The Iggy Pop album is way better than I would have expected a 2016 Iggy Pop album to be. It's OK.

Have King appeared anywhere yet btw

speaking of posthumous albums, I realize this is me reverting back to primordial commenter form but everyone seems to have dismissed the school of seven bells record

Yeah, that's unfortunate. It's an excellent album.

jmm, Wednesday, 30 November 2016 19:00 (nine years ago)

Yeah, I've been disappointed to see School Of Seven Bells miss out. I don't think they were ever really that popular with the critics. I have no idea why.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 30 November 2016 19:59 (nine years ago)

SVIIB is probably my favourite album of the year that doesn't have a Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith credit

Paste Magazine. Lots of things I've never heard of.

Not me! One of my most played records this year.

I listened to School of Seven Bells for about a week and then haven't gone back to it. I've spent more time this year with the Monkees album.

¶ (DJP), Wednesday, 30 November 2016 21:13 (nine years ago)

Both are mighty fine things.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 30 November 2016 21:17 (nine years ago)

The Paste top 5 is pretty great, except for Car Seat Headrest clogging it up. The rest is boooooring af.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 30 November 2016 22:30 (nine years ago)

(Not all bad, but a lot bad, and the good things are the same things I've already seen.)

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 30 November 2016 22:31 (nine years ago)

Paste Magazine? Boring? No way.

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Wednesday, 30 November 2016 22:37 (nine years ago)

Routinely shit-talking Paste is my part-time hobby, so co-sign.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 30 November 2016 22:45 (nine years ago)

Is anyone on ILM a fan of Car Seat Headrest? I have some friends who love it and I just don't get the EOY praise it's getting. Seems like run of the mill indie rock to me and boring one at that.

No longer active (Moka), Thursday, 1 December 2016 00:38 (nine years ago)

Cate Le Bon seems like a real oversight on that Paste list (judging by the other artists on there).

Ross, Thursday, 1 December 2016 01:35 (nine years ago)

Always an eclectic list:

as loath as I am to approve of ted gioia I am listening to this hannah epperson album and it is quite good

If all the picks on that Treble list are as good as the first one, I'm going to be spending a lot of time with it.

o. nate, Thursday, 1 December 2016 02:44 (nine years ago)

Listening to 1021 new albums a year... what a life

a but (brimstead), Thursday, 1 December 2016 03:20 (nine years ago)

what a crushing bore. take out the jazz and you're left with what everyone else has

Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Thursday, 1 December 2016 03:46 (nine years ago)

Radiohead always suffers from buyer's regret in the EOY lists. I could bet AMSP would be in several top 10s if they had released it a month ago.

No longer active (Moka), Thursday, 1 December 2016 04:32 (nine years ago)

Their releases always get hyped to death is what I mean.

No longer active (Moka), Thursday, 1 December 2016 04:35 (nine years ago)

Lists are missing the Tribe Called Quest album. This is unacceptable.

Siegbran, Thursday, 1 December 2016 14:46 (nine years ago)

Cate Le Bon seems like a real oversight on that Paste list

I wonder what effect keeping an album off of Spotify has on eoy list placement.

http://www.stereogum.com/featured/the-50-best-albums-of-2016/

Some good stuff in the lower reaches with a very consensus-y top five

Top 10:
10. Danny Brown
9. Kanye
8. Mitski
7. Angel Olsen
6. Solange
5. Bowie
4. Tribe
3. Chance
2. Frank Ocean
1. Beyonce

(ted gioia is a jazz critic who is very bad at writing about pop. which is fair, I probably would be very bad at writing about jazz, but I don't write dismissive takes about it in salon or wherever)

a self-reinforcing downward spiral of male-centric indie (katherine), Thursday, 1 December 2016 15:45 (nine years ago)

is the frank ocean any good

Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Thursday, 1 December 2016 15:47 (nine years ago)

good question

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 December 2016 15:50 (nine years ago)

that stereogum top 10 is close to what I'm expecting to see from here on out

duped and used by my worst Miss U (President Keyes), Thursday, 1 December 2016 16:04 (nine years ago)

i thought the frank ocean record was terrible tbh. imago might enjoy the sounds on that danny brown though?

Rae Kwoniff (NickB), Thursday, 1 December 2016 16:04 (nine years ago)

The Frank Ocean album is probably the year's biggest grower. It seemed like a self-evident disappointment at first but it really opens up. I ended up listening to it as much as just about anything this year

Norman Records Top 100 is a great list every year.

(top 50 actually)

xp :)

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 1 December 2016 16:19 (nine years ago)

There's an 8-song EP in the Frank album that would be incredible. The first and last songs on the album are very bad.

I know hoes that know Ali Farka Toure (voodoo chili), Thursday, 1 December 2016 16:22 (nine years ago)

xp OK now that's my kinda list

sleeve, Thursday, 1 December 2016 16:22 (nine years ago)

interesting that the katie dey album made stereogum's top 20, it was quite nice but don't expect it will show up anywhere else at all

a fair bit of Blonde grew on me but it still feels too fragmented overall. the highs are great (a solid 8 track EP sounds about right) but a lot of it just doesn't quite work which is really frustrating.

ufo, Thursday, 1 December 2016 16:31 (nine years ago)

lots to dig into on the Norman Records list, just hope it isn't mostly boring piffle

Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Thursday, 1 December 2016 16:32 (nine years ago)

i love the katie dey record

imagine if people gave other records as much of a chance to grow as they give blond/e! must be nice to have a rep as a ~genius~

maura, Thursday, 1 December 2016 16:42 (nine years ago)

I dunno, that's fair, but he took advantage of the benefit of the doubt to make a unique album that most artists couldn't have gotten away with. I can't fault him for that

Evan R, Thursday, 1 December 2016 16:56 (nine years ago)

I realize there's a chance blond/e could grow on me and open up if I spent time with it, but I haven't felt the need or desire to go back to it. *shrug*

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 1 December 2016 17:03 (nine years ago)

I already felt Channel Orange was a bluff so I gave Blond/e very few chances. Love nostalgiaultra.

gospodin simmel, Thursday, 1 December 2016 17:14 (nine years ago)

definitely lots of good stuff on the Norman Records list

Al Moon Faced Poon (Moodles), Thursday, 1 December 2016 17:18 (nine years ago)

good write-ups too

can't say I know half the albums
