optimo and harvey in the same night ? doesn't it sometimes feel like certain nights there is nothing cool going on, and then suddenly one night is overloaded w stuff ? meh. grumble.

opted out of harvey for the jg wilkes/tussle show and i'm not disappointed- some great selections and he even won over my mnml friend with some truly flawless beatmatching. turnout was pretty dismal tho (perhaps everyone was at harvey's set?)

Really liked the dj loft at DaDa lounge, sound systems decent too!

Kind of a happy hour only crowd right now but we're gonna change that 1st and 3rd Fridays. We ended up playing a solid 3 hour set of chugging beardo and some recently acquired slo-mo disco *ahem* thx jaxon *ahem*

Tonight: jamming frankendance at Matador.

harvey was cool. his set was good disco/house, but nothing mindblowing. def a weird crowd. prolly a bunch of older burner/raver/club kids that knew of garth and jeno. overall i had a good time though, probably because i was pretty drunk and i snuck in :D

just a reminder- if any of you are in the mission tonight for cinco de mayo, definitely consider dropping by LASZLO's for another night of beardo/slo-mo/disco craziness

my friend is spinning latin house and jazz at mars bar. alas, i am going east for a bit. but yeah! an authentic mexican spinning real shit. (laszlo's would be tempting though)

OH ALSO: out of curiosity, what do y'all think of david harness? he has this one remix (of Floetry's "Say Yes") that is an ear-worm to the max, but i can't really find much else of his that makes me go 'mmm-hmm yeah yeah.'

i caught the flu on sunday, and have been sooo sick ever since so i don't think im gunna make the cinco de drinko party at laszlo :(

also to all y'all DJs...i've been here for a year. have some friends that do nights here and there, mostly at Aunt Charlie's, the Gangway, Makeout Room, & the Knockout. but wanted to get a more nuanced opinion-- how should i go about plying my skills? i'd be mostly doing the deep house/soul disco/jazz thing, which doesn't seem too popular among most of those places. i could also do very long sets of more varied nature-- more techno etc. i've opened for Boys Noize and Kelley Polar and done lots of 150+ house parties in various places all over.

so in another word, suggestions of places to hit up? peeps i should talk to?

i'm working on two things right now, but given my schedule, i'm allowing myself til the end of the summer to finish...the first is a track using a sample of a Ba-Benzele pygmy song (Song of rejoicing after returning from the hunt, rhythm djoboko) and the second is a very unauthorized remix of alicia keys...which is sort of embarassing, but i fucking love her.

anyway, 'one time' gave me some good tips. so hats off.

anyone check out thomas at amnesia? how was it?

amazing. i got there around midnight. totally packed. good crowd. thomas was up on the stage dancing. how old is this guy? how long has he been doing this? he played great chicago house and disco and a bunch of edits.

one in particular i want to remember. i've heard it before. upbeat, gospelly, soulful disco and the lyrics were something like (not nec in this order, just what i remember)

yeah thomas has been around for a while, he's probably in his mid to late 40's, same as harvey, actually used to dj with harvey in the uk when they were doing the tonka crew parties. i first encountered him via the wicked parties in the mid 90's where he dj'ed along jeno, garth. back then i remembered his style would always stray from the rest of wicked crew, his sets were always focused on the more percussive aspect of house and disco. he was part of are weapons in the early 00's but kinda was around the same scene in nyc that james murphy came out of, playing disco, rock, post punk together. now that shit is par for the course but thomas and harvey have been doing this shit for almost two decades now. sounds like a great night. wish i could have went.

nah, i mean, i know who thomas is and all that, but i'm saying, he's been doing this for so long, and he's getting up there in years, and he was having a BLAST onstage. i only wish to have that enthusiasm when i'm older.

i feel you. esp after playing so many parties, so many records you would think there would be jadedness or burnout. i am sure that is the case with alot of dj's but yeah its def inspiring and cool to see that enthusiasm in someone of that age, and still killing it to top it off.
