Graffiti Bridge vs Cherry Moon

would anyone seriously vote GB? UTCM is at least funny and competently shot.

Οὖτις, Monday, 8 August 2016 19:08 (nine years ago)

i like gb's music better
plus there's a sequence where prince has "Beat Me" shaved into his chest hair, so there's that

thrusted pelvis-first back (ulysses), Monday, 8 August 2016 19:15 (nine years ago)

you like gb's music better????????????????????

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Monday, 8 August 2016 19:16 (nine years ago)

Yes.

thrusted pelvis-first back (ulysses), Monday, 8 August 2016 19:33 (nine years ago)

saw that 35mm print of 'sign o the times' at alamo a few weeks back, with chaki delivering opening remarks. I still have my old fuzzy VHS tape but hadn't watched that for 20 years or so

it is just beyond belief how great that film is

Milton Parker, Monday, 8 August 2016 20:13 (nine years ago)

I am sorry I missed that!

Οὖτις, Monday, 8 August 2016 20:14 (nine years ago)

SOTT needs a remastered theatrical re-release. Purple Rain gets all the glory but I think sartorial datedness notwithstanding the SOTT film would blow some young minds.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Tuesday, 9 August 2016 13:07 (nine years ago)

Hell - they may even dig the clothes! Was Prince's coolest looking/sounding/band era as it is (IMHO).

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Tuesday, 9 August 2016 13:08 (nine years ago)

Parade doing its thing here. Tracks 1-6 are light-footed magic. Thanks P.

MatthewK, Monday, 15 August 2016 12:50 (nine years ago)

Was listening to Parade yesterday. It is perfection.

Yes it has pickles and chicken...but...it doesn't have mild cheese... (stevie), Monday, 15 August 2016 12:51 (nine years ago)

thanks for coming to that, MP! I had to drive the reels back to QT the next day lol.

http://www.startribune.com/pills-seized-from-paisley-park-contained-illicit-fentanyl-same-drug-that-killed-prince/390816101/

Pills marked as hydrocodone that were seized from Paisley Park after Prince’s overdose death actually contained fentanyl, the powerful opioid that killed him, according to a source with knowledge of the investigation.

The musician, who weighed only 112 pounds at the time of his death April 21, had so much of the drug in his system, autopsy results later showed, that it would have killed anyone, regardless of size, the source said.

Prince did not possess a prescription for fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that has been described as 100 times more powerful than morphine, the source said.

Despite the finding, investigators still aren’t certain how the 57-year-old megastar ingested the fentanyl. However, they are leaning toward the theory that he took the pills not knowing they contained the drug.

oof

Οὖτις, Monday, 22 August 2016 17:00 (nine years ago)

surely something even 10 times stronger than Morphine shouldn't be anything like legal let alone 100 times. Jesus.

piscesx, Monday, 22 August 2016 17:09 (nine years ago)

fuck.

how's life, Monday, 22 August 2016 17:18 (nine years ago)

What the hell with that last paragraph

I wish you could see my home. It's... it's so... exciting (Jon not Jon), Monday, 22 August 2016 17:29 (nine years ago)

Makes it seem like he was taken out.

flappy bird, Monday, 22 August 2016 17:33 (nine years ago)

I wouldn't necessarily say that, but it definitely changes things if true

I wish you could see my home. It's... it's so... exciting (Jon not Jon), Monday, 22 August 2016 17:47 (nine years ago)

a lot of prescription narcotics that are sold illegally aren't what they claim to be, and afaik cutting fentanyl and labeling it as something else isn't uncommon due to its strength

it's responsible for a lot of accidental overdoses, especially among people used to opiates

mh, Monday, 22 August 2016 18:07 (nine years ago)

yeah to me that last sentence just points to black market pills rather than, like, MURDER

Οὖτις, Monday, 22 August 2016 18:53 (nine years ago)

I know of at least two friends-of-friends who have died of fentanyl overdose

mh, Monday, 22 August 2016 19:20 (nine years ago)

well this is all just a touch more fucking awful now

like, as if him dying the day before the intervention wasn't tragic enough

beer say hi to me (stevie), Monday, 22 August 2016 19:24 (nine years ago)

Isn't fentanyl what almost got David Berman?

Iago Galdston, Monday, 22 August 2016 19:29 (nine years ago)

I think that was approaching perfection

Number None, Monday, 22 August 2016 19:36 (nine years ago)

Nice piece on the upcoming Revolution tribute shows:

http://www.startribune.com/prince-amp-the-revolution-survivors-talk-about-first-avenue-grieving-concerts/391346091/

Sad detail:

Wendy & Lisa were asked to perform Prince’s “Sometimes It Snows in April” with soul man D’Angelo on “The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon” a few days after the death. They declined.

“I couldn’t even play my piano for a month or more,” Coleman said.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 1 September 2016 16:54 (nine years ago)

Purple Rain is $1 on Google Play Music today in case for us non-Tidal users missing Prince

So I've been rehearsing for a Prince tribute concert here...the bandleader is going all in w/horns, strings, dancers, studying all the old bootlegs etc. It's a lot for one show but you can't half-ass Prince, I guess. So to speak.

okay, have we grieved enough yet for me to ask when the first posthumous release is coming? I know there are a zillion reasons why not but does anyone have an article about it yet? Or a learned update?

So, uhhmm. . .

http://www.rrauction.com/bidtracker_detail.cfm?IN=589

The Camille album apparently exists.

Austin, Saturday, 10 September 2016 06:03 (nine years ago)

Wonder if all the versions on there are unique.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 10 September 2016 16:16 (nine years ago)

that label makes me feel weird

thrusted pelvis-first back (ulysses), Saturday, 10 September 2016 17:15 (nine years ago)

Idk if the version of Camille I have is the same mixes as on that 'genuine' article but it plays really well as an album

I wish you could see my home. It's... it's so... exciting (Jon not Jon), Saturday, 10 September 2016 17:23 (nine years ago)

Pretty sure that's a bootleg. Camille album was never pressed up. The Black Album was but then all pressed copies were supposedly destroyed after P changed his mind about releasing it.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Saturday, 10 September 2016 18:30 (nine years ago)

nah I used to own an Italian pressing of the Black Album, it went to press over there and a number of them hit the market - I bought it in iirc either December or '87 or January '88. expensive as hell at the time

though she denies it to the press, (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Saturday, 10 September 2016 18:45 (nine years ago)

In April 2016, an original promo copy from 1987 was sold on Discogs' marketplace for a record $15,000.00 US.

:( I sold it at some point I'm pretty sure

6 of the 8 tunes on that Camille album turned up on official Prince records anyway: "Housequake", "Strange Relationship", and "If I Was..." on SOTT, "Rockhard" on the Black Album, and "Shockadelica" and "Feel U Up" as B-sides. It would've been dope to have them on a proper Camille album though, as they're all among Prince's best tunes in this era.

Tuomas, Monday, 12 September 2016 07:39 (nine years ago)

There were other tunes from the late 80s that also used the Camille gimmick and would've fit that album: "Scarlet Pussy", "Partyman", etc. And the ur example of that style is of course "Erotic City". For some reason the chipmunk voice seems to have brought out the most funky side of late 80s Prince. Too bad he gave that up when he tried to form a tougher image with the New Power Generation. (Though arguably "Prettyman" from Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic is a continuation of that style, even though his voice is less chipmunky on it.)

Tuomas, Monday, 12 September 2016 07:47 (nine years ago)

And "Cloreen Baconskin" of course. And maybe at a stretch "Bob George".
I still remember the total WTF of the first Camille track I heard on SOTT.
