2016 def the first year where memes have played a role in political campaigns

All those Obama-is-really-Kenyan-here's-the-proof pics that made the rounds in 2008 weren't memes?

Needs Boris Johnson.
― chap, Thursday, 13 October 2016 10:58 (nine years ago)
they're memes in the sense they're images overlaid with text which are shared online but i guess i think of 4chan-derived memes as a different animal altogether - images which involve weird, sometimes wilfully offensive humour which mutate as they're passed around and often end up with an entirely different meaning over time
― doo-doo diplomacy (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 13 October 2016 11:55 (nine years ago)
also the kenyan-birth memes don't involve a fictional character in the same way that, say, pepe the frog or harambe memes do
― doo-doo diplomacy (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 13 October 2016 11:57 (nine years ago)
Harambe was real to me ;_;
― Neil S, Thursday, 13 October 2016 12:01 (nine years ago)
harambe is realer now as a meme than he ever was as a gorilla

Not sure if this has been discussed before... Have we touched on this hot little number? The song was first recorded by the band Climax in 1973,[1] but it failed to chart. It was then covered by The Righteous Brothers in 1974 and reached number three on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.[2][3]

Also, in 1981, when the Righteous Brothers appeared for a one song reunion on American Bandstand, they performed "Rock and Roll Heaven", and made it longer including new lyrics as tributes to Elvis Presley, John Lennon, and Keith Moon.

The Led Zeppelin managed by Pierre Menard is greater than the one managed by Peter Grant, as it must navigate an musical landscape where album sales are diminished, guitar is no longer the prestige instrument, and one of its members is dead.

The three men depict Marlon Brando from The Wild One, a portrayal of Jesus in academic dress, and Cesar Romero as The Cisco Kid.[5]

I thought "Elvis" at first look, but I definitely see the Marlon once it was pointed out.
