like i don't think the process of A&R is necessarily antithetical to what makes Gucci great, it just has been historically bc they didn't really get what he was doing

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 16 August 2016 23:54 (nine years ago)

Is this not a minutely crafted album?

No snark, just curious.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 16 August 2016 23:56 (nine years ago)

he recorded it in six days

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 16 August 2016 23:59 (nine years ago)

otm this whole thing is just ok.

Spottie, Wednesday, 17 August 2016 00:02 (nine years ago)

I'm not defending this album as a masterpiece, but the mix and arrangements sound polished to my ears idk

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 17 August 2016 00:03 (nine years ago)

sounds better than your run of the mill mixtape thats true

Spottie, Wednesday, 17 August 2016 00:05 (nine years ago)

it is well engineered but i think we're looking from more of a songcraft perspective

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Wednesday, 17 August 2016 00:14 (nine years ago)

ya the engineering is great but itd be cool if the songs were a lil more rigorous to match

lag∞n, Thursday, 18 August 2016 16:32 (nine years ago)

mike will/zaytoven et al seems like spent more time on it than gucci did

lag∞n, Thursday, 18 August 2016 16:33 (nine years ago)

Of course including some of gucci's own tapes. That wasn't the question tho it was over whether or not this album sounds "minutely crafted" lol

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Wednesday, 24 August 2016 00:51 (nine years ago)

"first day out" gives me chills tbh

esempiu (crüt), Wednesday, 24 August 2016 00:52 (nine years ago)

this album is just verses he wrote in prison rapped over random instrumentals, right? surely that has more to do with the product than the time it actually took to record

Jacques_Lamure, Wednesday, 24 August 2016 01:57 (nine years ago)

one month passes...

Sigh. I'm just worried about him. I've been rooting for dude for so long now but I can't see how he's ever coming back from this.

Yeah, man. I'm thrilled about his reinvention. Could not have predicted it. And the new songs keep getting better - as in he's sounding more and more at home on them? I'm not expecting a classic but Woptober should be good.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Thursday, 13 October 2016 10:09 (nine years ago)

I think a lot of the recent tracks have been only OK, but even on the mediocre he sounds really engaged again. It's really great to hear

This is very fun:

gucci biting my high school look

lag∞n, Thursday, 13 October 2016 16:23 (nine years ago)

i don't think gucci had a "reinvention" so much as a combined prison time-out & a reappraisal

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 13 October 2016 21:51 (nine years ago)

Woptober is really good

Evan R, Friday, 14 October 2016 18:04 (nine years ago)

It is. And whoile I do see deej's point I'll still go with reinvention. The Gucci who came out of jail is a lot more digestible than the guy who went in was. He sounds and acts as if he got a second shot at life.

Hey, it's Goji Mane!

omg gucci tiny desk concert gtfooh

yolo mostly (sleepingbag), Saturday, 15 October 2016 03:47 (nine years ago)

His hooks are still lacking a bit on Woptober but his rapping is great, present and symbiotic with the beats, plus his lyrics are better than they've been in a good while afaict.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Saturday, 15 October 2016 13:36 (nine years ago)

Also, Out The Zoo might well be my favorite rap song this year.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Saturday, 15 October 2016 13:50 (nine years ago)

You COULD argue that this says something about the rest of 2016 rap (and you'd be right), but it also sounds like a top shelf Gucci song, so...

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Saturday, 15 October 2016 14:04 (nine years ago)

this stuff all seems competent but its not really for me any more

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Sunday, 16 October 2016 00:09 (nine years ago)

the "out the zoo" beat is pretty sick but the rapping doesn't do anything for me

J0rdan S., Sunday, 16 October 2016 01:05 (nine years ago)

his stuff all seems competent but its not really for me any more

How come?

Evan R, Sunday, 16 October 2016 02:10 (nine years ago)

other people like him now

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Sunday, 16 October 2016 06:22 (nine years ago)

People have always liked him cornballs in the press are just super late

I'd say it's a mix of stiffer rap style and boilerplate lyrics and just a general sensation that he's not really pushing himself

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Sunday, 16 October 2016 06:36 (nine years ago)

= the wrong people like him now. I get that you prefer the 07-09 run, I do too. But the boilerplate lyrics accusation has been around forever, and given that he has been out for just a few months and have dropped two albums in that time, and that he sounds a lot more at home and confident and is clearly trying (and generally succeeding at) saying something about who and where he is now, speaking about his addiction and so on, I'd say he may well be pushing himself. Maybe he'll slip back into some kind of lazy default mode shortly but at the moment he's definitely trying to redefine himself. You don't have to like the direction he's going in though.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Monday, 17 October 2016 06:44 (nine years ago)

it's not what you say, it's how you say it

I agree with deej, this stuff is average as fuck, it isn't even close to his best 2011 or 2012 tracks.

ANU (sisilafami), Monday, 17 October 2016 11:37 (nine years ago)

But the boilerplate lyrics accusation has been around forever

yeah by people who didn't know what they were talking about lol

J0rdan S., Monday, 17 October 2016 14:24 (nine years ago)

i've quite liked some of his guest verses this year -- black beatles and vibin in this bih come to mind immediately -- but i agree with deej that his solo tracks have been pretty stiff

J0rdan S., Monday, 17 October 2016 14:25 (nine years ago)

"The wrong people like him" is a reliable sign sure I like to think of them as negative indicators

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 17 October 2016 15:56 (nine years ago)

I can't even argue with that, lol. I still enjoy this album though.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Monday, 17 October 2016 16:39 (nine years ago)

I think his verses are as good as they've been in years; it's the hooks that seem a little tired to me. Small quibble though. I'm just enjoying hearing him enjoy rapping again.

Evan R, Monday, 17 October 2016 17:03 (nine years ago)

I like his bit in "Black Beatles."

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 17 October 2016 17:25 (nine years ago)

black beatles, step it up, champions, prolly, guwop home all p.good recent stuff

||||||||, Monday, 17 October 2016 21:51 (nine years ago)

His voice just sounds like a different rapper to me now.

Tim F, Monday, 17 October 2016 22:12 (nine years ago)

That's mostly because he's sober, perhaps?

Anyway, falling out of love with someone is never pretty but it can't be helped I guess. Woptober is still one of my favorite albums this year and Everybody's Looking has its gems too.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Tuesday, 18 October 2016 09:05 (nine years ago)

i wouldn't go as far as 'favorite albums this year' but i gave woptober a good listen & its def an improvement over everybody's looking

three weeks pass...

“Last night, me and Future met up in Atlanta," Gucci Mane told Miss Info. "We ditched our entourages, we didn’t book my usual studio, or his usual studio… It’s like we knew we wanted to fly under the radar. There was like this positive competition in the room. I’d hear him go in on a verse, and I knew I had to step up.”

Explaining his chemistry with Future, Gucci continues, “He would say the same back, and we knocked out 6 songs so crazy that I knew we couldn’t just sit on it. We talked about recording some more, adding more songs. But I didn’t want to over think it or over plan things. Even Future didn’t think we were dropping this tonight. This is the freshest it can get. These joints ain’t even 24 hours old. That’s like bringing you in the studio with us.”

lol same ol gwop
