Prince RIP

So I have a lot of trouble with Art Official Age (i reacquainted myself over the weekend) because it just sounds so fucking terrible. So incredibly thin and bodiless, almost like the effect native to a low bitrate mp3. It sounds like he abused some sort of stereo widening plugin -- synths and rhythm elements are always being spread to the extremes of the field so that they sound incredibly anemic... anytime something is fairly tightly located near the center it has some body and impact to it but so many of the songs have important elements atomized to the winds. It sounds like it could be cool when i describe it in words but it is just an inherently bad sound IMO. Shame because this is a good set of songs and a good set of performances with lots of good ideas in them.

There's a general trend in Prince toward thin DAW-ey terrible synth patches starting from about 1994 on but on AOA it is intolerable to me.

I'm going to purple rain screening on Friday. Been listening to a lot of prime protege stuff (1st Sheila LP, Martika stuff, etc)

Here's hoping that the material from the Vault's start seeing the light of day, but as with all prime era Prince I expect we'll be teased with a release for years.

That Purple Rain deluxe set is probably never coming out either, I guess, huh.

Variety is running with the track listing story as well, saying that this Violet Reality person tracked down the ISRC codes (the 12 digit codes used to ID songs for iTunes, YouTube, and everywhere else).

This comes out and I'm totally buying it, but several of the songs on the original album were longer in the movie - I think "The Beautiful Ones," "Baby I'm A Star," maybe one other. Why on earth wouldn't they include the unedited movie versions in the reissue? And why not also throw in the Time songs that were in the movie and (on Ice Cream Castles) but not on the soundtrack?

If this is true, I'm bummed the longer "Beautiful Ones" isn't on the tracklist.

It'd be kind of neat if they had included some of Michel Colombier's original score, but that's more of a 'we got five discs to fill up' kind of item.
