This album is such a wet blanket

I'm liking it a lot, even the 2 Chainz bit, but not David Byrne's awful appearance.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 26 August 2016 20:47 (nine years ago)

maybe save it for wintertime xp

Spottie, Friday, 26 August 2016 21:14 (nine years ago)

The De La Soul is Not Dead: documentray trailer was uploaded to youtube, yesterday.

PappaWheelie V, Tuesday, 30 August 2016 13:47 (nine years ago)

oh damn it's released already?

frogbs, Tuesday, 30 August 2016 13:50 (nine years ago)

xxp yeah I listened to it again with different expectations and didn't hate it as much. I'm still interested in catching up Pos & Dave after all these and hearing what they have to say, but these accompaniments are so low energy, and the guests are so shoehorned in, and the whole thing feels like it's pandering to toothless AAA stations that consider 70 soul revival acts hip and edgy. It's just such an old man record I can't quite get over it.

Evan R, Tuesday, 30 August 2016 14:10 (nine years ago)

it's so old man i really tried to get into it . like even the metaphors in the raps are some super outdated references it's embarrassing .

(•̪●) (carne asada), Tuesday, 30 August 2016 14:41 (nine years ago)

this sucked imo

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 30 August 2016 17:56 (nine years ago)

My enthusiasm's waning. I like the sound, but I wanted the songs to be as alive as that sleeve. The Justin Hawkins track is awful, the most turgid thing they've ever recorded, the Byrne song is almost as terrible, and the Estelle and Little Dragon appearances are eh. I still love "Greyhounds," "Royals," Here in After," and "Pain."

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 30 August 2016 18:01 (nine years ago)

yeah those are the best tracks for sure.

Watched this doc thursday night. Prince Paul's revealing interview about his departure and thoughts on Stakes is High was the highlight for me

PappaWheelie V, Saturday, 10 September 2016 12:58 (nine years ago)

interesting to me that they didn't acknowledge the AOI albums or Grind Date in the doc at all
need to give the new album more than two listens

thrusted pelvis-first back (ulysses), Sunday, 11 September 2016 15:52 (nine years ago)

I'm also baffled why the doc stops at Stakes and skips to the new album -- and no mention of Pos's spinal meningitis in 1994, which seems as integral to group's story as Ralf Hutter's cycling accident to Kraftwerk's

PappaWheelie V, Monday, 12 September 2016 13:56 (nine years ago)

The beginning of this album is something of a slog but by the time I hit around track 4-5 I'm in heaven

Don't boo, vote (DJP), Monday, 12 September 2016 14:20 (nine years ago)

their Judgment Night song w/Teenage Fanclub "Fallin" really holds up a lot better than everything else on that album, amazingly somehow they actually hit on something that reflected the strengths of both groups

^^ this (and thanks for the welcome back, shakedown)

two weeks pass...

Yikes what a dull performance. And Estelle sounds horrible. Why does Estelle sound horrible?

Evan R, Wednesday, 28 September 2016 16:34 (nine years ago)

Oh wow she does sound really bad there. that was really boring yea, poor song choice

Spottie, Wednesday, 28 September 2016 18:23 (nine years ago)

Yay!

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 5 September 2018 14:03 (seven years ago)

is there any more seminal/canonical band whose catalog was so royally fucked up/made unavailable by the record industry and its legal pitfalls?

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 5 September 2018 15:56 (seven years ago)

possibly why the band gave their albums away digitally a few years ago.

mark e, Wednesday, 5 September 2018 16:25 (seven years ago)

oh that's definitely why they did it

I'm just struggling to think of another act that released such hugely influential and popular records, that subsequently had their work disappear from circulation for extended periods of time for legal reasons.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 5 September 2018 16:29 (seven years ago)

It is weird that their albums disappeared while Paul's Boutique has never gone out of print.

grawlix (unperson), Wednesday, 5 September 2018 16:32 (seven years ago)

`cism

outside, you're never alone. (Austin), Wednesday, 5 September 2018 16:40 (seven years ago)

I don't think so, it has to do with who filed lawsuits against who. That the Beatles didn't sue might have something to do with the fact that the Beasties were on Capitol... De La happened to get sued by a couple people that were incredibly aggressive legally (ie, the Turtles and Armen Boladian)

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 5 September 2018 16:45 (seven years ago)

So many shitty things about music can be blamed on the Turtles.

grawlix (unperson), Wednesday, 5 September 2018 16:47 (seven years ago)

eh good outweighs the bad imo

I've never cared for Zappa. the Turtles records + T. Rex + their backing vocals on all sorts of stuff (the Psychedelic Furs!) make them forever classic imo

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 5 September 2018 16:50 (seven years ago)

yeah, lawsuits aside, those records almost certainly went out of print after Tommy Boy left Warner. I'd be surprised if Three Feet and Is Dead turn up on Bandcamp.

▫◌▫ (sic), Wednesday, 5 September 2018 22:45 (seven years ago)

right, but I would guess that Tommy Boy didn't re-issue or license them to others for re-issue because of the legal settlements (having to pay Armen Boladian $0.01 on every copy sold or whatever it was)

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 5 September 2018 22:50 (seven years ago)

tried to buy buhloone on bandcamp, but there is some error going on. anyone have better luck?

guardians of the gums: i am tooth (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 5 September 2018 23:25 (seven years ago)

I think Warner still held the catalogue actually! and while they could afford to pay a weird publishing split and an onerous mechanical here and there, once Tom himself was gone, there was no longer a perceived A&R value to making a lower amount on any one sale because the artist was out there promoting the overall oeuvre

▫◌▫ (sic), Thursday, 6 September 2018 07:36 (seven years ago)

yeah that makes sense

Οὖτις, Thursday, 6 September 2018 16:23 (seven years ago)

three months pass...

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 19 December 2018 16:13 (seven years ago)

sometimes I think it's their best album - not as left-field startling as the debut, but more concise, no filler
