i dj at a "gastropub" here in FL and play mostly balearic and transition into some disco and italo when the kitchen closes at midnight. i've had strangers come up to me that were into it and they have had all sorts of notions about what kind of music it would be considered, many tend to ask if it's "something from the 70's or 80's." i just tell them it's balearic and they nod appreciatively as if that's sufficient explanation. one guy on vacation from detroit got it and said it was perfect for the venue, so that was nice.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Wednesday, 10 August 2016 14:55 (nine years ago)

there's a pub near me that plays a lot of balearic stuff and hosts some of the smaller djs from the scene but it goes to disco and more uptempo stuff very quickly. i like that music and i guess it's necessary for big pubs late at night, but it is annoying having to kind of imagine being on a beach for most of this music.

it's not like ibiza actually has a scene for this either.

i would totally go to a bar that only played the music itt but it doesn't seem to exist.

xps Tim, Ronan - I can no longer pretend to be able to untie the gordian knot of what is supposed to be cool or un-cool and what is boldly unfashionable re corny retro influences anymore (but i am glad Tim is on the trail, if anyone can figure it out its you, budhttp://www.cnet.com/bundles/cnetcss/images/forum/emoticons/wink.gif)

Speaking of music ITT in spas & bars, caught Hatchback and Seahawks DJing in a meze joint one time. Does it get more ILX Balearic? ;-)

lovely mix from hunee, as usual. kinda belongs here tho it's more just jazz i guess.

anyone know the track at 11 mins 20? really beautiful.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Monday, 22 August 2016 10:43 (nine years ago)

it looks like the whole mix is tracks by Air (70s jazz band, not the henry threadgill one)

brimstead, Monday, 22 August 2016 19:38 (nine years ago)

ah nevermind, the mix was merely inspired by Air's lone album

brimstead, Monday, 22 August 2016 19:43 (nine years ago)

the air tracks sound really nice. it's a brilliant mix, listening to it right now for like third time today.

anyone know this tune? heard it at harvey at the weekend and he always plays it: https://soundcloud.com/ronan-fitzgerald/mystery-harvey-tune

while i'm at it, anyone know the tune in the video that's the second most recent post on his facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/HarveyDJay - that's another one he always plays.

was fortunate enough to get in at the very start on saturday and watch him warming up as the venue filled, it was really cool to watch a dj of his quality mess about playing beatless balearic stuff for 30 mins, then fill the floor and get a full cheer for the first record that had drums in it, a re-edit of james brown's "funky good time".

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Friday, 2 September 2016 13:23 (nine years ago)

Pretty sure it's the Afro mix of Helen's Zanzibar (or an edit of). Balearic classic

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoM4Zszz-5o

groovypanda, Monday, 5 September 2016 08:04 (nine years ago)

yeah that's it - nice one - it's either an edit or just way pitched up.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Monday, 5 September 2016 08:19 (nine years ago)

Thanks cozen for the link to that interview with Shy Layers - just got the LP and it is great, perfect soundtrack to the indian summer. Ordered the Baltic Beat LP by Bartosz Kruczyński from the label (Growing Bin) as well, droney balearic bliss:https://bartoszkruczynski.bandcamp.com/album/baltic-beat

pretty cool place.

the soundsystem is incredible - genuinely gets you thinking of a list of albums or tracks you'd like to hear on it. they played a decent amount of jazz and i can safely say i've never heard a system sound so amazing.

this in particular was like more sensory than music usually is (should stress i had nothing stronger than a few beers)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNsiP8dZYg8

the food is pretty nice - the whole place is kind of geared towards table service and sitting down, there's no dancefloor. like a sort of ex-ravers old folks home. expensive though. it feels a bit grim that wanting to hear good music on a nice soundsystem ends up being tied to a sort of yuppy experience. not that there's a bad attitude there or anything, but like a 2/3 glass of beer is six quid.

overall though the music sounds so incredible that i will definitely be going back, it was a really nice place to sit and chat. aficionado seem to be doing a residency there.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Monday, 31 October 2016 11:38 (nine years ago)

article in the ny times today on spiritland/brilliant corners/lucky cloud: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/31/arts/music/london-listening-clubs-spiritland.html

just spiritland for me from the list of stuff they talk about. i've been to those lucky cloud nights and the music was shit imo - djs not mixing things like kerri chandler or eventually hardfloor, had the feeling of a dj that hadn't played in years and was not mixing due to it being a pain, rather than for eclecticism. my friends like brilliant corners a lot but i find it crowded and mostly unpleasant. the idea of classic album sundays isn't really for me.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Monday, 31 October 2016 11:42 (nine years ago)

not that there's a bad attitude there or anything, but like a 2/3 glass of beer is six quid

Argh seriously? It sounded pretty much perfect up to that point.

Matt DC, Monday, 31 October 2016 11:45 (nine years ago)

Like, how loud is the music? Gearing a place around table service/food/conversation seems to conflict with the idea of the speakers taking central stage, but this might be a failure of my imagination here because most places with both loud music and food tend to be dreadful.

Matt DC, Monday, 31 October 2016 11:50 (nine years ago)

The audience sat in rapt silence for New Order’s 1983 record “Power, Corruption & Lies,” taking in every detail of the sparkling electro-pop riffs, soaring vocals and bouncy polyrhythmic beats.

ah yes, the famously soaring voice of bernard sumner

did you see the fantastic RA article on audiophile café's in tokyo? some of those places look so beautiful:
https://www.residentadvisor.net/features/2724

Rae Kwoniff (NickB), Monday, 31 October 2016 12:48 (nine years ago)

the speakers are so good that you can have a conversation fairly easily even sat close to them, but you don't necessarily need to sit really near them if you don't want to.

i wouldn't go for like a meal out in the same way you go to a restaurant, but i can really easily imagine say going after work or on a sunday, having a few beers and then some food as a follow-up. the food is like good salt beef sandwiches, grilled cheese, with a little bit more imagination than that as well, i was sat at the bar for a bit waiting for my friend and watching the chefs and it all looked really nice, just had a grilled cheese myself later and it was good.

i think like probably wine or cocktails might be the way to go if you're drinking there. it's indeed grim that you can't even get a pint, a light glass in my hand that costs six quid is a recipe for a big bill.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Monday, 31 October 2016 13:13 (nine years ago)

i guess the bottom line is that it is cool that someone has actually opened a new dj-centric venue with a great soundsystem tho. it felt nice and retro to be heading towards a more central part of london to go and hear music.

New Psychemagik comp will cost you £75 on vinyl for the three separate editions but £12 on triple CD for 40 songs and over 3 hours of music is an absolute steal.
