Saying he uses melodies that remind me mainly of 90s grunge
in what way do they remind you of 90s grunge? This should be easy, as 90s grunge had several really distinctive musical qualities that set it apart from the hard rock of the day. I don't hear any of these in the stuff you linked; I do hear, and showed you in easy to understand terms, Beach House and mainstream indie. you don't like the idea of boosting something that reminds you of stuff you'd rather not be culturally aligned with, so you say it doesn't sound like that stuff, but it kinda does. sorry! a lot of the metal I like reminds me of Paganini, even though I do not like Paganini. Those are the breaks!
attempting to argue this on a legit musical basis w/deej w/o ad-homs tho obv we all know how that'll end but w/e

(also for the record actually discussing what's going on is not "dropping musical terms." I know you can't help but think of actual musical discussion that way, but that's on you, not on people who like to talk about music.)

The melodies
He uses
Are often not blues-based
Sounds to me like he does make frequent use chromatic intervals but I haven't rigorously reviewed his work from a musicological perspective so I'm not going to lean on a musicological argument--besides, you asking me to do so is clearly a trap along the lines of when ppl thought I was trying to say keef was being "complex" and therefore good by taking an unorthodox rhythmic approach
All I can say is that the melodic choices he makes remind me of the gloomy depressed trapped feel of stuff like Alice In Chains & similar 90s grunge stars that later went on to influence stuff like staind and puddle of mudd or what have you.
I do think it's funny that an indie rock artist is trying to convince me of the vast influence of indie in the year of our lord 2016 when about 8 people still listen or talk about indie rock
And while I'm not as familiar with his influences in this area, I do know he's sampled multiple emo records, which suggests to me his influences are probably more along those lines than traditional indie as such
How in all these threads where three people (inevitably one of them is always Joan Crawford of the band best coast) pile on me abt the music I like in their most condescending shitthead tones always throw up their hands and accuse me of ad hominem attacks part way through

I should mention that it's not just the melodies but the texture of many of the beats and the sneering smeared singing style that enhances teh grunge aesthetic in my mind

I get that for you this is about cultural positioning ("the thing I like could not sound like the thing I don't want to be seen as liking"), which is not a surprise, but this dude sounds mainly like mainstream indie rock. he does also sound on that second tune like Blink-182

This isn't abt "cultural positioning" I just think you don't actually get what this is or where it's influences are coming from, you think this sounds like "indie" and I think indie rock is probably the ninth most popular form of music having an influence on a nineteen year old kid listening to popular music in 2016 & while there might be some textural or surface level commonalities w the genre it's really not a primary touchpoint for this nor does it really reflect his sensibility or approach--this is very sincere music & he writes lyrical w a brush that feels much more like rap meets emo than something intended to appeal to ppl reading gorilla vs bear or whatever. I do agree to some extent about the blink 182 thing
