I'm not sure I follow you. Remixing the album 25 years later is like Star Wars Special Edition type bullshit to me, and quite a different thing than using a multitrack studio to have the ability to tweak it before its release as opposed to just cutting it live to 2-track. Let's remix Exile on Main Street and Sgt Peppers and Pet Sounds while we're at it.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 5 September 2004 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i think a certain amount of remixing occurs when they do remastering anyway.

splooge (thesplooge), Sunday, 5 September 2004 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

monkeying around so drastically
See also the new edition of Blizzard of Ozz with rerecorded rhythm section, the echo drums on the old ZZTop album reissues etc.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 5 September 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

ie most remasters don't totally change the way the whole album sounds like the Raw Power one does.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 5 September 2004 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

"I only bothered to listen to the Iggy-mix CD a few times before I sold it back"

YES

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 5 September 2004 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

yes...

i don't know bowie's version, but iggy's mix is so f*%%@in' LOUD.

So I vote for Raw Power.

Elvis is Dead, Sunday, 5 September 2004 12:13 (twenty-one years ago)

wasn't iggy pretty unhappy with bowie's mix but he couldn't do anything abt it until 20+ years after release? I agree that it's mostly a con but the fact that you can do these kind of remixes a kind of a plus as far as you know, making albums.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 5 September 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

From what I've heard of Iggy's mix, it just sounds like a generic hard rock record now. The Bowie mix is way better as it seems to be mixed only in that they probably moved faders to get at all their cocaine in the cracks of the console. I think the reason people may be down on that mix is they probably heard it as a first generation CBS CD, and those managed to make a lot of classic albums sound terrible (also see some of Miles Davis' albums and Exile on Main Street).

Funhouse is infinitely better, either way. After the first side of Raw Power that album has nothing going for it, and, as mentioned earlier, "I Got A Right" and "Gimme Some Skin" blow away pretty much anything on Raw Power.

Vic Funk, Sunday, 5 September 2004 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Regardless of mixing, I just think the SONGS are better on Funhouse.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 5 September 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

OTM

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Sunday, 5 September 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Funhouse all the way

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 5 September 2004 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

garage rock in extremisis vs. alice cooper with cred

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 5 September 2004 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

"extremisis" would be a good band name

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 5 September 2004 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

sure i like funhouse better. pat pat. but how about listening to raw power on headphones super loud? its a rewarding experience.

artdamages (artdamages), Monday, 6 September 2004 06:19 (twenty-one years ago)

'Funhouse' is the only 'real' record. Everything else by [or with or whatever] Iggy Pop is very strange. Like, sort of cabaret music. Why? That is very strange to me. I don't complain about it being cabaret music, I can still listen 'past' the cabaret-ness of it, but I wonder why he was never again able to make a record that was not cabaret? On the other hand, the reason seems obvious.

antonius, Monday, 6 September 2004 06:55 (twenty-one years ago)

are you a european?

MATH BLASTER MYSTERY! (ex machina), Monday, 6 September 2004 07:01 (twenty-one years ago)

haha thats funny everytime.

artdamages (artdamages), Monday, 6 September 2004 07:07 (twenty-one years ago)

only if cabaret means brilliant, succinctly eloquent lyrics and hard as fuck songs that smack you round the head like a fork lift truck.

splooge (thesplooge), Monday, 6 September 2004 08:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Raw Power, as the title track is my favorite Stooges song bar none.

David Allen (David Allen), Monday, 6 September 2004 08:18 (twenty-one years ago)

four months pass...
why is "fun house" so satisfying???

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 13 January 2005 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Because it's just an amazing rock'n'roll record. Period.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 13 January 2005 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, but there's something unusually SATISFYING about it. you'd think it'd be one of those records you'd have to play when you're in a certain mood, but i ALWAYS enjoy listening to it, in all sorts of moods.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 13 January 2005 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

also someone PLEASE tell me how the snares are recorded on this record, because they have always sounded so great to me. maybe they are just mixed really high??

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 13 January 2005 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Uh...because IT KNOCKS THE FUCKING WALLS DOWN?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 13 January 2005 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn, must play this now.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 13 January 2005 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i AM playing it right now buddy!

