this album is really not that good. i was expecting more but all it really is is throwaway pop.

I love the second half, particularly "Don't Talk About It" and "Flashes".

I never tried "lady wood" though I loved the first album a lot; anybody wanna convince me to try it? the lack of buzz here is not heartening.

the album is precisely what i imagined it to be: full of serviceable bops, perhaps less fragile than its predecessor yet no less worthy

Her voice seems to have lost all its urgency and energy. There's some great songs here - "True Disaster" especially - but her delivery makes everything seem so monochromatic. It made me think of the Liz Phair self-titled album: it's meant to be pop and it's meant to be sexually empowered and feminist, but it doesn't quite come off.

and I was really sad because the debut was one of my favourites of recent years.

My kids were also sad as they really liked the first album and there's maybe two on this one that they can listen to #pottymouth

I mean, the whole point is that there's no urgency and energy. everything sounds monochromatic because it's portraying everything *feeling* monochromatic, but fortunately the current version of What Max Martin Sounds Like works pretty well alongside that, in a dead-eyed '80s way (there are a lot of similarities, sonically and otherwise, to the weeknd album)

I totally get what she's going for! And I really respect that, at the point in her career where she could have really blown up, she chose to make this album and send the message it does. But I wish there was a way that the things I like about the first album - eg the desperation of Habits, the blissful cravings in Not On Drugs - could exist within this.

tove lo's lyrics are hilarious, she always sounds like she just stepped off the plane from sweden, learned some american slang and wants to awkwardly shoehorn "feels" and "zero fucks" into her lyrics

I don't mean that sarcy, I genuinely want to find a way into liking this more because I think she's a great *star* and I really admire her forthright sexual politics

The new one meaning the one that came out on Friday? I liked it on one listen but I got the sense that at least some of it was stuff leftover or that didn't make it onto Lady Wood. maybe this is just a misread on my part. will spend more time with it over the next day or two.

i could do without a few of the tracks but otherwise it is very nice!

also since it doesn't seem to have been mentioned in this thread yet i will say that the song she did with flume, "say it", is one of her best (and is way better than the flume track that actually became a hit)

i love the lyrics but a big fan of the juxtaposition of awkward scando english phrasing and lurid queer slutpositivity in her music. also i first misheard that one line as ‘only one dick that’s obama’ and it still makes me giggle each time

I am becoming obsessed with her

I went to see her last night and it was really excellent. I had heard a few things about her voice not being up to task but she sounded absolutely fine to me and the energy was unreal. I also should concede that I was wrong upthread about Lady Wood - it's still my least favourite of her albums but revisiting it and it's not the dud I seemed to think it was.

also the show was sold out and she seems to have a super-loyal fanbase of queer teenagers which, personally avoiding Twitter and Instagram, I had totally missed? I mean "pop music is popular with young people" is hardly a surprise but even at the back of the crowd where we were you could see everyone - and I mean everyone - mouthing along to every single lyric. There were a lot of queer couples being openly affectionate and it was wonderful as a guy in his thirties to see young people being so casual and unashamed about holding hands and kissing their partners, it is so far removed from when I was 18 and I would have been terrified to even hold someone's hand in public. I love that her music and her lyrics have helped carve out this idea of pop music as a safe space.
