the most emo possible relationship to have with a band

in reverie still the greatest album of all time tho

obv you dont get the 98 & 99 StD albums without the 95 & 97 lifetime albums

stay what you are rules so much still and i think i have different associations with every song. it also sorta reaches into their future and past simultaneously, "firefly" is like a long lost through being cool track in structure and tempo, "cars & calories" is as power pop as anything on in reverie

obv you dont get the 98 & 99 StD albums without the 95 & 97 lifetime albums

I caved and I'm listening to In Reverie at work and having all kinds of feelings for all kinds of reasons, so THANKS EVERYONE

i saw them live the week (day?) this was released - such a big beautiful dumb golden retriever of an album

I liked the first STD record because it sounded like Lifetime filtered through a more poppy filter. Didn't much care for the stuff after that, though I should revisit I think.

Love the Promise Ring.

fyi i'm going to drop these every 20 min so that we hit #61 by 5:00PM EST.
