patita – thank you on behalf of all of us (for keeping it peel...)

I like the idea that some of these (almost forgotten) recordings are now getting the love they deserve again, beyond the lifetime of their greatest patron. If Peelie had foreseen all of this I'm sure he would have treasured that record box even more.

It is a pity that some of these artists may never see payment for our pleasure, but with rare & unavailable items I think that spreading the word is more important.

Alright - here's a torrent of everything so far, except for 22 odd files that I will put up later.

I must admit I don't know shit about torrents, but this oughta work...

Thank you so much.. unfortunately the torrent and magnet links do not seem to work. I'm getting 'bad torrent' errors. What tracker did you use?

Anyone else able to download this torrent?

haha alex, no danger i think of having this all be too easy..!

From Margrave of the Marshes:

"Despite John's reputation for airing new music, those audiences who clutched him to their collective bosom in the late sixties and early seventies often reacted with depressing hostility and snobbishness whenever he played something other than rock. When John included for the first time in his Radio 1 show a Jamaican record, Andy Capp's "Pop A Top", and an African one, Sipho Bhengu's "Tickey Dopies", he wasn't prepared for such a negative reaction. He had, his core audience claimed, sold out. But to whom, exactly?"

I'll try again on the torrent. I've only done one before, but it worked that time.

D.I.Y. U.N.K.L.E. (dave225.3), Thursday, 24 November 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

It seems the post of "Matthew's Big Zip" gets deleted quite quickly.

The smaller ones from Patita and myself have survived, even now.

Tea Are G, Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

There's an article in this month's "Record Collector" about the box. Each single described and valued.

Mind you it's obvious the writer had no access to the box, as too many have "Unknown" next to label/details/value etc.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 24 November 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

no new songs, just a tidy:
002 Don't Play Blue Eyes
109 Wine Wine Wine
- went back to original show recording and re-transfered / re-encoded, less digital clipping. still not perfect.

075 Get Flat / Flat Out
- split into separate tracks

Hello Everyone,

I have everything except for Matthew/Patita's recent entries. I will leave my Soulseek account on all day today, Thanksgiving Thursday. My user name is koufax.

Should warn that my numbering scheme is slightly different than yours. I have been using the spreadsheet rows from the spreadsheet above to number the files.

Anyone still missing tracks?

Quick message to say I'm running SoulSeek, (file sharing app - really small & easy to set up - google it!), and have all the tracks that have been uploaded so far plus peel on video etc, so if anyone wants to update what they've missed so far get SoulSeek and do a search for 'john peel'. Even users on dial-up should find this ok. My user name DomesticEmpire(ch) - mention this forum and I'll put you to the front of the queue.

Signing off now - see you on slsk (SoulSeek)

Hi

Are we still missing G L Crockett "Did you ever love somebody". The vinyl 45 arrived today. I will put Mp3 on my computer. How do I upload the song please!

Bob

Bob Robinson, Saturday, 26 November 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

Bob: I can't help you precisely, as I've got a different kind of computer setup. Perhaps someone who has riped vinyl to digital format from a Windows machine can post something. I have found this basic guide:
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/01/01/technology/circuits/01basi.html

You'll need some kind of music editing software--does anyone have a recommendation/suggestion?

patita (patita), Saturday, 26 November 2005 23:14 (twenty years ago)

Sound-editing software - I'm not sure if it's the best, but it's both free and very popular:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

It's mentioned in this excellent-looking guide, which gives a great lowdown on doing vinyl -> MP3 transfers. It may be worth paying for some of the other software, though.
http://www.br0wn.co.uk/vinyltocd.htm

Yoz, Sunday, 27 November 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

Here's another much more detailed guide:
http://www.delback.co.uk/lp-cdr.htm

Yoz, Sunday, 27 November 2005 02:03 (twenty years ago)

I agree with yoz in recommending Audacity (Digital Audio Editor) though not regarding commercial software because this will do all you need:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/

..you can't go far wrong. - it's free (open source GNU), really easy to use and does the job well. It's cross-platform so works with pc, linux & mac. You need the lame encoder to be able to produce an mp3:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/faq?s=install&item=lame-mp3

If you prefer I can email you everything you need which can be unzipped and ready to go - doesn't even require installation as it'll run straight from it's folder.

