Just got a copy after going to the reading in Seattle. I'm honestly amazed by how good he is at audience q&a's, being able to answer cliched or awkwardly phrased questions in an interesting way that doesn't make the person asking feel stupid is a real gift.

i'm only five songs into this but this is easily my favorite mountain goats record in years. the no guitars approach works remarkably well, the arrangements are so detailed and lovely

also: his late '70s West Coast album. I love the electric piano all over the place.

It's an incredibly warm-sounding album to my ears.

I like it but it's too jazz, I thought the same thing about the last one but it won me around, but I'm pretty sure this one is too jazz.

what is "too jazz"

i feel like this one is pretty jazz i guess but the melodies are more accessible than the more free-falling digressions on beat the champ imo

There are bits of this I just can't seem to get behind right now (the chorus of "High Unicorn Tolerance" for instance) but I'm hoping those objections fall away

I like the woodwind arrangement and hook more than the song.

"Abandoned Flesh" and "Wear Black" are my favs

I love "Abandoned Flesh" so much

On one background listen, this sounds like a 70s smooth pop record about 80s goth rock, which is definitely interesting. Even streaming, the arrangements and recording sound really good.

I would drop "Unicorn" and couple others, but some of this is growing on me. "Abandoned Flesh" is pure ILM catnip.

My wife got her vinyl copy in the mail yesterday, the packaging is gorgeous and the bonus 12" of dark ambient reworkings of tunes is certainly interesting, not to damn it with faint praise
