they're memes in the sense they're images overlaid with text which are shared online but i guess i think of 4chan-derived memes as a different animal altogether - images which involve weird, sometimes wilfully offensive humour which mutate as they're passed around and often end up with an entirely different meaning over time

also the kenyan-birth memes don't involve a fictional character in the same way that, say, pepe the frog or harambe memes do
