re: hip hop evolution, it's pretty transparently "we read jeff chang's can't stop won't stop and dan charnas's the big payback & made a doc series out of them"...but...like it's really cool to see all this footage of, for example, the fantastic romantic five vs. cold crush, or actually tracking down coke la rock to talk about the herc parties, it's a great watch either way and saw a lot of footage of stuff i'd read about but never seen

I don't know shit about Lil Ugly Mane (I know only marginally more than shit about the current rap world, but I digress) other than that he is from Richmond, VA and he gets compared to a lot of things that I don't have much time for under most circumstances. But when I saw that an album he released under the moniker Bedwetter, was the #1 album of the year at Rate Your Music chart (yeah, it's early, but still) so I checked it out.
http://liluglymane.bandcamp.com/album/volume-1-flick-your-tongue-against-your-teeth-and-describe-the-present
Apparently Volume 1: Flick Your Tongue Against Your Teeth and Describe the Present was accompanied by an impassioned Facebook post by Mane decrying this county's mental healthcare situation and how it failed him when he tried to seek help.
The album is pretty harrowing stuff, produced claustrophobically perfectly emulating a fucked-up hazy mental state, but with forcefully delivered words - like he's fighting against himself for clarity he desperately needs - with an eloquence and especially a vulnerability that, frankly, seems a complete contrast from the crap he gets compared to. It's like he realized nobody's hard enough to not need help sometimes, and that the inability to get it perpetuates a lot of bullshit. A very personal statement that points out, maybe unintentionally, how whole communities can be lost over our inability to deal with it.
Personal therapy that also critiques our current inability to deal with mental health issues as a society with a laid back noir style that makes me flex my head as well.

Ambrose Akinmusire and Kool A.D.: Origami Harvest (WORLD PREMIERE
Jazz trumpet virtuoso Ambrose Akinmusire joins his “unfurling lines that confound expectation” (Chicago Tribune) with rapper Kool A.D.’s “social consciousness infused irreverence” (Colorlines) to create a brand new chamber music work co-commissioned by Liquid Music and the Ecstatic Music Festival. Guided by Akinmusire’s “strong aesthetic compass” (The New York Times), this uniquely explorative and expressive world premiere collaboration will feature the “fearless, precise and forward-looking” (The Chicago Reader) Mivos Quartet alongside pianist Sam Harris and drummer Marcus Gilmore.
“For a jazz trumpet player, you couldn't be more on top of the world than Ambrose Akinmusire.” – NPR
“A thoughtful effort to deconstruct and rearrange cultural objects in ways that challenge our deepest assumptions.” – Mother Jones on the music of Kool A.D.
