I love both Funkadelic and Free Your Mind...and Your Ass Will Follow, and they both definitely deserve to be here. I'd personally rank Cosmic Slop and Motor Booty Affair above 'em, though.

I'm hoping for Standing on the Verge of Getting It On placing the highest out of all the Funkadelic records, and Funkentelechy vs. The Placebo Syndrome of the Parliament ones. It'll probably be Maggot Brain and Mothership Connection, though.

I'm not a huge P-Funk fan, more of a respect for them than anything else, but is every fucking album going to place? What a myopic view of 70s soul/funk music.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 20 October 2016 12:16 (nine years ago)

...and it took 3 days before it happened. Surprised it took so long.

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 20 October 2016 12:23 (nine years ago)

Look man, I'm not picking a fight with you. I don't know how many of their albums you put on your ballot, but I knew from the moment we opened the scope of the poll up (first to P-Funk and then all funk and disco in general) that it was going to swerve headlong into boring ILM canon shit.

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 20 October 2016 12:27 (nine years ago)

save us ArchCarrier!

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 20 October 2016 12:28 (nine years ago)

Yeah, it is disappointing seeing so much of it place when so many other great albums will miss out. I am a big P Funk fan but some of these albums really don't need to be here. I should save my P Funk complaints for when Maggot Brain places in the top five.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 20 October 2016 13:12 (nine years ago)

That Chi-Lites album is special. It's truly soulful. Not in a generic "gritty vocals, prominent brass" way but in that every song has these weird little personal touches in both the arrangements and the lyrics. And the vocals! Top 10 album.

JF otm about P-Funk.

simmel, Thursday, 20 October 2016 13:14 (nine years ago)

This Chi-Lites album was one of the last albums I cut from my ballot. Such a great record.

Surprised to see we haven't had any Al Green up until now. All n All is my favourite from The Belle Album. That bassline is amazing. Wonder how many others of his will place. I'm guessing Call Me, Let's Stay Together and I'm Still In Love With You will definitely make it. There could be others.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 20 October 2016 13:16 (nine years ago)

I agree, I've never cared too much for these two bands, so it's boring to see all their albums place in every poll where it was possible to nominate them.

Tuomas, Thursday, 20 October 2016 13:16 (nine years ago)

Tuomas, Thursday, 20 October 2016 13:16 (nine years ago)

My 2 cents on Funkadelic I didn't vote for already offered, but debut and Free Your Mind are both great, and I don't care if they're boring canon. They're still straight bourbon in a sea of stale merlot to me.

Dominique, Thursday, 20 October 2016 13:35 (nine years ago)

If it had been a soul only poll I could understand the complaints but ArchCarrier said he wanted a soul/funk/disco poll.

If he had said soul only I would have been fine with that, but since funk was allowed, I voted for a lot of funk as well.

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 20 October 2016 13:48 (nine years ago)

It's inevitable that canon stuff will get some hate. I don't love Curtis or Clinton as much as y'all but it's probably hypocritical to talk shit since I voted for three Spinners and three Pendergrass albums. Still, I didn't vote for ten Spinners albums.

simmel, Thursday, 20 October 2016 13:53 (nine years ago)

I took my daughter to the zoo, but now I'm back!

I allowed funk because there were already so many funk albums in the nominations list, and it would have been far too much work to separate them from the rest.

Album highlight: 'Dove'

ArchCarrier, Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:28 (nine years ago)

This one would've won my cover art poll. A fantastic album too

With 30 points max per album and 2 major funk fans in the house you might be able to deduce that the big funk wave is behind us, and we can all enjoy the fantastic soul that's still going to place.

ArchCarrier, Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:36 (nine years ago)

For example...

56. Lee Dorsey - Yes We Can (1970)
62 points • 3 votes

ArchCarrier, Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:37 (nine years ago)

Voted for both of these. Yes We Can is the best New Orleans album imo. I don't even mind the goofball humour since Dorsey is so charismatic and the groove never lets up. Cymande is in that intriguing spot along with King Sunny Ade of nonshallow, nonsentimental background music. Truly rare.

simmel, Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:46 (nine years ago)

Cymande and Lee Dorsey are both wonderful albums that didn't make my list.

I don't have a problem with all the funk placing, it's the just the amount of P Funk in particular that will take the place of other great albums that would add a bit more variety. I say that as a big P Funk fan. I'm still really enjoying the countdown. So many brilliant albums and my top three are still to come.

I'm not a massive fan of Black Moses. Hoping that To Be Continued might sneak in here somewhere.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:57 (nine years ago)

Yes We Can is pretty much one of the best songs ever, I first discovered in on that great Saturday Night Fish Fry comp that Soul Jazz put out, that thing was a big gateway drug for me

This was my number two. When I first got into her I much preferred Perfect Angel and Come to my Garden which were much more instant. Over time this has become my favourite and one of my very favourite albums of all time. Such a stunning record by an incredible talent. Happy to see it do so well.

the entire Rock Your Baby album is very good. the title track was written and produced by harry wayne casey (of kc and the sunshine band)

xp was pedentically annoyed to hear that title track in the 1977 episode of The Get Down

jeez I can't spell or type today, sorry

sleeve, Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:33 (nine years ago)

Rock your baby must have sold heaps because along with all the Diana Ross records and the best of the stylistics, it's one that you can always find in uk charity shops ime. Despite that I've never got round to picking it up.

Rae Kwoniff (NickB), Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:34 (nine years ago)

"Adventures in Paradise" was my #1. A great performer and songwriter at the top of her game, and unlike on the previous album, she has the sort of intricate, high class backing tracks that best suit her. It's about as far away from "gritty" and other clichés of 70s soul as you can get, and that's awesome, because Minnie Riperton is in a class of her own.

"Love and Its Glory" is the first thing I'd recommend listening from that album, it's one of the most ridiculously jubilant and awesomely melodramatic things ever recorded.

Tuomas, Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:38 (nine years ago)

Very well. I'm ilstening to Adventure sin Paradise now.

51. Isaac Hayes - ...To Be Continued (1970)

ArchCarrier, Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:41 (nine years ago)

Isaac and Minnie are sort of prog rock analogues in soul. Really hard for me to access their particular aesthetic.

simmel, Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:48 (nine years ago)

tbh I find Isaac Hayes albums to be really erratic/unfocused (with a couple of notable exceptions). Honestly the stuff I like best of his are live things - the 18-minute version of "Ain't No Sunshine" etc.

xp Hot Buttered Soul is pretty classic, but of course that one came out in 1969. I would've voted for it very highly.

No matter how inconsistent, all Isaac Hayes 70s albums are good for a game of "Spot the Sample"

I know hoes that know Ali Farka Toure (voodoo chili), Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:59 (nine years ago)

Hot Buttered Soul is def his best front-to-back album, yeah
