B-b-but Nicole! "My Way", "U Make Me Wanna", "Nice And Slow", "U Don't Have To Call", "U Remind Me"! (See, Usher remembers Prince, too!)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 13:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Initially, I thought you were comparing Justin to Christ, Dan.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 13:32 (twenty-three years ago)

DanandNed are just confirming their rep as interweb mentalists.

No, we're merely straightforward about what we will and will not have in the house (this is why we're right about My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult).

But you know, he ain't that bad people!

I'm happy you're happy.

"Cry Me a River" as a sign of JT's psychological torment -- more like the random high school post-bust-up victim who just needs to drink some lime vodka and throw up behind the bleachers one night when the football team is losing badly and it's raining so that next week he can go to class and see her there and maybe carve something into the desktop with the pointy part of a compass but that'll be about it.

As for the Usher conundrum, he immediately scores points with me for NOT being JT, so really it all improves from there.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 13:32 (twenty-three years ago)

"Hey! Do you remember Mary Magdalene? Justin does! AND HE'S GOING TO GET THAT BITCH."

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 13:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I, for one, will happily nail him up somewhere, say outside the TRL studios, under a sign saying "Justin, King of the Feebs."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 13:33 (twenty-three years ago)

JT obviously strikes some bizarre psychological nerve for you two... in Ned's case it seems to be more personal, perhaps harking back to painful high school experiences, in Dan's case it's a combination of being more knowledgeable than most about vocal technique and pique that JT has muscled in on the wannabe-MJ territory previously owned by Usher...

;o)

Ben Williams, Wednesday, 23 April 2003 13:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Who cares anyway, he was in NSYNC. Piss off.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 13:37 (twenty-three years ago)

< /ObnoxiousRockism>

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 13:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry, forgot that!

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 13:40 (twenty-three years ago)

JT obviously strikes some bizarre psychological nerve for you two...

Hey, that experience wasn't mine. Wisely, I just didn't date anyone in high school at all. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 13:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, Ned can get angreeee! I knew you had it in you, buddy.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 13:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't really think that's how it comes across within the song's constructs at all.

maybe you're right, its probably his wry smile in the video that got me...i've never really quite understood the video to be honest. i've never paid enough attention but it seems that Justin has quickly realised what he's done and Tim is just the little devil on his shoulder smug that his meddling work is done. probably not really the case at all...

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 13:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, Ned can get angreeee! I knew you had it in you, buddy.

Exceptions to the rule. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 14:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I was hoping this thread would be about how great Justin was, you've all ruined my day and I hate you.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Yr great though, cheer up

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

He is still great Ronan! Don't let the hatas get you down!

One day I will have to expand on my thesis on how he is the ultimate Sanrio character.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Can today be that day?

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 14:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Perhaps.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 14:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Gee that'll change some minds

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 14:34 (twenty-three years ago)

It will, I know this because Ned is a closet Spottie Dottie fan. If I could only school him in the connection between the two, all of the hostility would fade away like a bad dye job.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

If I told you it was Secretary's Day and I am a Secretary and should be showered with gifts like Sanrio Timberlake thesises, would it sway your "Perhaps" to a "Definitely"?

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

justin timberlake = complete guilty pleasure for me. The album (minus a few tracks) is fantastic. I especially like the slick not-slick production and the vocal nods to Michael Jackson.

disco stu (disco stu), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 14:58 (twenty-three years ago)

It will, I know this because Ned is a closet Spottie Dottie fan.

If I knew which character this was I'm sure this could be confirmed or denied.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 15:13 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a Dalmatian that likes lipstick and tea parties and other girly nonsense.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 15:14 (twenty-three years ago)

How in the world is JT even slightly comparable to that obvious brilliance? If anything it sounds like the musical equivalent would be Brian Molko. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a girl Dalmatian though! I pick up more of an xtina vibe off of Dottie.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a girl Dalmatian though!

Dammit, how boring! J-pop has enough fashion styled guys with lipstick in it, why the hell isn't Sanrio following this trend!

I pick up more of an xtina vibe off of Dottie.