For ripping CD's I recommend Cdex for all the above reasons:
http://www.cdex.n3.net

DomesticEmpire (johnpeeleveryday.blogspot.com), Sunday, 27 November 2005 02:34 (twenty years ago)

er, the question was actually

> How do I upload the song please!

bob, go to yousendit.com. enter details, upload the file, post the returned url here. easy.

and thanks.

can i request another version of Coronation Street - the one we have is just too crackly. i tried tidying it up this afternoon (using audacity) but it's just beyond hope. 8(

argh, that's what I get for reading when tired! sorry all!

patita (patita), Sunday, 27 November 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

Personally I was rather giving the benefit of the doubt as the mechanics of utilising yousendit lie simply in being able to read.

What tracker did you register the torrent with? (ie., what did you put in the 'Announce' field when you were creating the torrent file?) I've tried 4 different BT clients now, and all of them are giving me 'bad tracker' errors.

D.I.Y. U.N.K.L.E. (dave225.3), Monday, 28 November 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

i've just had email from Izzy Royal who says he can (obviously) supply us with a copy of the coronation street thing. isn't the internet great 8)

(failing that, or for those people collecting the set, there's the 7" and 12" available here http://uk.geocities.com/[email protected]/index.htm (6 and 10 quid respectively, plus postage))

no sign of Revelino cd (081) i ordered and no reply to the grumpy email asking where it is. isn't the internet dreadful?

mp3 version of 126_Dead_Leaves (which did arrive safely this morning). replacement for the m4a version that i can't get to work anymore.

http://s52.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2BO4CQX6XM9D21BPM6SX383L7Z

koogs (koogs), Monday, 28 November 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

bit of a roller coaster for you, koogs? Dan Butt and matthew hodge both have the Revelino and offered to share. Sorry you're out the 79p (so far).

patita (patita), Monday, 28 November 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

koogs
- checked out that link for Coronation Street - couldn't see it on their catalogue so I've e-mailed them.

Incidentally, I'd love to know how you got mail from Izzy Royal - as far as I know he is not a real person, just a name used to front the band.

Speaking of unreal people, for those who remember a certain stuttering square headed virtual TV presenter, the Coronation Street single was featured on the Max Headroom show during the eighties...

chris leeds, Monday, 28 November 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

Finally downloading the torrent now. Hooray!

Jimmy Fausto: it's a trackerless torrent, and as I understand it only the Azureus client supports that at the moment. Luckily, there's a version for OS X: http://azureus.sourceforge.net/

You may also need to fiddle with your firewall settings to get it to connect successfully. Email me if you need help.

retort pouch (retort pouch), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 02:35 (twenty years ago)

I just sent both of you guys an email .. I did a nontrackerless (ie tracker) torrent too. I was going to wait to see if you got it to work before posting it here.. But here it is:
http://s48.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1L4L0KIFPP3FZ03XYKTAO78VF4

anyway, glad you got the other one to work .....

D.I.Y. U.N.K.L.E. (dave225.3), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 02:38 (twenty years ago)

D.I.Y. U.N.K.L.E.: You are a golden god! I'm downloading the trackerless torrent just fine now so I'll probably stay on that one, but I did a quick test of the nontrackerless/trackerful torrent you just posted, and everything seems to be in order - I could find a seeder (you, presumably) and data started coming down successfully, so everything should be coo' for folks who don't happen to use Azureus. Thank you!

retort pouch (retort pouch), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 02:53 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for testing that..! Sorry it was such a pain. And thanks to TRG for letting me slsk all of his files to do this.

D.I.Y. U.N.K.L.E. (dave225.3), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 02:59 (twenty years ago)

i too got an e-mail from (someone who pretended to be?) izzy royal via ilxor. it said something about us (ilm) leaving his record coronation street off peel's list and that he/they was proud that the single was in the box. very weird. i don't understand what he/they are talking about. koogs, are you sure that izzy royal is going to offer you the single with the permission to post it here?

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 08:15 (twenty years ago)

> checked out that link for Coronation Street - couldn't see it on their catalogue so I've e-mailed them.

more precisely the 7" is here:
http://uk.geocities.com/[email protected]/prod01.htm and search for 'coronation street'. izzy said he had 'a couple' in his basement, so maybe he'd be willing to sell some on. i'll ask him if he replies to my last email.

> Incidentally, I'd love to know how you got mail from Izzy Royal - as far as I know he is not a real person, just a name used to front the band.

he just emailed me, probably as a result of seeing my post above about wanting a better recording of his single.

his exact words were "I'm going to get one in to a digital format soon and then let's see what we can do about a better quality sound." and that he's hoping for the label to re-release it.

koogs (koogs), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 10:16 (twenty years ago)

RECALL!! RECALL!!

Um, on my playthrough, I've just heared the Idle Race's "Here we go round the Lemon Tree", but I'm certain that's the exact same version as on my old MFP album "Fire Brigade" by the Move.

Are these not different?
