There's also a lot of vote splitting there, there's a pretty clear consensus of what the best trad doom/stoner, screamo and drone metal albums are, much less so with DM.

― Siegbran, Saturday, 17 September 2016 13:56 (three minutes ago)

That is probably true because there seems to be so much more death metal around than most of the other subgenres. It's much more established than BM or Doom really in the more mainstream market of metal.
I've seen so many people posting on the internet asking what doom metal is , so it's popularity on ilm is peculiar i think. But even then , it only takes 20 people to place something at #2.

If death metal fans such as phil etc aren't voting because they dont like me I'd happily let someone else takeover the EOY poll so they will participate.

Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 17 September 2016 13:04 (seven years ago) link

Siegbran did you discover anything new via the poll?

Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 17 September 2016 13:16 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, 40 Watt Sun - I know Warning but this is really a big step up.

Siegbran, Saturday, 17 September 2016 15:27 (seven years ago) link

You think it's even better?

Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 17 September 2016 16:24 (seven years ago) link

The Nokturnal Mortum album is pretty interesting. I dig the eclecticism, and it's got a nice flow.

jmm, Saturday, 17 September 2016 17:06 (seven years ago) link

Now go vote in Dedication to Polls and Voters: Notated Music Since 1890 - Voting and Discussion Thread

Ordo Ad Chao is pretty great yeah

imago, Sunday, 18 September 2016 19:50 (seven years ago) link

Nokturnal Mortum made some good music, it's a shame they turned out to be a bunch of Nazis. This song always got me pumped up for the battles of life.

larry appleton, Sunday, 18 September 2016 19:58 (seven years ago) link

I preferred it when the far right made shit music. (musical) life was far easier.

Always found it lols that they latched onto Ska of all things.

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 18 September 2016 23:08 (seven years ago) link

Once the shock of the new wore off I realised I might have wanted to like him [Jute Gyte] more than I actually did...

Despite owning loads of the CD's I cant help but feel the same way

Jute Gyte I appreciate for the out-there-ness, I guess I just wished he rocked more?

It's not really about the novelty for me. Although some of the initial draw was intellectual (the microtones, the asymmetric metres, the convoluted forms), the visceral impact is what keeps me listening. It can just feel diseased, eerie, and psychedelic in a unique and intense way. Even the weirdly airless production is part of this. I'll agree that it doesn't rock like Nachtmystium rock; more like the chained-in-the-attic bastard offspring of early Sonic Youth.

Hi! I'm twice-coloured! (Sund4r), Monday, 19 September 2016 02:44 (seven years ago) link

Having a listen to some of the albums that I missed, which includes the winner. It sounds quite a lot like the Sisters of Mercy, doesn't it. More challenging opinions as I have them.

Yeah, the devil really does have the best tunes. Anyway I'm happy to see some people discover the record through this poll, even though it ended up at a lowly #229.

Siegbran, Monday, 19 September 2016 16:08 (seven years ago) link

Fascist or not, that's some hilariously weak and cheesy Eurometal piss. Also, I don't think a "reformed" band would do a split with Graveland this very year fwiw.

great stuff, will check out the ones I haven't heard. jmm has unfortunately chosen the most Eurovision song on the Nokturnal Mortum album (and my least favourite) - try the title track and Valkyrie instead

I saw Shipping Is Discreet and Fast opening for Dimmu Borgir in '99. They were kind of bland, but their shipping was both discreet and fast.

Tom Violence, Monday, 19 September 2016 21:15 (seven years ago) link

It sounds quite a lot like the Sisters of Mercy, doesn't it.

I was trying to identify which goth rock band it reminded me of. It does sound better than I initially gave credit for tbf.
