like i don't think the process of A&R is necessarily antithetical to what makes Gucci great, it just has been historically bc they didn't really get what he was doing

it is well engineered but i think we're looking from more of a songcraft perspective

this album is just verses he wrote in prison rapped over random instrumentals, right? surely that has more to do with the product than the time it actually took to record

Yeah, man. I'm thrilled about his reinvention. Could not have predicted it. And the new songs keep getting better - as in he's sounding more and more at home on them? I'm not expecting a classic but Woptober should be good.

I think a lot of the recent tracks have been only OK, but even on the mediocre he sounds really engaged again. It's really great to hear

It is. And whoile I do see deej's point I'll still go with reinvention. The Gucci who came out of jail is a lot more digestible than the guy who went in was. He sounds and acts as if he got a second shot at life.

His hooks are still lacking a bit on Woptober but his rapping is great, present and symbiotic with the beats, plus his lyrics are better than they've been in a good while afaict.

Also, Out The Zoo might well be my favorite rap song this year.

You COULD argue that this says something about the rest of 2016 rap (and you'd be right), but it also sounds like a top shelf Gucci song, so...

I'd say it's a mix of stiffer rap style and boilerplate lyrics and just a general sensation that he's not really pushing himself

= the wrong people like him now. I get that you prefer the 07-09 run, I do too. But the boilerplate lyrics accusation has been around forever, and given that he has been out for just a few months and have dropped two albums in that time, and that he sounds a lot more at home and confident and is clearly trying (and generally succeeding at) saying something about who and where he is now, speaking about his addiction and so on, I'd say he may well be pushing himself. Maybe he'll slip back into some kind of lazy default mode shortly but at the moment he's definitely trying to redefine himself. You don't have to like the direction he's going in though.

I agree with deej, this stuff is average as fuck, it isn't even close to his best 2011 or 2012 tracks.

i've quite liked some of his guest verses this year -- black beatles and vibin in this bih come to mind immediately -- but i agree with deej that his solo tracks have been pretty stiff

"The wrong people like him" is a reliable sign sure I like to think of them as negative indicators

I can't even argue with that, lol. I still enjoy this album though.

I think his verses are as good as they've been in years; it's the hooks that seem a little tired to me. Small quibble though. I'm just enjoying hearing him enjoy rapping again.

I like his bit in "Black Beatles."

Anyway, falling out of love with someone is never pretty but it can't be helped I guess. Woptober is still one of my favorite albums this year and Everybody's Looking has its gems too.

i wouldn't go as far as 'favorite albums this year' but i gave woptober a good listen & its def an improvement over everybody's looking
