pretty cool place.

the soundsystem is incredible - genuinely gets you thinking of a list of albums or tracks you'd like to hear on it. they played a decent amount of jazz and i can safely say i've never heard a system sound so amazing.

this in particular was like more sensory than music usually is (should stress i had nothing stronger than a few beers)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNsiP8dZYg8

the food is pretty nice - the whole place is kind of geared towards table service and sitting down, there's no dancefloor. like a sort of ex-ravers old folks home. expensive though. it feels a bit grim that wanting to hear good music on a nice soundsystem ends up being tied to a sort of yuppy experience. not that there's a bad attitude there or anything, but like a 2/3 glass of beer is six quid.

overall though the music sounds so incredible that i will definitely be going back, it was a really nice place to sit and chat. aficionado seem to be doing a residency there.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Monday, 31 October 2016 11:38 (nine years ago)

article in the ny times today on spiritland/brilliant corners/lucky cloud: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/31/arts/music/london-listening-clubs-spiritland.html

just spiritland for me from the list of stuff they talk about. i've been to those lucky cloud nights and the music was shit imo - djs not mixing things like kerri chandler or eventually hardfloor, had the feeling of a dj that hadn't played in years and was not mixing due to it being a pain, rather than for eclecticism. my friends like brilliant corners a lot but i find it crowded and mostly unpleasant. the idea of classic album sundays isn't really for me.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Monday, 31 October 2016 11:42 (nine years ago)

not that there's a bad attitude there or anything, but like a 2/3 glass of beer is six quid

Argh seriously? It sounded pretty much perfect up to that point.

Matt DC, Monday, 31 October 2016 11:45 (nine years ago)

Like, how loud is the music? Gearing a place around table service/food/conversation seems to conflict with the idea of the speakers taking central stage, but this might be a failure of my imagination here because most places with both loud music and food tend to be dreadful.

Matt DC, Monday, 31 October 2016 11:50 (nine years ago)

The audience sat in rapt silence for New Order’s 1983 record “Power, Corruption & Lies,” taking in every detail of the sparkling electro-pop riffs, soaring vocals and bouncy polyrhythmic beats.

ah yes, the famously soaring voice of bernard sumner

did you see the fantastic RA article on audiophile café's in tokyo? some of those places look so beautiful:
https://www.residentadvisor.net/features/2724

Rae Kwoniff (NickB), Monday, 31 October 2016 12:48 (nine years ago)

the speakers are so good that you can have a conversation fairly easily even sat close to them, but you don't necessarily need to sit really near them if you don't want to.

i wouldn't go for like a meal out in the same way you go to a restaurant, but i can really easily imagine say going after work or on a sunday, having a few beers and then some food as a follow-up. the food is like good salt beef sandwiches, grilled cheese, with a little bit more imagination than that as well, i was sat at the bar for a bit waiting for my friend and watching the chefs and it all looked really nice, just had a grilled cheese myself later and it was good.

i think like probably wine or cocktails might be the way to go if you're drinking there. it's indeed grim that you can't even get a pint, a light glass in my hand that costs six quid is a recipe for a big bill.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Monday, 31 October 2016 13:13 (nine years ago)

i guess the bottom line is that it is cool that someone has actually opened a new dj-centric venue with a great soundsystem tho. it felt nice and retro to be heading towards a more central part of london to go and hear music.

New Psychemagik comp will cost you £75 on vinyl for the three separate editions but £12 on triple CD for 40 songs and over 3 hours of music is an absolute steal.

This album got a lot of love on the TP list - it might be a tad new-new-agey for me but a good listen: https://www.discogs.com/The-Swan-The-Lake-Moments/release/9320477

Then I read someone point out that the album cover is an homage to another new-age album: https://www.discogs.com/Software-Digital-Dance/master/51415

The old one is more digital but the vibes are similar.

in re: discussion of Spiritland somewhere upthread, what do you actually do at these listening club venues? Bring in a book, sit at the counter? Have drinks with your friends? Sit alone quietly enraptured? Having a hard time with the concept still...

Daniel_Rf, Monday, 19 December 2016 10:13 (nine years ago)

sit and chat and have drinks. but i never went to the classic album things at spiritland, it was just a bar with a dj as far as i'm concerned. often the music is a point of conversation just because the soundsystem is so amazing.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Monday, 19 December 2016 10:37 (nine years ago)

Agree with that. I've been there on a Sunday afternoon when there have been people sitting alone on laptops at the bar area near the entrance. The staff are really good as well.

Nice to see the Bendith record get a mention

groovypanda, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 22:54 (nine years ago)

Jeez I'm gonna be pouring over both those testpressing lists for days

a but (brimstead), Thursday, 22 December 2016 01:43 (nine years ago)

Bendith ended up on two lists. Pretty odd!

If you're looking for balearic, you might not want to listen to it. It's a nice little Welsh folk record.

afriendlypioneer, Thursday, 22 December 2016 15:37 (nine years ago)

Yeah, it's a collaboration between Colorama (guys behind the awesome 'Hapus?') and Plu.

Moon has been repping for it quite a bit.

These two tracks are lovely:

groovypanda, Friday, 23 December 2016 22:30 (nine years ago)

Yeah that was in that last Moonboots mix - really lovely track. I was wondering in the discussion upthread if it was the same artist, even though I'd seen him say that track was coming out on Aficionado.

If you're looking for balearic, you might not want to listen to it. It's a nice little Welsh folk record.

feel like this kind of thing is always included in balearic mixes.

Jose Padilla is live on Boiler Room right now with Young Marco and Daniele Baldelli due to follow, Padilla is playing less chilled than I expected but it is so good

Finally listening to Ritual Chants... the "beach" disc is pretty terrible. That stuff should have stayed in the crate. "Dance" is better so far but still a bit too out there for me.
