it's not really a synonym imo

that didn't seem implied to me
― Evan, Tuesday, 13 December 2016 18:07 (seven years ago) link
u can be inauthentic without being performative. imo "performative" speaks more to a style of social media behavior than the actual ideas that behavior is promoting. it's the personalized version of a fluff piece PR ad from Exxon about how they care about the environment and the future.
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 13 December 2016 18:08 (seven years ago) link
Yeah, that's what I was getting at. I guess I tend to have negative associations with the word 'performative' in this context
― Wimmels, Tuesday, 13 December 2016 18:09 (seven years ago) link
how can media be 'performatively' woke rather than just woke? all media is performance

― flopson, Tuesday, 13 December 2016 18:14 (seven years ago) link
Some you're saying it's only performative if you're saying it while waving your hands around in the air or something?

there's a lot of stuff that goes on behind the scenes, who the CEOs are, how the company is structured, how people are hired, how employees are managed, how content is cut and edited, etc.
or yeah, you could just stop and look at the final product/performance, words on a screen and think that's good enough.

where are akbar and jeff when we need them?
"performatively woke" is the latest iteration of jazz hands.
my connotation of "performative" is advocating for something else but still managing to make it all about you. that seems like a useful concept.

oh come on jesus spends large chunks of the christian gospels denouncing just this kind of "performative" behaviour. human evil was not invented in 1996 by steve case.
― increasingly bonkers (rushomancy), Tuesday, 13 December 2016 19:52 (seven years ago) link
ok that is useful, i guess. i thought PW was, like, ppl/corps sharing a bunch of SJ stuff on social media but not putting in any 'work'. so in case of online media, where literally all you do is write stuff for ppl to share, the 'performative' is redundant cus thats all you can do
― flopson, Tuesday, 13 December 2016 21:32 (seven years ago) link
but yea woke sucks in general imo. white libs/leftists realized saying 'politically correct' makes u sound like a Trump supporter so we just made up a new word

id argue theres writing that is doing work—journalism, smart criticism, whatever— & there is writing that brands itself as "doing work" & really just writing from a script/reiterating cliches to enhance one's social status

https://www.bustle.com/articles/134893-what-does-woke-mean-theres-more-to-the-slang-term-than-you-think
The actual phrasing of "woke," it should be mentioned, has been floating around black social media circles for years. It's not the first AAVE word to be taken up by the greater public ("bae" and "twerk" and "trap queen" are just a few), and it certainly won't be the last. If you are interested in a detailed timeline that charts the full evolution of "woke" from its first pop culture mention to its use today, I'd highly suggest checking out this article by Charles Pulliam-Moore. It's fascinating.
Erykah Badu first used "stay woke" in her 2008 song Master Teacher, and by 2011 the phrase had begun to gain popularity as a way of describing an informed, questioning, self-educating individual, which is essentially how we use it today.
i did my research, now you do yours

WOKE COFFEE is an open area for explorations of techniques, tastes, and traditions of coffee. It is a single place that curates, consolidates and communicates the expansive amount of products, processes, and people of the coffee industry, for people who want to know where to start. Its is a space where for learning and respectful dialogue about the issues surrounding coffee and society, providing energy to bring forth progress in the world.

sure but 'performatively woke' (though yes now its own cliche) ascribes a selfish motive beyond simply "bad writing"

the funny thing about "performatively woke" is that the phrase is used both by leftists to suggest gaucheness and by SJWs to suggest inauthenticity. it's so ubiquitous at this point that it's become pretty meaningless
― k3vin k., Tuesday, 13 December 2016 22:25 (seven years ago) link
I cringe whenever I see white people using "woke" on social media. Maybe this is wrong, IDK. Feels unlikely they are actually using it IRL.

it's mostly used by dumb people in a dumb way and that's why it has to go. even if it came from some cool badu world. other people ruined it.
