this album is really not that good. i was expecting more but all it really is is throwaway pop.
― Bee OK, Thursday, 17 November 2016 01:57 (nine years ago)
I love the second half, particularly "Don't Talk About It" and "Flashes".
― art baengels (monotony), Thursday, 17 November 2016 06:10 (nine years ago)
I never tried "lady wood" though I loved the first album a lot; anybody wanna convince me to try it? the lack of buzz here is not heartening.
spotify's image for her tour is kinda porny and i'm getting the impression that's how she's being marketed/is self marketing now?

well yeah look at the album cover
the album is precisely what i imagined it to be: full of serviceable bops, perhaps less fragile than its predecessor yet no less worthy
― art baengels (monotony), Wednesday, 30 November 2016 02:37 (nine years ago)
i like that song about staying high all the time
― Treeship, Wednesday, 30 November 2016 03:23 (nine years ago)
i made a terrible poll about it
Her voice seems to have lost all its urgency and energy. There's some great songs here - "True Disaster" especially - but her delivery makes everything seem so monochromatic. It made me think of the Liz Phair self-titled album: it's meant to be pop and it's meant to be sexually empowered and feminist, but it doesn't quite come off.
― boxedjoy, Wednesday, 30 November 2016 08:42 (nine years ago)
and I was really sad because the debut was one of my favourites of recent years.
My kids were also sad as they really liked the first album and there's maybe two on this one that they can listen to #pottymouth
― groovypanda, Wednesday, 30 November 2016 11:04 (nine years ago)
I mean, the whole point is that there's no urgency and energy. everything sounds monochromatic because it's portraying everything *feeling* monochromatic, but fortunately the current version of What Max Martin Sounds Like works pretty well alongside that, in a dead-eyed '80s way (there are a lot of similarities, sonically and otherwise, to the weeknd album)
― a self-reinforcing downward spiral of male-centric indie (katherine), Wednesday, 30 November 2016 15:31 (nine years ago)
I totally get what she's going for! And I really respect that, at the point in her career where she could have really blown up, she chose to make this album and send the message it does. But I wish there was a way that the things I like about the first album - eg the desperation of Habits, the blissful cravings in Not On Drugs - could exist within this.

i love this album, it speaks to me
― josh, Thursday, 1 December 2016 20:12 (nine years ago)
tove lo's lyrics are hilarious, she always sounds like she just stepped off the plane from sweden, learned some american slang and wants to awkwardly shoehorn "feels" and "zero fucks" into her lyrics

ok so the comparison to Liz Phair upthread was meant to be a criticism but it's kind of blowing parts of the last album wide open for me
― sick, fucking funny, and well tasty (katherine), Wednesday, 13 September 2017 18:27 (eight years ago)
in what sense?
I don't mean that sarcy, I genuinely want to find a way into liking this more because I think she's a great *star* and I really admire her forthright sexual politics
― boxedjoy, Wednesday, 13 September 2017 20:58 (eight years ago)
this is about 1000 Xs better the second time around.
― Bee OK, Thursday, 14 September 2017 01:15 (eight years ago)
Great dang song - like her generally but this seems especially good

the new album is my favourite of hers, quite comfortably.

really good record
― J0rdan S., Monday, 20 November 2017 23:49 (eight years ago)
The new one meaning the one that came out on Friday? I liked it on one listen but I got the sense that at least some of it was stuff leftover or that didn't make it onto Lady Wood. maybe this is just a misread on my part. will spend more time with it over the next day or two.
― fffv, Tuesday, 21 November 2017 00:00 (eight years ago)
i could do without a few of the tracks but otherwise it is very nice!
― dyl, Friday, 24 November 2017 16:00 (eight years ago)
also since it doesn't seem to have been mentioned in this thread yet i will say that the song she did with flume, "say it", is one of her best (and is way better than the flume track that actually became a hit)
― dyl, Friday, 24 November 2017 16:03 (eight years ago)
Disco Tits is so her best song it's not even funny. i mean jeez..
― piscesx, Wednesday, 6 December 2017 22:57 (eight years ago)
disco tits is so good, def up there with best songs this year
― kolakube (Ross), Wednesday, 27 December 2017 01:10 (eight years ago)
it took me a little bit but disco tits rules, definitely my favourite single from her
― ufo, Wednesday, 27 December 2017 01:35 (eight years ago)
can anyone link me to a quality version of disco tits (just the audio, not the video) for year end mixing purposes...
― kolakube (Ross), Sunday, 31 December 2017 17:22 (eight years ago)
i heard "disco tits" twice on a (dance-formatted) terrestrial station, 'nipples' was backmasked ofc. the first time the dj actually announced it as "disco tits" but i guess that was a no-no b/c the next time they just called it "disco"
― dyl, Sunday, 31 December 2017 21:48 (eight years ago)
Love her newest record, just seems to hit the right buttons
― kolakube (Ross), Saturday, 17 February 2018 15:49 (eight years ago)
Last record is such a weird journey. How many records one two punch like that and go super low key, almost like the intro is a red herring

i love the lyrics but a big fan of the juxtaposition of awkward scando english phrasing and lurid queer slutpositivity in her music. also i first misheard that one line as ‘only one dick that’s obama’ and it still makes me giggle each time
― flopson, Friday, 4 October 2019 01:26 (six years ago)
man…really feelin' "really don't like you"…too bad she (evidently) couldn't afford to do a real video with Kylie…

New song: "Bikini Porn"
I am becoming obsessed with her
― totally unnecessary bewbz of exploitation (DJP), Friday, 17 January 2020 20:54 (six years ago)
I went to see her last night and it was really excellent. I had heard a few things about her voice not being up to task but she sounded absolutely fine to me and the energy was unreal. I also should concede that I was wrong upthread about Lady Wood - it's still my least favourite of her albums but revisiting it and it's not the dud I seemed to think it was.
― boxedjoy, Tuesday, 10 March 2020 13:15 (six years ago)
also the show was sold out and she seems to have a super-loyal fanbase of queer teenagers which, personally avoiding Twitter and Instagram, I had totally missed? I mean "pop music is popular with young people" is hardly a surprise but even at the back of the crowd where we were you could see everyone - and I mean everyone - mouthing along to every single lyric. There were a lot of queer couples being openly affectionate and it was wonderful as a guy in his thirties to see young people being so casual and unashamed about holding hands and kissing their partners, it is so far removed from when I was 18 and I would have been terrified to even hold someone's hand in public. I love that her music and her lyrics have helped carve out this idea of pop music as a safe space.