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 13 January 2005 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Does anybody else have Declaration Of War? It appears to have been some kind of ultra-limited-edition vinyl-only compilation of the best outtakes from the Funhouse sessions box. It's pretty goddamn great; the track listing is "TV Eye," "Down On The Street," "Loose," "Dirt," "Slidin' The Blues," "1970," "Fun House" and "Lost In The Future," and it begins with that great bit from the box where Iggy is imitating a wrestling announcer introducing the Stooges. I didn't even know it existed until a friend burned it for me - I've never seen it listed on the Rhino site or anything.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 13 January 2005 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd been playing Black Grape and the Happy Mondays just now, and suddenly throwing on Fun House is just so much more FULFILLING than those records (not knocking them, mind you). But fuck...."TV Eye" is playing right now, and it's just fucking UNSTOPPABLE!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 13 January 2005 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm listening to it in my mind right now.

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 13 January 2005 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

The drums on "Loose" alone.

(err...that's Scotty "Rock Action" Asheton, btw)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 13 January 2005 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

...And it's not just a matter of knocking the walls down and you're done. It's like this ecstatic, extended kicking of ass over a long period of time.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 13 January 2005 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Well said.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 13 January 2005 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i really like iggy's vocals on "dirt" and "1970." it sounds like he spent a lot of time on them. i guess the box set (which i haven't heard and don't necessarily want to) would confirm that...

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 14 January 2005 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

fun house and raw power are in one folder on my computer, so they're basically one album as far as I'm concerned.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 14 January 2005 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

re: raw power bowie mix: itz tinny cuz bowie knew the bass playing was crap and the best thing to do was focus on iggys vocsa--check out the way theyr tracked. hot stuff, but mayeb more "art" than FUNHOUSEs full on Rock And Roll = Sherman Tank action. So sensations win again.

Snappy (sexyDancer), Friday, 14 January 2005 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
Fun House is the greatest rock & roll record of all time. I feel sorry for people who can't understand that.

shemp, Sunday, 13 March 2005 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

RAW POWER is so much better in every conceievable way. I don't get all the Fun House love, really. "Down on the Street" and "1970" are brilliant, but as a whole it isn't spectacular. Raw Power is spectacular, from start to finish. Sure, it sort of declines in quality with "Shake Appeal," but the first 6 tracks are, quite possibly, the best strech ever.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Sunday, 13 March 2005 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

As for the mixes, I prefer the original Bowie mix, except for "Gimmee Danger".. which Bowie absolutely butchered.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Sunday, 13 March 2005 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, "Fun House" the song has more rock in it than all of Raw Power. Not that Raw Power's bad ("Death TriP" is fucking amazing), but come on, how can you not get off on how completely out of control Fun House gets starting with "1970"? No music I've ever heard, live or otherwise, has been that unhinged and powerful at the same time, invigorating I guess, as the last three songs on Fun House.

shemp, Monday, 14 March 2005 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

"Dude, "Fun House" the song has more rock in it than all of Raw Power"

'search and destroy' / 'gimme danger' >>>>>>> 'down on the street' / 'loose'

penetration' / 'raw power' = 'tv eye' / 'dirt'

'death trip' > 'fun house'

funhouse also has '1970', but raw power still wins on a countback

chris andrews (fraew), Monday, 14 March 2005 00:25 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, the debut scores well too

'1969' / 'i wanna be your dog' (possibly better than RP and a waaay better opening than FH)

'no fun' / 'ann' (holds its own, 'ann' being of particular note...)

'little doll' (maybe not as powerful and crazy as the other two albums outro's, but its real catchy

chris andrews (fraew), Monday, 14 March 2005 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

'search and destroy' / 'gimme danger' >>>>>>> 'down on the street' / 'loose'

penetration' / 'raw power' = 'tv eye' / 'dirt'

you are insane. no, really.

tipustiger, Monday, 14 March 2005 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe it's whatever one you hear first that does it for you. I still can't imagine liking Raw Power more except I guess it might make sense if you heard that one first. And anyways it's not like we're saying one's good and one's bad but disagreeing about which of two albums that rule rules more.

shemp, Monday, 14 March 2005 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah but how can anyone discount the might of 'gimme danger' and 'search and destroy'?

chris andrews (fraew), Monday, 14 March 2005 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

They're mighty. But "Fun House" is monolithic, and so are "Dirt," "LA Blues," and "1970."

shemp, Monday, 14 March 2005 01:26 (twenty-one years ago)

The people in this thread who were seriously arguing in favor of Iggy's played-through-a-blown-out-answering-machine wannabe-Guitar-Wolf mix of Raw Power were collectively out of their fucking minds.