So I'm trying to imagine a Sanrio character writhing around a wrestling ring...EURGH. Otaku perversion!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 15:27 (twenty-three years ago)

i was well against him at the start, but cry me a river won me over...
the video is great as well...as for the arguement about whether someone else could have done the same with the same songs,eg usher,i was going to say not at all,i'd never like usher, but i suppose i would have said the same about timberlake a while ago...

i think cry me a river is one of the best timbaland productions
does anyone know what the male vocal sample at the start is?

the prince/michael jackson comparisons are spot on,but i don't think its in a "hey,remember..."/rip off kind of way,so much as a "there used to be these all encompassing pop stars, now there aren't,why not?" kind of way

so what should i download next?
i've only heard the singles...

robin (robin), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 15:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Aw. :-) No, not drug infested enough to be Molko and certainly easier to look at than JT.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 15:38 (twenty-three years ago)

so what should i download next?

Last Night

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 15:43 (twenty-three years ago)

It's funny. Justin's voice never bothered me in the context of N'Sync (esp. on songs like "Pop" and "Gone"), but I think the Jerry Lewis/Steve Urkel quality of his voice ("laaady!") comes out when the beats move further away from trashy kiddie-pop to straight-up Usherland material. On "Senorita," "Like I Love You" and "Cry Me A River" the way the material and his voice connect is so fascinating I don't mind the fact that he sounds like a desperate wanna-be, but most of the material on Justified grates with me. I think part of it has to do with the insipidness of the lyrics ("I wanna be the wind so I can blow your mind..." yeeesh! "Bet I have you naked by the end of this song" don't count on it!) and his not-always-cute determination to sound like King Stud. If you're the kind of person who has to be reminded to listen to the singer, you'll be pleased with the intriguing beats and all that (even if the Neptunes tracks feel like hi-fi Ween genre exercises half the time). But I was WAY disappointed by this album.

Plus he's acting and looking like THIS guy, whom none of us claimed to be impressed by.

Anthony I kiss you.

A friend of mine was working at Sony when Jon B surfaced and was supposed to be the thing. Uh, no.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

_Justified_ would be fantastic if all the songs on it were sung by Thom Yorke.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Thom Yorke going "Drums" = head explodes.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 16:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Thom Yorke =

Just somethin' about you
Way I'm lookin at you whatever
keep lookin at me
Gettin' scared now, right?
Don't fear me baby, it's just Thom
It feel good right?
Listen

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 16:42 (twenty-three years ago)

_Justified_ would be fantastic if all the songs on it were sung by Thom Yorke.
I just laughed so loud it sounded something more like an anguished scream.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, there was that Radiohead boy band album, I'm sure there's a Thomasized in the works.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Justified would be fantastic is all the songs were sung by Usher, as it is I have a feeling it's fantastic anyway (ALL the singles are so far - it's like Thriller or Faith)(and it's a shame cuz the guy IS a kiss-and-tell asshole and is a meh enough singer to make you dream of MJ or even Usher singing on this instead).

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

THANK YOU JAMES (although I do think "Like I Love You" has some production problems with the reverb on the drums). It's not the songs I object to, IT'S THE SINGER.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 17:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, but it's like better than Thriller, though, really.

the jel (the jel), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 17:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the album might have had the potential to be better than _Thriller_ if the singing wasn't completely loathsome and wrong.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 17:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a lot of the same criticisms of JT as James does, but that doesn't get in the way of me enjoying the album.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 17:18 (twenty-three years ago)

THOM YORKE!

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 17:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't mind JT as a pop star. Added to the flawless singles, mesmerizing production, he also seems like a fun interview. You can't claim he's a totally maunfactured, faceless pop star because his performances (Michael Jacksonisms) communicate the fact that he's a genuine music fan.

theodre fogelsanger, Wednesday, 23 April 2003 18:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Some singers can get swathed enough in a record that if they're bleah enough one can still enjoy (this is what I kept telling myself when I was listening to the Mission a lot). JT does not have this advantage.

he's a genuine music fan

Argh. I would hate him still if he came up to me and said "I listen to music even in my sleep thanks to electrodes."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 18:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Thom Yorke - *groan*. I guess it would be more interesting than Hail to the Thief which I turned off halfway through because it was putting me to sleep...

disco stu (disco stu), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 18:13 (twenty-three years ago)

You people need to get with the program. "Last Night" was the best song of 2002.

ryan, Wednesday, 23 April 2003 18:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Argh, please tell me you aren't talking about that plodfest-on-speed by The Strokes...

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 18:22 (twenty-three years ago)

haha, good lord no!
