Is this significantly different to his last few records?

Matt DC, Monday, 27 February 2017 11:24 (nine years ago)

Yeah, it's closer to r&b-Future.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Monday, 27 February 2017 11:29 (nine years ago)

i like both of the recent tapes pretty well. some filler, some keepers. enjoyable rap music

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 27 February 2017 11:41 (nine years ago)

That's what I was hoping, the Future of the 2015 tapes and onwards has never done much for me.

Matt DC, Monday, 27 February 2017 11:45 (nine years ago)

HNDRXX is definitely worth a listen Matt DC. I didn't like anything he released last year.

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Monday, 27 February 2017 13:01 (nine years ago)

these are his strongest albums since his renaissance imo save perhaps 56 nights

J0rdan S., Monday, 27 February 2017 14:15 (nine years ago)

In other news, the Beast Mode instrumentals are fantastic. Never really cared for 'Ooooooh' but it really works without the vocal.

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Monday, 27 February 2017 16:20 (nine years ago)

third album out Friday lol

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 27 February 2017 16:32 (nine years ago)

nice, he must have so much unreleased material

lag∞n, Monday, 27 February 2017 16:40 (nine years ago)

he shouldn't release it all imo. there should be a law about it or something

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Monday, 27 February 2017 16:41 (nine years ago)

too soon to tell but HNDRXX may be his best album. the production has a post-disco richness that, paired with his return to emotional vocals and singing, really really work. lex and everyone who have been bemoaning 'monochromatic-nihilistic-drugs-man Future will be pleased

flopson, Monday, 27 February 2017 17:56 (nine years ago)

wait I like monochromatic nihilistic Future way better than mumbly romantic Future

I'm not especially interested in this quantity of any type of Future or in checking this out yet

lex pretend, Monday, 27 February 2017 17:59 (nine years ago)

the best future imo maintains a subtle balance between the nihilism and the romanticism

marcos, Monday, 27 February 2017 18:00 (nine years ago)

hndrxx has some good moments. deej otm, all of his recent stuff has some really great moments and some boring filler

marcos, Monday, 27 February 2017 18:01 (nine years ago)

well still check it out, lex. i recommend anyone daunted by volume to skip Future and listen to HNDRXX. it's not a return to mumbly romantic Future, it's a whole new thing

flopson, Monday, 27 February 2017 18:02 (nine years ago)

"use me" huh this one is really good

marcos, Monday, 27 February 2017 18:04 (nine years ago)

HNDRXX is way more interesting than the self-titled imo (at least based on a few listens to both)

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 27 February 2017 18:04 (nine years ago)

I will, I'm not avoiding it out of principle or daunted by volume, I'm just tired of wading through so much filler bc Future can't be bothered with quality control or editing

lex pretend, Monday, 27 February 2017 18:04 (nine years ago)

Naw deej's taste chess is off in this case, trying to get a foot in on the backlash before this gets wildly overrated. but it is that good (imo)

flopson, Monday, 27 February 2017 18:04 (nine years ago)

The stretch from Damage to Fresh Air is about as good sequence as future's put on tape, imo. There are a few other highlights throughout, but it tapers off a bit in the second half until the Rihanna song. Overall, it's a very welcome change in direction for Future, who, as much as I love him, really needed one

neva missa lost, wednesday nights on abc (voodoo chili), Monday, 27 February 2017 18:27 (nine years ago)

I do agree that he shouldn't be making 67-minute albums (not should almost anyone really), but there's plenty of material to do a killer 45-min edit of

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 27 February 2017 18:28 (nine years ago)

imo anyone thinking this is better than 56 nights is insane.

ANU (sisilafami), Monday, 27 February 2017 18:51 (nine years ago)

i've kind of written those three tapes out of history and mentally folded them into ds2

flopson, Monday, 27 February 2017 18:56 (nine years ago)

it's true that this is too long. but that's the only crack against it

flopson, Monday, 27 February 2017 18:57 (nine years ago)

jus like 56/monster/bm in 2015 im sure ill end up making a 20-track list that ill end up listening to more than anything else in 2017

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Monday, 27 February 2017 19:03 (nine years ago)

im in the s/t > hdnrix camp atm but it's close

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Monday, 27 February 2017 19:05 (nine years ago)

When you're as popular as Future is are there good commercial (if not artistic) reasons for just flooding streaming services with as much material as you can? I mean three albums in as many weeks feels a little excessive but if there are enough people who are going to play the shit out of all of them...

Matt DC, Monday, 27 February 2017 19:24 (nine years ago)

I've got as far as 'Incredible' so far and I'm loving this. I lost interest in Future when he stopped putting the sugar in with the sleaze, and this has a shitload of both.

