new Tornado Wallace record is real nice

ciderpress, Saturday, 4 February 2017 17:41 (nine years ago)

oh yes it is! "today" and "voices" have been the early gems for me but actually most of the tracks are pretty alluring

dyl, Sunday, 5 February 2017 18:43 (nine years ago)

I love how "Trance Encounters" seems to quote "Welcome To The Pleasuredome"

nice sleeve too!

I have to say that this nu_balearic thing is really saturating my ears. They all sound the same and honestly they don't me give any emotion like a real balearic song. And all this nu_music is boring, like the mix above which apparently is a 2017 greatest hits: yawn.

M.C., Wednesday, 8 February 2017 08:22 (nine years ago)

... 2016 greatest hits

M.C., Wednesday, 8 February 2017 08:23 (nine years ago)

I'm enjoying this Tornado Wallace record but it takes a particular kind of barefacedness to make an album full of R2D2 beach bar vibes and ashram Toto shit like Voices and then call it LONELY PLANET.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 8 February 2017 08:55 (nine years ago)

missed this last year but this ep, and particularly this track, is really amazing, deep cinematic electronic music, maybe a touch of carl craig or derrick may. no youtube unfortunately.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 8 February 2017 11:50 (nine years ago)

it's modaji on utopia records btw

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 8 February 2017 11:51 (nine years ago)

. They all sound the same and honestly they don't me give any emotion like a real balearic song

I don't know enough about nu-balearic to really say, but I can feel this also

I'm enjoying this Tornado Wallace record but it takes a particular kind of barefacedness

Ditto, music should have a bit of magic in it. The problem here is the low bar of this style is much less irritating than the lower end of other styles, so records which aren't that good get more of a pass. I like the inconsequential but it should be the magic of the leaf in the breeze, some of these are the leaf in the drawer

saer, Wednesday, 8 February 2017 14:02 (nine years ago)

oh shit, so excited for new gaussian curve

dyl, Wednesday, 8 February 2017 17:08 (nine years ago)

Ended up playing the first GC so much, always a joy to come back to it. That record is the epitome of a grower, first couple of listens went by like the breeze. But now...

Benylin Ascent (NickB), Wednesday, 8 February 2017 19:00 (nine years ago)

Was only recently I noticed it had a big red cross on the front cover, has definitely worked for me as a curatve some days

Benylin Ascent (NickB), Wednesday, 8 February 2017 19:04 (nine years ago)

hah, now that you mention it, i did recommend gaussian curve to a friend who was having a hard time after stressing too much about US politics. whether it helped or not remains to be seen

also looking forward to some amazing unreleased stuff that was on young marco's BiS mix that's supposed to be out on his label early this year

that is excellent, very Gigi Masin but that makes sense

boxedjoy, Friday, 10 February 2017 21:50 (nine years ago)

the 55 cancri e album is quite nice - sort of folky scandinavian vibes.

I'm sure it's been posted before but I just discovered Chris Coco's Balearic playlist on spotify. 28 hours worth!

Gaussian Curve (minus Young Marco) on Charlie Bones' ever excellent NTS show:
https://www.mixcloud.com/NTSRadio/the-do-you-breakfast-show-w-charlie-gigi-masin-jonny-nash-gilbr-20th-february-2017

millmeister, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 11:58 (nine years ago)

Gonna check this out but the host talks way too much and basically makes the show unlistenable a 2nd time. Wish he just did an air break every 20mins instead of every minute and a half.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 16:39 (nine years ago)

It's a radio show. I guess I'm just reacting to all those faceless Soundcloud mixes out there.

millmeister, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 16:58 (nine years ago)

It's interesting once but has no replay value. Maybe have an interview section and a 20-30min mix section. The constant chatter is distracting. Of course I complain about everything so…

I keep listening , btw, just expressing my preference.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 19:30 (nine years ago)

I know what you're saying. I don't mind the chat however - must be my age.

millmeister, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 20:30 (nine years ago)

People speaking is an abomination. Reverie is a fragile land with scant defences, ill prepared to deal with the marauding invaders with not only simple words, but full sentences, barely pausing for breath, crushing the ever endangered dream state

saer, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 20:41 (nine years ago)

Not really. There's a place for continuous DJ mixes and there's a place for radio. Take your pick.

millmeister, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 21:08 (nine years ago)

I'm 44, so maybe it's my age?

i like this

( ^_^) (Lamp), Tuesday, 21 February 2017 22:05 (nine years ago)

Haven't heard the Gil'r portion of that show but I just finished the Gigi/Jonny part and it was nice. I enjoyed the banter and it didn't irritate me as much as it has.

Really loving the new stuff from both Jonny and Gigi though. Can't wait for the new Gaussian Curve LP. Would like to see them live but doubt that will ever come to America (outside of NYC/LA).

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 22:45 (nine years ago)

yeah, that wav fuzz ep is good

I love this thread so much. I feel like discovering this stuff through ILM has really affected not just the music I listen to but the way I listen to music. also I'm drunk, thanks guys

love harvey trying to explain the meaning of balearic at about 12 mins in this: https://vimeo.com/29652200

Not really feeling the Wolf Muller/Young Marco tracks... almost like there's just not enough "there" there.

The recent Outro Tempo compilation on Music From Memory is excellent.

Nice interview with compiler John Gomez on Dr Rob's new blog here

groovypanda, Monday, 6 March 2017 10:57 (nine years ago)

Just came here to post this. It's not 100% bangers or anything, but there are more than enough tracks on here to satisfy anyone looking for a good mostly-mellow afternoon jammer. As with most things, I wish it was all instrumental, but hey what can you do

Wimmels, Monday, 6 March 2017 16:14 (nine years ago)

Can we have some bass in this thread?!

Mark Barrott's EP is pretty nice.

afriendlypioneer, Friday, 17 March 2017 18:53 (nine years ago)

do not get the Horsebeach love at all and think they stick out like a sore thumb on this otherwise excellent thread

Wimmels, Saturday, 18 March 2017 00:05 (nine years ago)

yeah, Horsebeach sounds like a Real Estate knockoff has nothing to do with this thread...
