for some reason that makes me wonder if Arab Strap should be eligible

well i'm gonna insist on johnny foreigner being eligible so it'd be weird for me to draw a line

let's not forget that Conor Oberst guested on Hug and Pint
I dunno they don't feel like a bridge too far to me (tho, like, B&S obviously are) but I'm not gonna die on that hill

― devvvine, Friday, 10 February 2017 21:16 (nine years ago)
at the time of lifted i for sure thought of bright eyes as emo but in hindsight for some reason it feels more indie singer-songwriter'y? obv this has something to do w/ the trajectory his career took since then but lifted seems of a piece w/ the rest of his catalog - like maybe he was never emo it was like one of those things where something presents as X but it turns out it was coincidental and actually it turned out to be Y all along.
― Mordy, Friday, 10 February 2017 21:18 (nine years ago)
yeah agree. interested to see how you end up framing this whole thing with which inclusions/exclusions. good luck
― Spottie, Friday, 10 February 2017 21:19 (nine years ago)
I would say all Oberst things count as emo until you hit, say, Cassadaga.
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 10 February 2017 21:22 (nine years ago)
(both Desaparecidos records are damn near essential pop-punk, also)
imo bright eyes doesn't count, desaparecidos does (the first is as straight up of an emo record as you can get in its design), but i won't fight anyone over it

How do people feel about 'The Blood, The Body, The Machine'?

thermals have more in common with like the breeders than they do emo
is this just an emo/poppunk thing or is screamo / hardcore gonna be involved too?
― Spottie, Friday, 10 February 2017 21:30 (nine years ago)
.... that's a tough call
― the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Friday, 10 February 2017 21:31 (nine years ago)
Fevers and Mirrors is maybe the most emo thing ever
I think Thermals almost count as pop-punk but I'm inclined to agree with brad
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 10 February 2017 21:32 (nine years ago)
imo it will be more fun if we include screamo
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 10 February 2017 21:33 (nine years ago)
screamo for sure going to be included
― Mordy, Friday, 10 February 2017 21:34 (nine years ago)
in terms of the actual songwriting? eh
― the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Friday, 10 February 2017 21:35 (nine years ago)
hell yeah, at least the bits I remember ("The Calendar Hung Itself" stands out for this), though I could use a relisten
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 10 February 2017 21:38 (nine years ago)
"calendar" is the closest it gets imo
― the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Friday, 10 February 2017 21:41 (nine years ago)
anyway iirc i said upthread i wouldn't fight anyone over this so i'm not sure why i'm doing it now lol
lol I don't know why I'm arguing about records I have 0% chance of voting for and haven't listened to in full in over a decade
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 10 February 2017 21:42 (nine years ago)
Haha. not really sure where else to post this but there's just enough pop-punk in here to warrant sharing. I spent like 2 hours messing w this last night:http://themagicipod.comnormally i scoff at stuff like that but i couldn't resist

blood command fall enough into a venn diagram of like... actual pop metal, metalcore, post-hardcore, emo, etc. that i think i can post them here. their new song is wonderful https://soundcloud.com/tigerfysisiskformat/blood-command-cult-drugs

Not sure if it got discussed anywhere last year (still no search feature?) but I keep coming back to this Ian Sweet LP. Not many other bands that can pick me up and make my stomach churn in the same song

Still catching up on everything but faves from this year have been Oliver Houston and Dryjacket. This track is particularly delightful:

It's also been a dream winter for emo gigs in the UK! So far I've caught The Hotelier, Tiny Moving Parts, The Wonder Years, PUP, Pinegrove, Crying... Martha this month. TMP were the happiest band I have ever seen in my life.
Am I missing a Spotify/YouTube playlist for this year's thread? If not, I'll happily throw one together.