Matt DC, Monday, 27 February 2017 19:30 (nine years ago)

The stretch from Damage to Fresh Air is about as good sequence as future's put on tape, imo.

^^

J0rdan S., Monday, 27 February 2017 20:41 (nine years ago)

then you have keep quiet, hallucinating, selfish, solo & sorry in the second half so

the rihanna song is not good

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 27 February 2017 22:02 (nine years ago)

im glad ppl like this though. he's a good artist.

i think its lame how he gets this major critical spotlight where ppl are overanalyzing his weakest shit when other artists of similar consistency dont but

what does this mean? (curious)

flopson, Monday, 27 February 2017 22:20 (nine years ago)

i find his filler to be kind of boring cuz as a personality ive never been super drawn to him (if not at times downright lame re: women—obv if the song is dope i dont much care lol but on the stuff that feels like more of a chore, living w/ it is kind of like "what am i doing here"), at least w/ some of the boom bap stuff that isn't hit-driven (im thinking personally/locally of like Chris & Vic or nationally that nu new york lyrical shit people like) there's more to latch onto as personalities & for the cleverness of the bars etc..... that stuff is treated as so marginal by the main critical establishment cuz its neither club music nor #woke

i think there's sort of a hopelessness baked into the stuff (i think) you're talking about, like the realization that they are sort of the last samurai of a certain tradition that will die with them (thinking esp the older dudes like ka, roc marciano, etc, and obv sean price kinda pioneered that space)

blonde redheads have more fun (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 27 February 2017 22:35 (nine years ago)

yeah there def has been that vibe but lately that lane has been expanding in a huge way .... sha hef & hus kingpin & westside gunn etc etc etc

i dont love all of it & it can def get too dry for me at times but its bringing something the game's missing

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 27 February 2017 22:49 (nine years ago)

I still don't get 56 Nights

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Tuesday, 28 February 2017 00:09 (nine years ago)

i think 56 nights crazy

...i still dgi *shrugs*

flopson, Tuesday, 28 February 2017 00:14 (nine years ago)

i never really noticed if Future was particularly more misogynist than other similar rappers.. tho there were some lines on HNDRXX that raised my hackles

flopson, Tuesday, 28 February 2017 00:18 (nine years ago)

idk i was with you on the 'no personality' thing 3 years ago but now I think he's kind of outmaneuvered if not overcome that line of attack

flopson, Tuesday, 28 February 2017 00:19 (nine years ago)

I'm not saying he's more or less misogynist than anyone, just that the concept of cuts like "collection" are kind of corny in a way that makes me feel secondhand embarrassment

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 28 February 2017 05:16 (nine years ago)

i think deej otm that future's personality...isn't uninteresting but it's not fascinating enough to bear the weight of the volume of material or conversation

lex pretend, Tuesday, 28 February 2017 07:53 (nine years ago)

That said I am coming around on quite a few of the songs on the new one. 2nd half >>> esp

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 28 February 2017 10:32 (nine years ago)

The production on these HNDRXX songs is so refreshing compared to the restraint of his more recent albums. Really loving the breathy backing vox on 'Use Me'

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Tuesday, 28 February 2017 14:24 (nine years ago)

What is going on at 0.38 - 0.41 on 'Fresh Air'? That's gotta be the most impenetrable mumblecore since that Thugger line on 'Lifestyle'

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Tuesday, 28 February 2017 14:33 (nine years ago)

when other artists of similar consistency dont but

you can just say chief keef

royce jung (slothroprhymes), Tuesday, 28 February 2017 16:06 (nine years ago)

cn kinda understand the ~future has no personality~ argument but ultimately its just rap fan bingo imo, which is a lil funny since when he first came out everyones argument against him was that he didnt check the good rapper box and he was just a new tpain or something, ultimately his music just has a ton of emotional resonance and im not sure how u separate that from personality, tho admittedly its not usually how rap works, i do have sympathy for deejs complaints against some of his modes tho personally success future is my least fav

lag∞n, Tuesday, 28 February 2017 16:41 (nine years ago)

i think the reason ppl are willing to dig through his vast and uneven catalog is because hes good and they like him lol

lag∞n, Tuesday, 28 February 2017 16:42 (nine years ago)

you can just say chief keef

i mean sure although he went all last year w/out releasing anything but i could as equally argue mozzy or anyone else, ive been critical of this for ages lol ppl treat rap music like its disposable until it gets certain high art cosign bona fides & then suddenly it's under a microscope
