"Seriously - do you own these to listen to them or just to post on ILM?"
i have always bought a lot of records. and i listen to them all. ilx came after that fact. i just want to hear everything i haven't heard.
i have always loved that meco album.
despite what i just said, i now own two copies of that brother juniper album.
― scott seward, Saturday, 22 September 2007 23:44 (sixteen years ago) link
so, yeah, the meco and the brother juniper are the only ones that i have heard before. that bull record has one AWESOME acid-drenched guitar jam on it. the rest isn't as hot. i bought these along with a ton of other oddball/xian/exotica/funky/weirdo records. i couldn't resist.
that funky lionel hampton album on brunswick is awesome!

Yeah, Flight FINAL has a way of standing out in the goodwill racks. Never seen that Prince Buster, only the Album Generic Buster one

this thread made me mildly happier after a shitty day that ended with being told (via email) that my radio show sucks and is a waste of effort and is better replaced by two guys in their late 40s talking about frank zappa for 20 minutes at a time. and then playing frank zappa for ten minutes. then talking about him for another 20 minutes. etc.
thx scott.

that gotham album is good. i learned that gotham were the first openly gay music group of note. i did not know that.
so, el sabor, did they just tell you you suck or did they actually yank you off the air? tell them to eat it.
the party is at my house! every day and in every way.
― scott seward, Sunday, 23 September 2007 13:47 (sixteen years ago) link
they didn't really say i sucked, they just passive-aggressively stuck me on at the latest possible time slot after the old farts and a generic indie dj who's been at the station for three whole months. i've been there for ten years. blah blah livejournal cry.
but yeah, "eat it" is what my reply amounts to.
i will bring this to the party:

Man... I keep looking for the Bob McFadden & Dor on eBay and it always sells for $60+. Where did all this stuff come from? Or is that a secret?
I haven't done real vinyl archeological digs (flea markets & dollar bins) since I was in high school.... I must try again some time.
― eatandoph, Monday, 24 September 2007 00:54 (sixteen years ago) link
i bought these on ebay. my bob mcfadden copy is not in 60 dollar shape. but it's okay. playable and all that. this was my last big splurge on ebay for a while. i made a lot of money selling stuff this month, so i indulged myself. this lot spoke to me. there were 500 records all together. i paid 550 dollars total. i'm happy. i had to throw away about 50 records because of condition, but luckily nothing that i really cared about. condition was kind of all over the place, but i would say about 75% were in decent VG/VG+ shape. And a lot were immaculate or even sealed. the stuff i don't want i'll end up giving to the thift store or the record store. it's the cycle of life. the rest i'll keep. some i might sell.
the thrift stores on martha's vineyard might be inundated with arthur lyman records pretty soon.
― scott seward, Monday, 24 September 2007 03:49 (sixteen years ago) link
having said that about arthur lyman, a lot of the 50's stereo stuff i got sounds sooooooo good and is in excellent shape. which is the only way i will listen to that stuff. that marty gold living stereo up there sounds insane. like many hepcats of a certain age, i bought a ton of exotica type stuff in the 80's, but i got rid of most of it (i had a short-lived store in philly and i sold lots of that stuff at the beginning of the gen x retro boom in the early 90's). so i haven't actually listened to an esquivel record in years and years. they still sound amazing! the 50's was the zenith of sound if you ask me. not that anyone asked me.
― scott seward, Monday, 24 September 2007 03:56 (sixteen years ago) link
scott, what does this one sound like?
<img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1310/1422836281_4d269a5a5e.jpg">
that looks like an old fam friend on the cover that worked on a buncha records in the 70s.
― chaki, Monday, 24 September 2007 04:11 (sixteen years ago) link
the bull record? it has one killer guitar jam. some of the other songs are kinda cheesy. the bull dude himself plays guitar on the album. i'll have to dig it out, because it has his name on there. he plays like prince! or prince as hendrix. at least on that one track. and that one track definitely makes the album worth owning.
― scott seward, Monday, 24 September 2007 04:16 (sixteen years ago) link

OMG Ten Commandments! I haven't heard that song since high school! Arti Sangrah looks like a winner too. This is Bull — is it so? Same goes for The More You Drink, The Better I Sound. And I've spent a few minutes trying to figure out what the title of that black & white one with the two guys heads on it says.

i'll definitely post it tomorrow. i'd have to dig through boxes and i don't want to wake anyone up.

that cymande album is nice to have. in great shape too. sadly, the trashmen album was kinda trashed. i've always wanted a nice copy of that. but there was so much other good stuff that i didn't stay sad for long.

it's actually kinda hard to find nice used copies of csn/y vinyl. people played the shit out of them.

That Bennett album is a great one! Is it a six-eye? It's even out of print on CD now. This is Criss is a fine Sonny Criss LP, too.

I love Latimore doing "Let's Straighten it Out." Awesome chitlin-circuit soul.

What on earth is on that Jack Van Impe record? Just sermons?e
― Myonga Vön Bontee, Monday, 24 September 2007 15:49 (sixteen years ago) link
ranting about how the hippie culture and communism is taking america down into the sewer, if i recall correctly. dope, guns, and fucking in the streets.
oh! and jack runs through the white panther party platform on the b-side! think he mentions sinclair and the mc5 too.

i'm gonna wait for when the kids are in day care to listen to the van impe record. i don't want to scare them.
today i've been digging the joe venuti fiddle record, the shut downs & hill climbs drag racing comp on liberty ("kickstand" by the ventures is hot!), the woodie guthrie dustbowl collection (so metal! so many dust songs: the great dust storm, talkin' dust bowl blues, dust cain't kill me, dust pneumonia blues, dust bowl refugee, dust bowl blues, dusty old dust!!), the tony bennett album (it's in nice shape and is the 6-eye stereo pressing. i'm not a big tony fan, but this is a solid record), the flora purim record (so cool! and so friggin' funky.), the dicky wells record, and the gus bivona big band record.

Thanks for the answer!
I believe I was conflating him with that "Communism, Hypnotism and The Beatles" guy.
