t/s: sorcerer vs hatchback vs windsurf

Love these, but none are as good as the two Call and Response lps. Or the Rubies record, come to think of it.

"surfing at midnight" is pretty good, but "egyptian sunset" is the big sorcerer jam, imo.

if pressed to vote, probably would go with hatchback just because of "carefree highway"

the one shitty thing these guys did is that track towards the end of coastlines with the funky acoustic riff that sounds straight out of a home&garden type tv show

Am listening to the Hatchback album now, and liking "Carefree Horizon" a great deal, a bit Chris & Cosey crossed with Underworld's "Jumbo" to my untrained ear.

I think I need to revisit the Sorcerer album as i got it at the same time as about 4 others and probably didn't give it the attention it deserved. Over the last couple of months I've been loving the Windsurf and Hatchback albums and look forward to listening to them in some warmer weather this summer

I lurk there sometimes, my engagement with that stuff is heavy dilettante territory, I just listen & enjoy but don't really know anything about it

i like it because it encourages you to be a dilettante; you tend to build yr balearic playlists by skimming other genres in search of a certain kind of 'feel'

yeah I dig that, it's more or less what I do w/all the long drawn-out synth droney stuff I'm rocking these days (schulze, roach, max corbacho), but it's hard for me to overcome my "figure out what the deal is enough to say something authoritative about it" urge with something where the aesthetic has elements of history/"retro"/reference as in some of this stuff. always want to say, "here's what's going on here."

I don't know if that thread is into James Ferraro but that stuff basically sends me into ecstasies of critical theory

I played the Sorcerer album last weekend while sitting up against a giant piece of driftwood on the beach in Victoria, BC. The sun was shining, seagulls were flying, the waves were rushing over the rocks. It was sublime. Perfect soundtrack for a clear, brisk fall day at the beach.

new album is a lot more padilla-esque new age-style balearic, really kind of a big departure from the last two albums imo (i think it blows them out of the water, one of my favorite albums this year fer sher)

^ feeling this, but the video is definitely a bit overkill. almost veering into macintosh plus-levels of '80s irony but that's not always a bad thing

and yeah that international feel compilation looks like it might be worth purchasing if you don't already have it all on vinyl. there's definitely some legit straightfaced smoothness on there, tho most of it has a proggy, sorta '70s vibe to it. if anyone is into this stuff and hasn't heard ifeel studio's "the coptic sun" you are in for a treat (i know we discussed ifeel studio on another thread, but i haven't been posting for like 2 months so i am having a hard time remembering which one).

the dr dunks remix of seahawks' "catch a star" track from earlier this year is pretty cool too, definitely a little reminiscent of "white diamond"

I downloaded their available stuff from itunes this morning and I'm catching up with it between classes. The track itself is sadly a bit Balearic-by-numbers (bongos, bird chirps, Spanish guitars) but I couldn't resist something called "Jack Parsons' Laboratory."

A little bit more muscular than the things he's been posting to Soundcloud for the last couple of years. I like it a lot. There's a cassette edition of 100 as well if you're that way inclined, although the shipping was like three times the cost of the tape so I passed.
