Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Monday, 6 March 2017 17:12 (nine years ago)

I think this is the first one of these that I voted for, ha.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Monday, 6 March 2017 17:26 (nine years ago)

Wow did no expect Straylight Run to make it.

Existentialism On Prom NIght has the perfect emo chorus imo

You would kill for this, just a little but, just a little bit, you would, you would...

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Monday, 6 March 2017 17:27 (nine years ago)

I have no connection to Static Prevails by JEW. Always liked the other albums way more.

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Monday, 6 March 2017 17:29 (nine years ago)

I voted for this

Odysseus, Monday, 6 March 2017 17:36 (nine years ago)

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Monday, 6 March 2017 17:37 (nine years ago)

oh looks like it's mislabeled on Spotify as the album 'collected'?

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Monday, 6 March 2017 17:39 (nine years ago)

I love Slip but cut it from my ballot for being post-hardcore rather than emo (arbitrary I know but had to draw the line somewhere).

same

...and then I went and voted for a bunch of post-hardcore anyway

would be interested to hear about people's thoughts about the differentiation between the two, where that line is drawn

I want to change my display name (dan m), Monday, 6 March 2017 17:40 (nine years ago)

saetia is some rad shit imo, voted for them

I want to change my display name (dan m), Monday, 6 March 2017 17:40 (nine years ago)

my entirely private distinction is that emo is generally more melodic, at least when the two terms actually diverge (they're one and the same circa embrace and rites of spring i think). but then: why do i think the boys life record is emo and not post-hardcore (actually i kinda think it's both)

Odysseus, Monday, 6 March 2017 18:04 (nine years ago)

hmm never heard of this one

call all destroyer, Monday, 6 March 2017 18:05 (nine years ago)

gettin' a lot of the hardcore noms out of the way

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Monday, 6 March 2017 18:07 (nine years ago)

yeah I kinda figured that most of my votes would be boosting those records on the low end of the rankings

"kinda both" sums up most of my final analysis on this stuff

I want to change my display name (dan m), Monday, 6 March 2017 18:13 (nine years ago)

mine too dan m. I know the pop stuff in the poll will dominate the top end

Odysseus, Monday, 6 March 2017 18:15 (nine years ago)

Angel Hair was super important to my formative musical experience/depression

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Monday, 6 March 2017 18:24 (nine years ago)

best couple tracks on here?

Yeah it's really hard to pin down - for me the stuff on the post-hardcore side is more riffy, heavier, also less poppy in terms of songwriting (more angular?). Maybe a bit more rooted in the macho side of hardcore too. The screamo/Gravity Records type stuff really complicates things too! Anyway I'm sure people will disagree and would like to hear other takes too - I mean I ended up voting for Hoover and Drive Like Jehu but not Fugazi or Jawbox.

Gavin, Leeds, Monday, 6 March 2017 18:27 (nine years ago)

My #2!

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Monday, 6 March 2017 18:27 (nine years ago)

Spottie, idk, maybe try "The Stool Is Cool" or "Space Ape". The "Stigmata Martyr" cover is probably the most accessible one and it really kicks tbh; sometimes I wonder if it's my favourite!

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Monday, 6 March 2017 18:29 (nine years ago)

i'd agree with that assessment gavin, although i group hoover, drive like jehu, fugazi, and jawbox together and didn't vote for either of them (despite being no. 1 hoover fan 4ever)

Mordy, Monday, 6 March 2017 18:30 (nine years ago)

way too low. Another one of my votes.

Odysseus, Monday, 6 March 2017 18:31 (nine years ago)

I always liked "Witch Hunt Scene from Star Trek" as an insane freak out go to.

Bedroom scene from communion is a more mid tempo one that I like a lot.

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Monday, 6 March 2017 18:31 (nine years ago)

woo first one i voted for, the best record mackaye's made

devvvine, Monday, 6 March 2017 18:32 (nine years ago)

Oh yeah, that's a good one.xp

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Monday, 6 March 2017 18:33 (nine years ago)

re: "Witch Hunt..."

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Monday, 6 March 2017 18:34 (nine years ago)

why ruin a good tradition? (Will M.), Monday, 6 March 2017 18:34 (nine years ago)

here's a good saetia song from youtube, url'd it to avoid taking up too much vertical space

why ruin a good tradition? (Will M.), Monday, 6 March 2017 18:35 (nine years ago)

Tbh, the first time I ever heard the term "emo" was in reference to Fugazi and Hoover. I don't really consider the really macho or hardline/sXe hardcore stuff to be emo but I'm fine with calling any arty post-hardcore emo. In mid-90s Ottawa, I thought of Union of Uranus as 'metal' and Okara and Shotmaker as 'emo'. I even thought Buried Inside was kind of 'emo' at their first couple of shows if only for Nick's before-song speeches but they were def on the metal side.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Monday, 6 March 2017 18:41 (nine years ago)

* macho metalcore/moshcore

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Monday, 6 March 2017 18:41 (nine years ago)

I'm fine with calling any arty post-hardcore emo.

As in, this is how I thought of it 20 years ago. Obv, I get that the meanings of terms change, especially dopey made-up terms like "emo".

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Monday, 6 March 2017 18:42 (nine years ago)

and nobody is more macho than sund4r

Odysseus, Monday, 6 March 2017 18:42 (nine years ago)

liking Witch Hunt and Space Ape thanks.

Crazy that this stuff is gonna be in the same rollout as Fall Out Boy, but here we are. Plenty to discover so far.

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Monday, 6 March 2017 18:43 (nine years ago)

Crazy that this stuff is gonna be in the same rollout as Fall Out Boy,

They were both in my top 10.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Monday, 6 March 2017 18:44 (nine years ago)

nice

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Monday, 6 March 2017 18:49 (nine years ago)

Oh, Saetia is right up my alley. Somehow I missed hearing them.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Monday, 6 March 2017 18:56 (nine years ago)

I was talking about them the other day sund4r

awesome. late discovery and addition to my ballot.

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Monday, 6 March 2017 19:02 (nine years ago)

killer album, right at the center of so many styles

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 6 March 2017 19:05 (nine years ago)

this was lower down on my ballot

Odysseus, Monday, 6 March 2017 19:05 (nine years ago)

Literally the 50th album I added to my ballot, about half an hour before I sent it in. Good find, Spottie!

ArchCarrier, Monday, 6 March 2017 19:05 (nine years ago)

I remember a friend at school being really into this when it came out. I didn't get round to listening to it though.

cajunsunday, Monday, 6 March 2017 19:12 (nine years ago)

Rival Schools is a post quicksand Walter band right?

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Monday, 6 March 2017 19:16 (nine years ago)

Went down a bit of an emo rabbit hole over the last week (see xpost) and I have no idea how I missed this track back in the day, especially since I definitely owned at least two Promise Ring CDs.

I’d be happy to run a tracks poll. Is there still a ilx poll calendar? Would someone be up for making graphics if I do so?
