xxp yeah I listened to it again with different expectations and didn't hate it as much. I'm still interested in catching up Pos & Dave after all these and hearing what they have to say, but these accompaniments are so low energy, and the guests are so shoehorned in, and the whole thing feels like it's pandering to toothless AAA stations that consider 70 soul revival acts hip and edgy. It's just such an old man record I can't quite get over it.

My enthusiasm's waning. I like the sound, but I wanted the songs to be as alive as that sleeve. The Justin Hawkins track is awful, the most turgid thing they've ever recorded, the Byrne song is almost as terrible, and the Estelle and Little Dragon appearances are eh. I still love "Greyhounds," "Royals," Here in After," and "Pain."

Watched this doc thursday night. Prince Paul's revealing interview about his departure and thoughts on Stakes is High was the highlight for me

interesting to me that they didn't acknowledge the AOI albums or Grind Date in the doc at all
need to give the new album more than two listens

I'm also baffled why the doc stops at Stakes and skips to the new album -- and no mention of Pos's spinal meningitis in 1994, which seems as integral to group's story as Ralf Hutter's cycling accident to Kraftwerk's

The beginning of this album is something of a slog but by the time I hit around track 4-5 I'm in heaven

their Judgment Night song w/Teenage Fanclub "Fallin" really holds up a lot better than everything else on that album, amazingly somehow they actually hit on something that reflected the strengths of both groups

I don't think so, it has to do with who filed lawsuits against who. That the Beatles didn't sue might have something to do with the fact that the Beasties were on Capitol... De La happened to get sued by a couple people that were incredibly aggressive legally (ie, the Turtles and Armen Boladian)

So many shitty things about music can be blamed on the Turtles.

I've never cared for Zappa. the Turtles records + T. Rex + their backing vocals on all sorts of stuff (the Psychedelic Furs!) make them forever classic imo

yeah, lawsuits aside, those records almost certainly went out of print after Tommy Boy left Warner. I'd be surprised if Three Feet and Is Dead turn up on Bandcamp.

right, but I would guess that Tommy Boy didn't re-issue or license them to others for re-issue because of the legal settlements (having to pay Armen Boladian $0.01 on every copy sold or whatever it was)

I think Warner still held the catalogue actually! and while they could afford to pay a weird publishing split and an onerous mechanical here and there, once Tom himself was gone, there was no longer a perceived A&R value to making a lower amount on any one sale because the artist was out there promoting the overall oeuvre
